Reflective Analysis of Portfolio Artifact

Rationale/Reflection
NAEYC Standard:
STANDARD 4. USING DEVELOPMENTALLY EFFECTIVE APPROACHES
Candidates prepared in early childhood degree programs understand that
teaching and learning with young children is a complex enterprise, and its
details vary depending on childrens ages, characteristics, and the settings
within which teaching and learning occur. They understand and use positive
relationships and supportive interactions as the foundation for their work
with young children and families. Candidates know, understand, and use a
wide array of developmentally appropriate approaches, instructional
strategies, and tools to connect with children and families and positively
influence each childs development and learning.

Brief Description of Evidence:

As part of my ECED 243 Cognitive Curriculum course I worked with a partner

to plan and implement a process based art project with a class of
preschoolers and then auctioned the students work with a partnering agency.
My partner and I based our lesson on rainbows, this helped students
understand the science of rainbows and to review their colors. Our main
project was to have the students punch out, and or trace large and small
circles. The students then glued the large and small circles together. MY
partner and I then collected all the punch-outs and traced circles and glued
them together to create a rainbow mobile. Our side project for the students
was to create a rainbow in a cup. The students used droppers to drop
different colors into a cup of water that was topped off shaving cream. The
colored droplets fell through the shaving cream cloud and into the water to
create new colors.

Analysis of What I Learned:

Through planning a processed based art project I learned how to create,
plan, and implement a lesson plan. After implementing the lesson I was able
to self-reflect and evaluate what could be done differently the next time I use
the lesson plan. When evaluating our lesson plan we realized we needed to
change some of our materials and add more prep time.

How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the

NAEYC Standard:
After completing a process based art lesson plan I am competent I can create,
implement and evaluate developmentally meaningful and challenging curriculum

for preschool students. I can do this by knowing the central concepts and structures
of content areas for academic success. I know how to evaluate plans to alter to the
students learning.
