MDD1 : CONTEXTUAL FACTORS

MDD Standard

The teacher candidate collects data regarding the institutional and

classroom contexts, the characteristics of the pupils as a group and
its diversity, using this information to plan and deliver instruction.

1. Community in which the school is located and/or serves,

municipality or owner and school factors: Below, describe the
geographic location, community and school population,
socioeconomic profile, and race/ethnicity.
- Escuela D-475 Diego Portales is a public school located in
Talcahuano. The school has 160 students approximately. The
socioeconomic profile can be described as low and precarious. There
are lot of students that are from an orphanage.
1.1. How These Factors May Impact My Lessons: Explain specific ways
that these factors may impact your lesson topics, teaching strategies,
assessment techniques, etc.
- Students of this school have English from first grade. However,
they do not learn as someone can imagine. Their social environment does
not support the learning of English and they do not consider something
important for life. Also, the school does not support in a good way the
learning of this second language, focusing more in traditional subjects as
math or history. In consequence students do not have any interest in
learning English so they do not pay attention in class making difficult the
learning process.
2. Student Characteristics and Their Instructional Implications:
Below, describe how two student characteristics you observed in your
student (e.g., gender, race/ethnicity, interests, student skill levels)
might impact the way you instruct those students. For example,
your planning, motivation, management, or assessment. For each
example of the student characteristic, give a specific instructional
implication that will influence how you plan and implement your
instruction.
2.1 Description of First Characteristic of Student(s) in this Class:
The student is from sixth grade. He shows a lot of interest in
learning English. He always participate in class and ask questions. Most of
their classmates make fun of him, but he take everything as a joke so that
does not affect his learning process.
2.1.1 How This Characteristic Will Impact my Lesson:
As I said before, the student shows interest in learning English, so I
can take this as an advantage. I can use his motivation to motivate his

classmates. I can use this motivation as an example or make this student

work with less motivated students. They must know the importance of
learning this second language, and it will be easier to explain if I have
someone to help demonstrate.

2.2 Description of Second Characteristic of Students in this Class:

The student is from sixth grade too. Her level of English is very low and
there is big lack of interest. Also, she spend the whole class making jokes
and distracting the other students.
2.2.1 How This Characteristic Will Impact my Lesson:
The impact in my lesson is going to be very negative. This is because it is
very difficult to make her understand that English can be useful in her
future. In consequence of her jokes and distraction in class, most of the
student will not pay attention at my lesson and that will make disrupted the
learning/teaching process.
3. Physical Aspects of the Classroom and Their Instructional
Implications: Below, describe how two physical aspects of the
classroom you observed (e.g., posters, room arrangement,
technology) might impact the way you instruct students, for example,
planning, motivation, management, or assessment. For each
example, give a specific instructional implication that will influence
how you plan and implement your instruction.
3.1 Description of First Physical Aspect:
In the classroom that I will apply my lessons there are a lot of poster with
reminders.
3.1.1 How This Aspect Will Impact My Lesson:
The posters with reminders will affect in a positive way the teaching process
because they will look for help in them and not only in the teacher. As in
matter of fact, there is a lot of vocabulary related with different topics, so
they can use it to add new or different vocabulary and relate them.
3.2 Description of Second Physical Aspect:
There is no data in any classroom.
3.2.1How This Aspect Will Impact My Lesson:
If we see this lack of technology in a class as a negative impact we can infer
that we are not going to be able to use TICs. The negative impact will we in

my planning because I am not going to be able to think of a wide variety of

activities, but focus only in more traditional ones.
4. Reflects on the importance of knowing about students and
the context to provide quality teaching
There is a huge relation between knowing about students and the
quality of teaching. If you know the context of your students you will
be able to adapt your lesson plans to them and make it more
efficient. As a result, your students are going to be more motivated
and may find English a useful tool.
