Hazardous waste is waste that is harmful to people, environment and earth.

Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) (also referred to as domestic hazardous waste

or home generated special materials) is waste that is generated from residential
households.
Wastes generated by a company or at an industrial setting are not HHW.
Examples of HHW:

Paints and solvents

Automotive wastes (used motor oil, antifreeze, etc.)
Pesticides (insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, etc.)

Mercury-containing wastes (thermometers, switches, fluorescent lighting, etc.)

Electronics (computers, televisions, cell phones)

Aerosols / Propane cylinders
Caustics / Cleaning agents
Refrigerant-containing appliances
Some specialty Batteries (e.g. lithium, nickel cadmium, or button cell batteries)
Ammunition
Some other examples are acetone, ant/wasp spray, barbeque starters, antifreeze,
car waxes and polishes, glues, hair colouring, aerosol hair spray, lye, nail polish
remover, paint thinners, rechargeable batteries, shoe polish, spa and pool
chemicals, weed killers and windshield washer solution.

Each Canadian province has instituted a household hazardous waste collection

program to make it easy for Canadians to dispose of these toxic items with minimal
environmental impact.
