Abstract

Tocompletetheassignment,thesamefourstepsweretakenforeachofthefour
teamsportsinordertogetthemostdetailedanalysisofeachsport.Thesefoursteps
werethehistoryofthesport,tacticalplaysforeachsport,strengthandweakness
analysisforeachplayerontheteam,andthe12basicrulestoplayeachsport.The
12rulesarepresentedthroughavideo,whiletheotherthreesectionsareexplained
indetailinthedocument.
Eachsportwasanalysedseparatelyandindetail.Foreachsportthestrengthsand
weaknessesofeverymemberofourteamwasanalysed,andtacticalplayswere
createdusingthisinformationinordertomaximisetheteam'spotential.Both
offensiveanddefensivetacticshadtobeaddressed.Forfootball,thetacticswere
basedaroundavarietyofsituations,includingcornerkicks,freekicks,andopen
play.Thiswasdoneinordertopreparetheteamforanysituation,andsohopefully
increasethechancesofourteamtowin.Forrugby,thetacticsarebasedaround
usingthespeedintheteamtoquicklyattacktheopponentteam.Thisisdoneby
settingupplaysthatrequirequickmovementoftheballandtheplayersaroundthe
ball.Defenceisalsosetupwiththeobjectivetoquicklygettheballbackupthefield
towardstheopponenttryzone.Forbasketball,thetacticalfocuswasoncreatinga
solidanddisciplineddefensiveformation,andcatchtheopponentteamonquick
counterattacks.Thiswasdonetoagaintakeadvantageofthespeedintheteambut
withoutcompromisingthedefensivesideofthegame.Forcricket,thebattingtactics
weresetuptotakeadvantageofthedifferentheightofthepeopleintheteam.The
battersareorganisedinlevelofskillinanalternatingformationinordertokeepthe
battingunpredictable.Thefieldingsideissetupaccordingtotheoppositebatsman.
Therearedifferentpositionstakenbyfieldersaccordingtowhetherthebatsmanisa
bighitterorasmallhitter.
Theseplayswerenotonlysetuptoguidetheplayerswithintheteambuttoimprove
theteamasawhole,anditappearssuccessfullyastheteamhasprogressedrapidly
inasmalltime.

Introduction

Thepastweekswehavebeencollectingdatafromeachothertocomeupwitha
playbook.Inthisplaybookwetalkspecificallyaboutthefourmostpopularsportsin
theworld:football,basketball,cricketand(touch)rugby.Weusedthesesports
becausetheyareversatile.Forinstance,basketballisaveryhighactivesportand
cricketisalowactivesport.Thisplaybookisspecificallydesignedtoimprovegroup
fivescapabilitiesintheteamsports.

Wecollectedthisdataduringandoutsideofclasses.Collectingthisdatagaveusa
goodviewofthestrengthsandweaknessesofeveryindividualteammember.To
createthemosteffectivetacticalplaysyoufirsthavetopositioneveryoneinthe
correctplace.Bylookingatindividualstrengthsandweaknesseswecanfindout
whichpositionsuitsbestforeachteammember.Afterpositioningourteammembers
onthefielditwasnecessarytoidentifythebestwaytouseourstrengthswithin
specificplays.Organisingplayersontherightspothasproventobeourteamsroad
tosuccess.IntheendweusedHofstedessixdimensionsmodeltoexplainwhya
personwouldbegoodatcertainassetsofasport.

Workingasateamonthisprojectisveryimportantbutdoingeverythingtogetheris
impossible.Thatiswhywedividedallthework.Everypartwasdonewithoneperson
inchargeandoneassistant.Whenthesetwopeoplecouldnotfindasolutionorhad
difficultiesduringtheproject,theycouldalwayssteptotheotherteammembers.As
anextracontroltactic,everyteammemberhadtoreadeverypartoftheplaybook.
Thiswasnotonlytocheckourownworkbutalsotomakesureeveryoneknowswhat
hisorherroleisduringacertaintacticalplay.

Football

Footballisarecreationalgameplayedwidelyaroundtheworld.Tofindoutwhere
footballisoriginatedfrom,wehavetolookfarintothepast.Thewordfootballwas
earliestfoundinlegalrecordsandcourtcasesinthethirteenthcentury.Britain
claimedthatthesocalledgameoffootballwasfirstrecordedintheircountryinthe
ninthcentury.Evenbeforethisclaimwasmade,recordshavebeenfoundofasimilar
gameinChina.TheChinesewriterLiYu(ad50130)describedagamebeingplayed
whichwasverysimilartofootballasweknowitinpresenttime(Walvin,2000).

Wherethegamefootballreallyoriginatesfromisoneofthemysteriesinourhistory.
Becausesimilargameshavebeenfoundinvariousplacesaroundtheworlditishard
tosaywhereitallstarted.Ofcoursemanycountrieswillclaimitisoriginallytheirsbut
noonecangivefullproof.

StrengthsandWeaknesses

Beforewecanmaketacticalplayswehavetofindoutwhereeveryteammemberwill
bepositionedinthefield.Wecanfindthisoutbylookingateachplayersstrengths
andweaknessesandthenputtheminthepositionthatwouldfiteachteammember.
Wequicklyfoundasoliddefenceoftwoplayerswiththeperfectabilitytostealthe
ballofanyattackingplayer.Imanwillsetoutthedefensivelineswithhisknowledge
offootballandsolidpositioning.Healsohasthetimetocoachfromthebackandset
outthelines.Hislongpasseswillbeveryusefultoactivateourfastwingsandthan
doaquickcounterattack.ImanisaccompaniedbyKoen.Withtheuseofhis
physicalityitwillbedifficultforattackerstopasshim.WheneverKoenorImanmake
aninterception,they,duetoourcommunalteampositioning,willknowexactlywhere
eachplayerstands,andwhethertheyshouldpasstheball,orkickitoutofbounds.

Themainstrengthofourteamisaroundmidfield.Thisisbecausewehavethree
midfielders.Wethinkwewillbeabletomakethebestuseoftheentirefieldthisway.
Ourmaingoalwillbetoplaycontrolledfootballandnottorushforagoal.TjerkJan
willplayinthemiddlebecausehisballcontrolandpassingisperfectforquickand
shortplaysthroughthemidfield.Incombinationwithagoodshotformthesecond
line,hewillbeachallengingrivalfortheopponentteam.Gregorysskillsarespeed,
powerandballcontroltopassaplayerorevendefendanupcomingattacker.Thatis
whywedecidedtopositionhimontheleftwing.Withhisabilitytorundownthe
wholesideline,hewillplayanimportantpartindefensiveandoffensiveplays.On
theothersideofthemidfieldMargotusesherenergytorunupanddowntheright
sideofthefield,andintercepttheballfromtheadversary.Withherprettyalrightball
controlshecanreceivelongpasses,controltheballquicklyandthenpassitonor
scoreherself.Herpassingabilitymakeshertoachallengingplayerfortheopponent
teamasshecansetourattackingplayersinscoringposition.

InourattackingpositionwehaveSvea,sheisthemotivatorofourteam.Withher
teamspiritandherpositiveattitudetowardsthegameshereallyliftsupthespiritsof
thewholeteam.Althoughsheisstillatthebeginningofimprovingherskillsher
determinationtosucceedinthesportisincredible.

Tacticalplays

Inthefirstattackingplay,thetwodefenderspushuptothehalfwaylineinorderto
compressspace.Thiswillallowtheattackingteamtoquicklypressurethedefending
teamiftheballislost.Onemidfieldertakesupacentralpositionwhiletheother
pushestotheleftwing.Theballisplayedfromtherightsidedcentraldefenderinto
thecentralmidfielder.Thisisdoneinordertoattractoppositeplayerstohim,leaving

spaceforthemidfielderonthewingtoexploit.Thentheballisplayedbacktotheleft
sideddefender,whoquicklyplaystheballouttothemidfielderonthewing.This
playerthendribblestheballtopointA.Fromhere,acrossismadetowardsthe
striker,whohastakenapositionnearthegoal.Itisthestrikersresponsibilitytoturn
theballtowardsthegoal.Atthispoint,thecentralmidfieldertakesapositionbehind
thestrikerinordertopickupanyclearancesoralooseball.

Thisplaywasmadeinordertotakeadvantageofacornerkicksituation.Thereare
twoplayerswhotakeupapositionnearthegoal.Oneoftheplayersmakesarunto
thefrontpostwhilethesecondplayermakesaruntothefarpost.Asthereareno
goalkeepersinfiveaside,theballisaimedtobeplayedasclosetothegoalas
possiblealongthefloor.Thetwoattackers'aimistogettotheballbeforeadefender
doesandturnittowardsgoal.Athirdandfourthplayerarepositioningthemselvesa
bitfurtherawayfromthegoal,butinthecentreofthefield.Theirjobistorecovera
ballthatiscleared,tostarttheattackagainortohaveashotonthegoal.Oneplayer
staysbehindindefense.Thisplayersjobistopreventafastcounterattackbythe
opponentteam,iftheballislost,mainlybyholdinguptheattackingplayerwhilethe
otherplayersgetbacktotheirdefensivepositions.

Thisisthebasicdefensiveshapetheteamwilltrytostickto.Thetwodefenderssplit
tocoverthewings,whileoneofthemidfieldersfillsthespaceinbetweeninorderto
makeathreemandefense.Thestrikercomesbacktofillthespaceleftbythe
midfielder,inordertomakeagainatwomanmidfield.Thejobofthetwomidfielders
istoclosedowntheballandputtheopponentteamunderpressure.Thejobofthe
threedefendersistocreateawall,andpreventanyballsbeingplayedinbehind.
Theymustalsocoverthemidfieldersbypickingupanyballplayedbehindthem.The
teammustbecompact.Iftheballgoestotheleftwing,allfiveplayersshouldmove
asaunittotheright,keepingtheirshape.Thispreventsspacesfrombeingopened
fortheopponentteamtouse.

Thisdefensiveplayissetuptodefendagainstafreekicksituation.Threedefenders
takeupapositionnearthegoalinaline.Theirjobistoclearanycrossesorshots
thatcometowardsthegoal.Theothertwodefendersmakeawall.Whentheballhas
beenplayed,oneoftheplayersinthewalltakesapositioninthecenterofhis/her
ownhalf.Thisplayer'sjobistopickupanyclearances,inordertoregainpossession

forhisteam.Theotherplayerrunsintoanattackingposition.Thisplayerisusedas
anoutlet.Whentheballiswonback,theaimistoplaytheballtothisplayer,whois
responsibletoholdtheballwhiletheotherplayerscomeforwardtoprovidesupport.

2.0

Basketball

Basketballisoneofthemostpopularsportsintheworld.Itisplayedbytwoteams
playingagainsteachother.Basketballisplayedonarectangularformedfield(also
calledBasketballCourt)withbasketspositionedhighoneachendofthefield.The
purposeofthegameistoscorepointsbythrowingtheballintothebasket.Theteam
withthemostpointsattheendofthegamewins.

BasketballfirstoriginatedinSpringfield,MassachusettsintheUnitedStatesof
America.Duringthewinterof1891asportsinstructoroftheinternationalYMCA
TrainingSchoolnamedJamesNaismithwasencouragedtocreateanindoorteam
sportwhichwaseasytoplayandanopportunitytokeephisstudentsbusyduringthe
winterperiod(Laughead,G.,2014).Withthecombinationofvarioussportssuchas
rugby,lacrosseandfootballheinventedthegameofBasketball.

Thegamewasfirstplayedwithafootballandtwowoodenpeachbaskets.Later,iron
hoopswereintroducedtoBasketballtoreplacethepeachbaskets.Thegamewas
constantlyupgraded.Tenyearslateropenendednetswereintroduced.Thesenets
arestillusedtoday.Thenextessentialupgradewastheactualbasketballduringthe
late1940s(McCuaig,D.S.,2013).Theballwasnowmouldedtogetherratherthan
stitchedandthecolourchangedfromdarkbrowntoanorangebrownishtone.

Thegamewasgrowingrapidlyanditdidnottakelongtimeuntilitspreadaroundthe
world.TheinternationalstudentsthatstudiedattheYMCATrainingSchoolcontinued
playingthegameintheirhomecountries.Basketballmadeitsfirstinternational
appearanceinthe1936OlympicsinBerlinandissincethenpartofit(McCuaig,D.
S.,2013).

Todaybasketballisoneofthemostviewedandparticipatedsportsworldwide.The
sportisplayednotonlyatahighperformancelevelbutalsoatarecreationallevel.
Basketballisasportforeveryoneregardlessofageorgender.Itcanbeplayedat
universities,schoolsorlocalsportclubs.

2.2 StrengthsandWeaknesses

Ourteamisbuiltupofsixathleticindividuals.Allsixmembersdonotpracticed
basketballbeforeandportrayavagueunderstandingofthegameprinciples.Since
thetimeisnarrowtoworkonthewholetechnicalaspectsofthegame,itisessential
torelyoneachindividual'sstrengthsandweaknesses.Eachmemberofourteam
hasadvantagesanddisadvantages.Thatcandeterminewhichpositionsuits
somebodythebesttosupporttheteamsinterestinwinningthebasketball
tournament.

TjerkJan
TjerkJanisaverymobileplayer,heisgiftedwithgoodhandeyecoordinationand
goodballhandlingskillstomakeagoodpassattherighttimefortheassist.Healso
hastheabilitytodrivetothehoopandscoreeasylayupsortwopointjumpers(field
goalshots).TjerkJan'sunsatisfactoryconditioncanbeanissueinafasttransition
game(offensivetodefensive).Therefore,duetohisattributeshewillintheposition
oftheplaypointguard(positionone).Hispurposeistoinitiatethetacticalplays
throughgoodballmovementandleadership.

Gregory
Alsoaverymobileandfastplayer.Hehasremarkabledribblingskillsthatcanhelpin
oneversusonesituationsagainsttheopponentteam.Hisathleticabilitytodriveand
leaptowardsthehoopwithspeedandgoupforthelayupisbeneficialfortheteam.
Perimetershots(threepointshots)aredecent.Hisdefensiveplayisonlyvery
effectiveonshorteropponentsandisproblematicontalleropponents.Gregory's
positionwillbeatshootingguard(positiontwo).Hispurposeistosetthetempoof
thegameandgoforopenshotsifhehasthechance.Positiononeandtwoarethe
onlypositionsthatcanswitchandalternateinourteam.

Iman
Imanisthetallestplayerintheteam.Hisheightisessentialasbasketballbenefits
fromtallpeople.Hecanleapforaballthathasbeenpassedtohighandrebound
(recovertheballafteritisthrown)theballtokeeppossession.Hislackofawareness
doesnotmakehimtoafastreactingplayerinoffensiveanddefensivetransitions.His
positioniscentre(positionthree)ashisheightisimportantclosetothehoopon
offenceanddefence.

Shehasamotivatedandaggressivespirit.Aperfectplayerformanonmandefence.
Heroffballmovementisbeneficialforouroffensivescreenplays(pick).Her
physicalityhelpshertosetthemupefficiently.Herballhandlingskillsarenotatthe

SimilarattributesasSvea.Heisafastandpowerfulplayer.Goodballhandlingskills
andgooddrivetothehoop.Hisphysiqueandoffballmovementarebeneficialfor
screenplaysintheoffence.Inadditiontohisphysicality,hismobilitywillincreasethe
efficiencyinoffensiveanddefensiveplays.Koenwillrotatebetweentwopositions
becausehehastheabilitytoplayboth.Hispositionwillbesetaspowerforward
(positionthree)andsmallforward(positionfour).

Margot
Margothasoverallgoodattributes.Sheisgoodatballdribbling,creatingscoring
chancesandshehasagoodoffballmovement.Sheismotivatedbutlacksfocus
withinagame.Neverthelesssheisthesecretweapontoscoringpointsclosetothe
hoop.Therefore,Margot'spositionwillbeclosetothebasketasasmallforward
(positionfive).

Allplayersareimportanttotheteam'ssuccessifeveryonestickstotheirpositions
androles.Thepositionsreflectoneachindividual'sattributesthusbeingtheoptimal
setforourteam.

Thepurposeofthefastbreakistocreateacounterattackaftertheballisretrieved.
Thegoalistoscorepointsasquickaspossiblebeforetheopponentteamhasthe
chancetoestablishtheirdefensiveformation.AftertheballisretrievedImanpasses
theballtoTjerkJan.GregoryandKoenmoveupthefieldwithtempotosetup
passingoptionsforTjerkJan.Hethenpassestheballtooneofthetwoplayerswho
movedupfield.Whoeverreceivestheballcandecidewhetherhegoesforthescore
byhimselforpassestheballfortheassist.Thisoffensiveplayisaneffectivewayto
scorequickandeasypointsifeveryonereactsontime.

becausewehavegreatcommunicationskillsandknoweachotherwellenoughtoget
thetimingright.

Atthezonedefenceeveryteamplayercoversaspecialareainthefield.Wechosea
zonedefencebecauseitfitstheskillsandweaknessesofourteamplayers.Asthis
techniquerequiresgoodpassingskillsourteamcanbenefitfromitwithGregoryand
TjerkJan.ThisplaystrategyworkswithquickplayerslikeMargot,aswellaswith
slowplayerslikeSvea.(Zonedefense,n.d.)Ourpositionwillbethetwothreezone
defence.Itisoneofthemostcommonzonedefencemethods.Playersoneandtwo
willbeTjerkJanbecauseofhisshootingskillsandKoenbecauseofhisgoodball
movementandhisquickness.Theywillbetheguardsofthegame.Fourandfive
willbeMargotandGregory.Theywillbetheforwards.Imanwillbenumberthree
becauseofhisheightandthepossibilitytopreventplayersfromtheopponentteam
toscore.Hewillbeinthecentre(Mac,C.,2015).

Thereareplentyofadvantagesofmantomandefenceforourteam.Atthe
Basketballtournamentalotofstudentswithdifferentskills,sizeandquicknessplay
againsteachother.Withthemantomandefenceitispossibletoleteveryteam
playerdefendanequalstrongplayeroftheopponentteam.Wehaveplayerslike
Gregory,whoalreadyplayedbasketball.Theycandefendamoreexperiencedplayer
fromtheopponentteam.Sveaneverplayedbasketballbefore.Shecandefenda
lessexperiencedplayerfromtheopponentteam.Imanwithhisheightshoulddefend
aplayerwhoistallaswell.Margotshoulddefendaplayerwhoisthesamefastas
her.Oneotherbenefitisthatwecommunicateverywellduringgames.Withthisskill
wecanalsoswitchtheplayerswearedefendingduringthewholegame.Withthat
westayflexibleandhavemorechancestooverthinkformerdecisions.(Ojeda,V.,
2009)

3.0Cricket
Cricketisapopularsportinmanypartsoftheglobe.Itinvolvestwoteamsof11
playerseach.Oneteamisthebattingteam,whiletheotherteamisthefieldingteam.
Themainobjectiveofthebattingteamistohittheballandscoreruns,whilethemain
objectiveofthefieldingteamistotryandgetthebattersoutandtopreventthem
fromscoringruns.Thereareanyvariationsofthegame,the"2020",the"OneDay
International"andthe"TestMatch".Thewinnerofamatchistheteamthathasthe
mostrunsattheendofalloversorwhenallthebatsmenareout.
ThesportpreviouslyhasmainlybeenpopularincountriesintheBritishEmpire,such
asIndia,AustraliaandSouthAfrica.Thisisbecauseitiswidelyacceptedthatcricket
originatedfromEngland,andthereforespreadalongwiththeBritishimperialist
expansion.However,inrecenttimesthesporthasgainedpopularityinmanyother
partsoftheglobe,withcountriessuchastheNetherlands,ScotlandandHongKong.
However,thecountrieswithanextensivehistoryincricketstilldominatethegame,
withthetopthreeintheworldconsistingofSouthAfrica,AustraliaandEngland("
ICC
rankings,"n.d)
Althoughtheoriginsofthegameareuncertain,thefirstevidenceofasportsimilarto
cricketbeingplayedwasaround1550,inGuildford,SurreyinEngland("Abrief,"n.d).
Althoughthismightnothavebeenexactlythesameasthesporttoday,itwasthe
formationofthebasicideaofthegameandcreatedafoundationforthesporttobe
developed.Overtheyears,thesportundertookmanychangesinbothrulesand
regulationsaswellasintheequipment.Forexample,thefirstestablishedrulesof
cricketweremadein1744,buthavebeenrevisedsincethen("Isthis,"n.d
).
TheInternationalCricketCouncil(ICC)wassetuponJune15,1909

n.d)Thiswasabigstepforthesportasitgaveitaninternationalgoverningbody
whichcouldenforcerulesandorganisehighlevelcompetition.Italsocreateda
standardisedsetofrulesforallinternationalassociationstofollow,whichmadethe
gamemoreunifiedglobally.

bowler/wicketkeeper.Theonlystruggleforhimispositioning,butwiththe
coordinationofKoenitwillnotbeabigissue.
SveaandMargothavealmostthesameskilllevel.Theycancatchandthrowtheball
wellinashortdistancearoundthewicket.Theydominatethegameas
wicketkeepers.Theyaregoingtoclosethegapsatasmallrangearoundthewicket

Thegameofrugbyisasportthatstartedintheearly1800sinEngland.Thesportis
namedafterthetownandtheschoolitwascreatedin.AmannamedWilliamWebb
ElliswhowenttoRugbyschoolinatowncalledRugbydecidedtooverrulethe
principlesoffootballandpickuptheballinhishandsandrunwithit.Thatishowthe
gameisclaimedtohavebeencreated.Althoughthisdescriptionseemsvagueto
believe,ithasbeenacceptedasatrueclaim.Asthegameevolveditbecamemore
popularallovertheworld.Rugbyhasgrowntobeoneofthemostpopularsportof

Rugbyisaveryphysicalsportandisnotsuitableforeveryonewhoisinterestedin

defensivelineandchaseaftertheiropponent.Theirpoorawarenesswhenin
possessionoftheballcanleadtoquickturnoversifpassedwithoutthought.
However,theyareabletocorrecttheirmistakesandadapttothesituation.The
positionstheywillplayinareonthelinks.Withtheirstrengthstheydisplayagreat
bondbetweenthecentreandthewingpositions.

ImanandKoen
Theyarethefastonesinourteam.Theirmainroleistodominatetheopponentteam
withspeed.Ourteamwillhavetheadvantagesincethesportismainlybasedon
speedandreactiontime.Theysettheedgewhenitcomestoscoringtries.The
positiontheywillplayisthepositionofthewing.ImanandKoenwillmovealongthe
wingsofthepitchandalsoswitchsideswithinanoffensiveplay.Withthem,all
diversionswillbedonewithpace.Theironlynegativeattributeisthattheirspeedis
notinrhythmwiththeirpassinggame.Anuncontrolledpasscanleadtoaturnover
throughaninterceptionoradroppedball.Thatiswhytheywillbemoreresponsible
forscoringratherthangivingtheassisttoscore.
Ourwholegroupisnotfamiliarwiththesportofrugbybutthroughtheanalysisofour
teamwecantellthateachandeveryonehasitstraitsthatcanhelpsucceedinthe
game.Anotherstrengthisthecommunicationskillsonandoffthepitch.Thiscan
leadtoawellstructuredgameindifferentsituations.

Workingtogetherisnotaneasytask.Wewereassignedinrandomgroupstowork
togetherinsportsclassesandonmultipleassignments.PPD5isagroupofsixvery
differenthumanbeings.Notonlyiseveryoneshomecultureverydifferentfromeach
otherbuteveryoneofushastravelledandexperiencedlifeindifferentculturesthan
theirhomeones,andhasthereforechangedasanindividual.Everyindividualhas
differentideasandunderstandings.Basedonwhoweareandwherewegrewup,we
interpretthetasksassignedtousasagroupinadifferentway.Sometimeswe
collide,explodeorfail.ButasourFacebookgroupnamerevealsthemaingoalof
thegroupistoworktogetherinharmonyandbalance.FollowingHofstedesmodelof
culturaldiversity,weassessedeachmemberbasedonwheretheycomefrom,where
theygrewup,andhowtheyareasanindividual.
Hofstedesmodelincludespowerdistance,Masculinityversusfemininity,indulgence
versusrestraint,individualismversuscollectivism,andhighorlowuncertainty
avoidance.

5.1Masculinityandfemininity
GregoryBetamagrewupinGermanyandlived4yearsinAmerica.Botharevery
masculineorientedcountries.AustriawhereSveaGanstercomesfromisalsoa
masculinecountry.TheNetherlands,whereKoenBlomandTjerkJanVanDoeselaar
grewup,scoremediumonthemasculinityscale.
BelgiumwhereMargotDeprez

originatesfromalsoscoresamedium.ImanJafriisfromthemorefeminineoriented
FinlandandhalfPakistani.However,ImanlivedinAbuDhabi,Margothaslivedin
KigaliaswellasinKinshasa.SveatravelledEuropeandTjerkJanAsia,Koencomes
fromafamilyofhighperformanceathletes,andlivedsevenyearsinChicago.
Assessingeachmemberontheiractionsandmentalityinthegroup,wecometo
differentresults.Imanscoresmoreonthefeminineside.Heislesspressuredwith
gettingtheworkdone,andalsowanttoenjoy.TjerkJan,MargotandSveascorea
mediumtheyaremoretaskoriented,butnottoopressured.Koen,playinghighlevel
baseball,andGregory,fromGermanyarethemoremasculinemembers,theywant
toperformwellthemost,buttheywillalsohavethemoststress.Overall,noonein
ourgroupisatanextremeendofthescale(Nunez,NunezMahdi&Popma,2008).

5.2Indulgence,restraintanduncertaintyavoidance
PPD5haslunchmeetingstogetherinTimeOut.Wehavealaidbackatmosphere
goingonthere,althoughwecancriticiseeachotherquitebluntly.Wewillwatchour
cricketvideoforteamsportsandhaveagoodlaugh,whileworkingonour

presentationforfitnesstomusic.PPD5,harmonyandbalance,didspendthree
straighthoursworkingontheirchoreographytheotherday,andweonlysucceeded
indoingsobecausethementalityofthegroupwastoprogresspositively.Wetook
onewelldeservedwaterbreak,andtheboysandMargotplayedfiveminutesof
soccerbeforepushingourselvesforthelastthirtyminutes.Ingeneral,becauseof
morerestraintmemberssuchasTjerkJanandKoen,wegotourthingsdonequite
earlysowewouldstillhavetimetolookoverassignments.However,therearealso
moreindulgentmemberswhoscoreloweronuncertaintyavoidance.Margotfailedto
comeupwithstepsforfitnesstomusicasshecouldnotforceacreativeprocess.
ThatstressedSvea,whoscoreshigheronuncertaintyavoidancetogetherwith
TjerkJan,GregandKoen.Imanneededwaylongertoproducesomething,when
TjerkJanexpectedhimtohaveitfinishedinafewdays,ashedidnotfeelthesame
pressure.Ingeneral,morerestraintmemberswouldexpecttheotherstobeableto
makeassignmentsontime,whichconfusedthemoreindulgentmembers,whoalso
seemtobelessuncertaintyavoiding.Themembersarelearninghowtheyhaveto
communicatewitheachother.Themorerestraintmembersneedtoputmoretrustin
themoreindulgentmembersaswellhowever,asagroupmemberwillnotfunction
optimallywithouttheknowledgethatthegroupbelievesinhis/hercapabilities.
Eventuallytheworkwillbedone,andwewillallhavethetimetorelax(Nunez,Nunez
Mahdi&Popma,2008).

5.3Longandshorttermorientation
Allgroupmembershaveamutualgoaltosucceedinallthatwedo.Wewouldalso
liketoperformwellintheteamsportsasinourcareersatschool.
TjerkJan,GregoryandSveaastheoldermembersofthegrouphaveabitmorelife
experienceandhavechosenthiseducationafterhavingbeenintheworkingfield.
Thiswillmeanthattheyhaveputalotofthoughtintothisandthereforearemore
longtermorientated.Theyhaveacleargoalinwhattheywanttodowiththis
educationandinwhatworkfieldtheywanttoendupin.MargotandImanareabit
youngerandtheyhaventgottheexperiencesyetthattheoldermembershave.This
isshowninthewaytheyworkonassignmentsandstruggleforreachingdeadlines.
Theseareexamplesofshorttermorientation.Koenisawholedifferentstorythough
beingtheyoungestinthegroupheisthemostlongtermorientedpersoninour
group.Withaclearvisionofhisfutureafterthiseducationheknowsalmostexactly
whathewantstodointherestofhislife(Nunez,NunezMahdi&Popma,2008).

5.4Individualitycollectivism
Allmembersofourgroupcomefromindividualbasedsocieties,thiscouldhavebeen
agoodthingbutitdidnotalwaysworkoutaswewantedto.Bybeingallindividualist

wethoughtitwasagoodplantodivideourworkequallyandwealldidourpartson
ourownorwiththeassistinggroupmember.Thisdidnotworkasgoodaswe
thoughtitwouldbecausesomepeopleneededtohavealittlepressurebeforethey
woulddotheirwork.Thiscouldhavebeenavoidedbyhavingspecifictimeswhere
wewouldworkatthesameplace.Thisdoesnotmeanweareallegocentricbecause
weworktogetherverywellwhenweareallinthesameplace.Thiscanmostbeseen
