School Reading Problems Lesson Reflection

Fiona Kelly

Objective

Objective November 9th- Objectives:

Student will be able to review the
fluency checklist, as well as match
pictures (that resemble words, such as a
clock for time) to blank spaces in a
passage, and read the passage with the
appropriate pictures in the appropriate
spot.
Objective November 11th- (same for
November 9th.)

Teaching Strategy
Fluency
November 9th- I reviewed the
fluency checklist with him. When I
went over this with him, I was
made sure to stress the
importance of using appropriate
accuracy, reading at an
appropriate rate, and the
importance of reading with
expression due to proper
punctuation. After I went over this
with him, I read the passage,
without the pictures in the proper
spaces. After I modeled proper
fluency, I had him put the correct
pictures in the proper spaces.
After he did this, I had him read
the passage. After he read, I went
over the fluency checklist again,
and I asked him if he thinks that
he read with proper fluency. We
talked about how he read, and he
said he enjoyed the activity.

Comprehension
November 9th and 11th- Liam was
able to make logical predictions

Outcomes

(Descriptive evidence objective was

met)

November 9th- He was able to go

over the fluency checklist, and put
the pictures in the proper spaces
to complete the passage. I feel
that he is improving with fluency,
although he sometimes struggles
with how fast he reads the
passage. During the passage I
told him to stop reading, and to
look up and to remember that
reading at an appropriate rate is
part of being a fluent reader.
Then, he read with proper fluency.
I feel that this activity worked
really well with him, so I would
like to continue to keep
implementing this as a fluency
lesson.

November 9th and 11th- He was

able to contribute ideas as to

importance of comprehending
important details in a story, answer
comprehension questions about chapter
ten, and add any new information to the
graphic organizer/story map that he has
been completing.
November 11th- Objectives: Student will
be able to review the importance of
comprehending important details in a
story, ask his own comprehension
questions about chapter eleven, and add
any new information to the graphic
organizer/story map that he has been
completing.

November 9- Objectives: Student will

be able to brainstorm what a theme is, and
write a paragraph about a possible theme
in the story (competition,) and why he
thinks it is a theme in the story.
November 11- Objectives: Student will be
able to brainstorm what a theme is, and
watch a short video on theme, and write a
bullet and box on theme, and details that a
theme in a story should have.

on what he was about to read. On

Monday, I wrote comprehending
on the white board. I had him
write down what he thought that
this meant, and I gave him the
accurate definition. We had a
discussion about comprehension,
and why it is important to
comprehend details in the story. I
had him read each chapter
silently, because I feel that he
needs to work on comprehending
material in his head. After he was
done reading, he added
information to his graphic
organizer and story map. On
Wednesday, I had him make his
own questions, and this helped
him to remember information that
he felt was important throughout
the chapter.

Writing
November 9th- I asked Liam if he
knew what a theme of a story
could be. He was unsure, so I
wrote the word, theme, on the
white board. I told him that a
theme is the message that the
author is trying to send in the
story. I made a word web, and we
went over things that a theme
may contain. I brought up the
book that we have been reading,
Winners Take All, and I asked
him if he knew a possible theme

what comprehending is on
Monday. On both Monday and
Wednesday, he was able to make
logical predictions, and read
silently. He answered the
questions, and made up his own
questions. I feel that he
comprehended what was going on
in both chapter ten and eleven,
and was able to add to his graphic
organizer and story map.

November 9th and November 11th

- He struggled with the concept of
theme. I went over it with him as
much as I could, and tried to give
him as many examples of theme. I
feel that I could have gone a little
slower with him, so I could make
sure that he thoroughly
understood the information. On
Wednesday, I feel that he
understood the concept of theme
more.

for Winners Take All. He thought

of some ideas, and I told him that
competition was a major theme
of Winners Take All. We went
over how competition relates to
the story. I had him complete a
worksheet on themes too.
November 11th- We had a deeper
discussion on theme, and he
brainstormed some other possible
themes that could fit for Winners
Take All.

November 9 and November 11

Objectives: Student will be able to review
the aw and au sort, as well as add new
words that they think fit with either the
aw or au pattern, and put them into the
sort.

November 9th and 11th- I

presented the sort to Liam. I put
the two different categories in
front of him, and I scattered the
rest of the words. I had him sort
the words, and I had him spell the
words aloud. I asked him to spell
some of the words without looking
at the sort. After he did this, I had
him pick five words of his choice,
and he wrote sentences using the
words.

November 11th- He was able to

sort the words without a problem.
He still has trouble spelling the
words without looking, so I think
that it is important to keep going
over this sort with him so he
masters the aw and au pattern.
He was able to write creative
sentences without a problem too.
