WETHERSFIELD HIGH SCHOOL

PHYSICAL EDUCATION ORIENTATION


ATTENDANCE:
1. APPROVED ABSENCES
Approved absences are those absences that occur when a student is:
a. Absent from school for the day
b. Has been excused from a class by the school nurse or physician
c. Is on a school sanctioned field trip
d. Parental notes are not accepted.
ALL ABSENCES MUST BE MADE-UP!!!!
2. NOT PREPARED FOR CLASS:
a. If any student doesnt dress appropriately for class (sneakers, shorts, tshirt, sweats/warm-ups and socks) OR chooses not to participate fully
in class, he/she will receive a zero.
b. Students may make up the class and the zero will be replaced with a
new score.
c. Students who take advantage of this rule will only be allowed a
certain number of make ups (at the teachers discretion).
3. MAKE-UPS:
a. Every quarter, 1 free approved absence/not prepared for class for PE
Participation/Daily Grade will drop from the students average.
Please note that in Powerschool, the grade for that day will still show
as 0/100. If a student does not miss any class, the lowest grade for
that quarter will drop.
b. If the 2nd missed class is not made up, the student will receive a zero
for the class.
c. Unapproved absences (skips) earn an automatic zero and are
penalized according to the schools attendance policy.
d. After two unapproved absences, the student will be written up.
e. 8 absences (approved/unapproved) = loss of credit
4. TARDINESS:
a. Two unapproved tardies will result in an after school detention.
b. If a student is tardy, they are not able to get higher than an 80/100 for
that day.
c. After a third tardy, a parent/guardian will be contacted.
d. 3 tardies = 1 absence. Excessive tardies may result in loss of credit.

5. MEDICALS:
a. All medicals must be signed by a doctor and brought to the school
nurse. If the excuse is for a long period of time, you will be dropped
from the course and rescheduled into another semester. If it is for a
short term, you may remain in the class and make up the work. It is
the students responsibility to make arrangements to get make-up
assignments and complete in reasonable time.
6. DRESS CODE:
a. Students are required to wear athletic shorts, t-shirts, socks, and
sneakers. Warm-up suits or sweats may also be worn. No cut-off
shirts, blouses, sweaters. No tank tops, spaghetti straps, halter tops, or
tube tops for the girls. No school issued athletic uniforms, or coats
may be worn. Students who do not meet the uniform requirement will
not receive credit for the class. SCHOOL DRESS CODE IS IN
EFFECT.
7. LOCKERS:
a. You should bring in your own lock and use the lockers provided. If
you do not have a lock, please do not leave any valuables in an
unlocked locker. Bring your valuables with you to class. WE ARE
NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR VALUABLES.
b. Do not leave your items in the locker room for the entire semester.
After school sport teams also use lockers during the school year.
CLASS PROCEDURES AND BEHAVIORS:
1. Be in locker room before the final bell rings.
2. Be in the designated area of the gym 4 minutes after the second (late) bell
for attendance to be taken. If you are not in the gym when attendance is
taken, you will be marked tardy.
3. Equipment is only to be used with the permission of the teacher.
4. You are responsible for setting up and taking down the equipment and
putting away any equipment. The class is not dismissed until this
responsibility is fulfilled.
5. A student will be financially responsible for any equipment which is
damaged as a result of abuse.
**Please use the bathroom during changing times as you will not be allowed to
return to the building during class time.**
No gum chewing. No food or drink allowed in the gym or locker rooms.
No hats or any type of head gear will be worn indoors.
The use of profanity will not be allowed during class.
Cooperation and respect will be given to all students and to the teacher, including
substitutes.

Class will be dismissed 8 minutes before the passing bell. All students are
expected to remain by the locker room doors until the bell signals your
dismissal. Leaving early will mean you will have to make-up the class.
Each time I see an MP3 player or a phone during Physical Education class, it
will be an automatic -5 from your daily grade. No questions asked!!
If I see an MP3 player or a phone during Health class, it will be an automatic
after school detention. No questions asked!!
STUDENTS WHO DO NOT FOLLOW THESE PROCEDURES OR CONFORM
TO THE BEHAVIOR WHICH ARE EXPECTED OF THEM WILL BE DEALT
WITH ACCORDINGLY.
GRADING FOR PE CLASSES ON PARTICIPATION:
A

Active participation for full length of class. Focused and attentive. Assist in
equipment set up and put away. Follows directions. Contributes to positive
class spirit. Self-motivated/initiated participation

Active and attentive in activity. Needing minimal prompting to participate.

Attentive participation in activity for less than entire class, but more than
of class. Participates with limited effort. Needing staff/peer prompting
before participating. Acts in isolation of other students. Tends to be confused
when attempting to follow directions.

Attentive participation for less than of class. Participates with minimal


effort. Needing constant prompting. Demonstrates behaviors that inhibit the
growth of other students. Has difficulty following directions.

Does not participate in activity. Does not dress appropriately. Refusal to


participate. Disruptive behaviors. Does not follow directions.

**Every Physical Education class, students will get a daily grade out of 100
points. Points will be deducted off of daily grade at teachers discretion for
disruptive behavior, inappropriate language, and lack of effort/participation.
If a student does not change, they will receive a zero. **

GRADING FOR SEMESTER COURSE:


Quarter 1: 45%
Quarter 2: 45%
Final Exam: 10%
Quarters 1 and 2 (PE and Health):

Participation in Health: 5%
Project/Quiz/Test in Health: 5%
Homework in Health: 10%
PE Knowledge/Fitness Testing: 15%
PE Participation and Effort: 65%

Quarters 1 and 2 (Health only):


Homework: 25%
Weekly Articles: 25%
Project/Quiz/Test: 25%
