Lesson Aims
To reinforce the students understanding of shape and space, by focusing on 2D shapes and the important
aspects that are involved.

Access: Write 2D and two dimensional on the board.

Guided Discovery 10 mins

1. Ask what does it mean by these terms/words? What is a


dimension? Dimension: A measurement of length in one direction.

Eg: 2D shapes only have 2 dimensions - width and height. So 2D


shapes can only be drawn on a piece of paper.
2. If we had a 3D shape this would be 3 dimensions width, height
and depth.
3. Demonstrate that each shape will have an edge and corners or
vertices. Give an example of a square and a triangle.
4. Brainstorm on whiteboard about 2D shapes. Include the different
types of shapes and how many corners, sides. Utilise the A3 piece
of paper.
5. Explain that there are also three different types of triangles.

These are equilateral triangle (all side are equal, like


a normal triangle)

Right angle triangle has a 90degree angle with one


side horizontal and the other side vertical, with one
longer side.

Scalene triangle all sides are different.

- They will take it in turns to read each card in order to
find the correct next card.
