Sport Pedagogy Lesson Plan

Lesson Focus: Basketball lay ups

# of students: 20 students

Equipment and Facilities: 10 basketballs, 20 jerseys,


20 poly spots, 5 basketball hoops, star poly spots

Safety Considerations: Students will be advised to


keep their heads up and be aware of their
surroundings when in limited space. Students will be
told to not throw the equipment in an inappropriate
manner or shoot a ball when it is not their turn. The
teacher will make sure that there is adequate personal
space for each student during the activities.

Lesson Specifics

Instant Activity: Hourglass Relay


Students will be divided between the
4 corners of the basketball court.
1st person in the bottom right
dribbles to the top left. Top Left
dribbles to the bottom left. Bottom
left dribbles to the top right. Top
right runs to the bottom right
corner. Students will be
continuously moving. This is not a
race. It is to practice dribbling with
speed. Will most likely start by
running the relay and giving high
fives to students then advance the
quick instant activity with a ball.
Set Induction:
Today we are going to have a lot of
practicing a skill that you all love to
do. Today we are going to practice
shooting a basketball AND learn
how to make a lay up.
To set up the correct positioning.
Make sure: 1 hand is placed under
the ball (dominant hand), the other
hand is on the side to guide the ball,
Bend knees to use your legs, and
cookie jar to extend and reach up
and over the basket sticking that
hand into the cookie jar

In a lay up. The same arm and knee


should go together when making a
lay up. If shooting on the right side,
jump off the left side. If shooting
from the left side, left arm and left
knee up.
Purpose:
Knowing how to correctly shoot will
help you score which in turn will
help you team win. Easy way to
score points
Transition (if necessary): Students
will stay at home base for
instructions until further
instructions
Lesson Core - Task 1:
Split into small groups of 5 on each
hoop. Each group will be given 2
basketballs to share amongst their
group members at the hoop
They are able to practice shooting
at their hoop at any area. The poly
spots are on the court for guidance.
I will go around each group and
give personal feedback.
