Wheeler Diff 510 Lesson 1

Module 7 Lesson 2:
Draw and Label a Picture Graph to Represent Data with up to Four Categories
Unit essential questions:
How does sorting & recording data into a table help solve word problems?
How does a picture graph help organize information from a survey?
Why are bar graphs good for making comparisons?
How does a picture graph and bar graph help organize and compare information?
Lesson questions:
How do we draw and label a picture graph?
How do we use information from picture graph to help solve word problems?
Common Core Standard: 2.MD.10 Draw a picture graph and a bar graph (with single-unit
scale) to represent a data set with up to four categories. Solve simple put-together, take-apart, and
compare problems using information presented in a bar graph.
Lesson objective:

Assessment:

Draw and label a picture graph to represent

data with up to four categories
Answer comparison question based on data

Exit Ticket (see attached)

Opening:
Students will gather as group on the rug in the front of the classroom to begin todays
lesson
Displayed on poster paper in front of the room will be todays application problem which
is a comparative problem type that uses known data (without the use of table or graph) to
help solve word problem. The application problem also prepares students to notice the
relations between the tape diagram (learned strategy) and the bars on a bar graph to be
introduced in lesson 2. See below for application problem to be displayed:
Lenny is counting animals in the park. He counts 16 robins, 19 ducks, and 17
squirrels. How many more robins and ducks did Lenny count than squirrels.
Students will participate in Talk-n-Turn activity with a partner sitting next to them to
discuss how and what strategies they will use to help them solve this word problem.
Students will be invited up to the poster board in front of the room to demonstrate their
strategies.
Students will return to their seats to continue with lesson.
Procedure:
On Smart board will be displayed Animal Classification Table containing 4 categories
(bird, mammal, reptile, and fish) that were created from Lesson 1.

Wheeler Diff 510 Lesson 1

Whole group discussion will occur in regard to using data from Animal Classification
Table to create a picture graph. Students will each be given Template 1(vertical
orientation) and Template 1 will also be displayed on Smart board for all students to see.
Teacher will discuss that graphs help us understand information and we need to know
what the graph is about (i.e. title, labels, legend, and symbol). Teacher will lead students
through each step involved in labeling their individual picture graphs by writing on
Template 1 displayed on Smart board.
Students will then begin to draw circles in each column above the correct animal category
listed on their Template and write the total for each category count right on the graph.
Teacher will now pose questions based on picture graph while students write their
answers on personal white boards. (i.e. How many birds, mammals, and reptiles did we
count? Which category has the fewest animals? The most? )
Students will then use the sentence frame, How many fewer (more)
are
there than
? to ask partner a question about the graph
Repeat the process to create a picture graph of the data from the Animal Habitats table,
using the second graph (horizontal orientation) on Template 1. As students demonstrate
understanding, allow them to work with a partner or independently.

Tiered by: Challenge

Note: This next activity is designed to scaffold from the isolated columns and rows on
Template 1 to use of grid paper to create a picture graph (Template 2). Teacher will conduct a
survey in classroom to find out what the students favorite animal is (bird, mammal, reptile, and
fish)
Tier 1 Comprehension Level: Students will draw and label a picture graph on graph paper
(Template 2) to represent data with up to four categories and discuss the process needed to
answer 4 comparison questions based on data with a partner.
Tier 2 Analysis Level: Students will draw and label a picture graph on graph paper (Template 2)
to represent data with up to four categories and will create and solve 2 comparison questions
based on data with a partner.
Tier 3 Evaluation Level: Student will draw and label a picture graph on graph paper (Template
2) to represent data with up to four categories, create and solve 2 comparison questions based on
data and determine how a picture graph helps us organize information from a survey?
Closure: As students demonstrate proficiency creating and interpreting a graph, students will
then complete Lesson 2 Problem set. Teacher may at this time continue to work with any
students who need additional support.
