Teaching Philosophy

Teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) in the classroom when students have
competency in their first language, helps us to interact with students, teachers and
other people using an effective range of different communication skills. In UAE,
Sheik Khalifa Bin Zayed desires us to learn English language for developing our
second language skills to create a good communication with foreign people. This is
because, he has provided all the requirements for Education to improve learning in
UAE. As I am teacher, I see the best way of learning English for improving second
language skills is to practice speaking with people, reading books to develop
vocabulary, watching movies to listen to the pronunciation of words, listening and
engaging with other people. So, I chose teaching, because I believe that teachers are
responsible for motivating students in learning to help them to improve their progress
in learning and to give them the skills and qualifications for their own future.

Beliefs of Teaching

Teaching and learning are import part of developing our learning and communication
skills with others by using interpersonal skills through communication and discussion
within small groups, face to face settings, direct eye contact, verbal communication
through speaking and critical thinking through asking questions. The purpose of
education is to support children in developing skills, and building knowledge.
Teaching provides information for people to build their knowledge. Learning comes

in many forms from receiving information from teachers, books, websites and
interactions between students in class.

Classroom Management

I believe that effective classroom management enhances learning and teaching and
that when teachers set clear rules and offer rewards that student interaction is
increased and management of student behavior becomes easier. This is part of
effective teaching methods and it strengthens student skills in language, group work
and other areas, while developing a more engaging and positive learning environment
in the classroom. Effective classroom management helps to establish rules, allow the
lesson to run more smoothly and create an environment for motivating students to
participate more (Bart, 2013).
In my teaching practice, I have used rules and rewards for the classroom that let me
feel more comfortable in engaging students in learning English as a Second Language
in group work which leads them into more discussion, greater interaction in the lesson
and creates a healthy atmosphere of competition between groups. Furthermore, it
allows me to check their work and understanding of the lesson and learning outcomes.
Students have less misbehavior in the classroom and I have found that using a points
system helps to encourage my students to progress and work harder. Skinners point
out that rewards of points or stars help to provides teacher to manage behavior and
encourage better learning outcomes (Kyriacou, 2009). The figure (Figure 1.0) below
shows some examples of how I have used rewards and competition as a way to
encourage good behavior and achieve better outcomes with my students.

Communication Skills

I believe that effective communication skills are an important part of teaching and
learning which affect a teacher. Through teachers listening attentively to their
students questions, using effective body language, and through teachers
communicating effectively with parents to help them support their childs learning,
much more positive learning outcomes can be achieved with students. I believe that
effective use of body language is a powerful communication skill that a teacher can
use to support her verbal communication skills (Communication Skills World, 2013)
Furthermore, it can also have positive effects on colleagues at staff meetings or
conferences.
In my teaching practice, I am aware of and I try to use effective body language with
my students such as direct eye contact, precise verbal and non-verbal communication,
and using effective questioning based on Inquiry Learning. I have noticed that my use
of more effective body language and encouraged my students to share, participate,
listen and has also increased their ability to understand me as a teacher better. I have

found that effective communication involves the process of sharing information,

listening, and developing the ability to understand, and develop effective control of
students (British Orchard Nursery 20l0).

Conclusion

From my point of view, I believe that each teacher can develop and have good
experiences through effectively managing the classroom and using effective and
strong communication skills with learners. I strongly believe that rules and rewards in
the English Language classroom helps students to become motivated and interact
more in class and enable them to develop their Second Language English language
skills. In the future, I will apply during my teaching all of my beliefs that I have
mentioned above about classroom management and communication skills because
these methods will help me to develop student learning while increasing their English
Language skills.
