Problem solving chap 1.

4 Measurement
[Perfect score 2007 P2 Q1]. Diagram 1.2 shows micrometer screw gauge which measures diameter of glass rod. The
micrometer screw gauge has zero error as shown in Diagram 1.1

(a) What is the reading of zero error of micrometer screw gauge?

[1 mark]
(b) What is the diameter of the glass rod?

[2 marks]
(c) What is the purpose of measuring of the diameter of the glass rod at several different places ? [1 mark]

(d) Why is the micrometer screw gauge more sensitive device compared to the vernier callipers ?
[1 mark]
(e) Stage one advantage of using the micrometer compared with a metre rule in measuring the
diameter of the glass rod.
[micrometer higher sensitivity compared to metre rule;
using micrometer smaller error in measurement]

[1]

(f) The student is advised to measure the external and internal diameter of the glass rod five times
at different place.
(i) Why is it better to measure five times instead of once only?
[1]
(ii) Explain why the five measurements are taken at five different places.
[1]
[(f) (i) to increases the accuracy of the measurement // higher accuracy]
(ii) shape of the metal pipe may not be uniform

(g) Calculate the distance between points P and Q as shown on the vernier calipers

(h) Figure below shows the reading of a vernier calipers when its calipers are closed.
