‘The standards owe a large deb to the advisory committee, executive committe, expert
reviewers and prior APS curriculum area coordinators, the Guide fr School Facility
Appra'sal developed by Harold L. Hawkins, Ed.D. and H. Edward Lilley, Ph.D, in
‘cooperation with the Council of Educational Facility Planners Intemational. Ths guide served.
as the onceptual base from which adaptations were made in order to adjust to the unique
characteristics of APS. The Facility Condition Survey Standards, developed by the Jefferson
County Publie Schools in Colorado, was also an excellent resource for ‘he original version of
the policies and standarde,

‘School & Site Factors Specific to Different Schools
‘This section is not pat of the standards and should be customized for each new school or
addition project. Theinformation is for specific site and facility parameters not covered in the
‘more “performance based” standards that follow.
The requirements forthe project are as follows:
1. The Architect / Ergineer (A/E) will coordinate their work with the Department of
Facilities Design and Construction (FD+C) Project Manager and participate inthe school
Design Assistance Committee process.
2. EDIT for project
‘+ The Schoo! facility shall be capable of educating any child, including severely
‘bchavior disordered students and/or the intensive support system (ISP) special needs
students with multiple, profound disabilities. Standard “neighborhood” special
‘education requirements are separately defined programs forthe purpose of this
document and are included inthis facility. A new schoo! will be completely
accessible to all students, staff, and visitors to the extent stipulated inthe building
codes.
+The new elementary school will house kindergarten and pre-kindergarten to S® grade
programs.
3, If this new facility isin two phases, the permanent core in Phase ! shall prove all
specialized spaces to operat a fully functioning school and be sized to handle 650
students (and capable of expanding temporarily to 1,000 students without excessive strain
‘on the facility). The construction of Phase 2 is to be possible with as lite disruption as
possible of permanent and portable spaces in Phase 1
4. The A/E will thoroughly review files ofthe APS Real Estate Directo to ensure that legal
