Explore transformations and dilations with a fish you will create. Part
1 Plotting a Fish
1.
List the ordered pairs for the fish on the graph to the right.
Start at the snout of the fish and move clockwise in the
order shown below. Of the 24 ordered pairs used to make
the fish, the remaining coordinates are integers. Some
points are repeated.
A( 4 , 5 )
I ( 11 , 6 )
P( 9, 3 )
B( 5 , 6 )
J ( 12 , 5 )
Q( 8 , 3 )
C ( 6 , 6.7)
K ( 14 , 7 )
R( 7 , 3 )
D( 7 , 7 )
L ( 13 , 5 )
S( 6

E( 8 , 7 )
M ( 14 , 3 )
T( 5

F ( 9 , 8 )
J ( 12 , 5 )
U( 6 , 5 )
G( 9 , 7 )
N ( 11 , 4 )
T( 5
H ( 10, 6.7)
O ( 10, 3.3 )

Enter the data into L1 and L2 in the above order. The first
point and the last should be the same. Use Stat Edit to
access the lists. Set the window settings as shown to the right
such that the x-values range from 0 to 18 and the yvalues
range from 0 to 12. Press 2nd Y= to turn on the Stat Plot.
Press 2nd zoom to access format to turn on the gridline and
set up color on the TI-84C.

Part 2 Move the Fish
(When I changed this to a word document not everything came out exactly how it was online. Some of
the symbols are different.)
On the Home screen press 2nd mode to quit out of a
graph or other screen you will perform some operations
on lists. First, turn on Plot 2 as shown to the right. To do this
press 2nd Y= for StatPlot. Press 2nd 3 and 2nd 4 to get L3 and
L4.
To enter the arrow, press =.
Sketch your graph of L3 and L4 below. Press graph to
help you sketch the graph.

7. Describe the effect of the change in each of the above. How did the fish move? What happens
when a number is added to or subtracted from the x-values of a figure? Is the new fish congruent
or similar?
a
When a number is added to the x-values, the fish shifts to the right. When a number is
subtracted from the x-values, the fish shifts to the left. The new fish is congruent because
it is the same size and the same shape as the original fish.

10. Describe the effect of the change in each of the above. How did the fish move? What happens
when a number is added to or subtracted from the y-values of a figure? Is the new fish congruent
or similar?
a
By adding numbers to the y values, the fish moves up on the graph. By subtracting
numbers from the y values, the fish moves down the graph. The new fish is congruent
because it is still the same size and shape.
I would subtract 9 from the x values and then 5 from the y values.

15. How did the fish change? What happens when a number is multiplied by the x-values and y-values
of a figure? Is the new fish congruent or similar?
a
In number 13, the magenta fish is a bigger version of the red fish because I multiplied both
the x and y values by a whole number.
In number 14m the magenta fish is a smaller version of the red fish because I multiplied
both the x and y values by fractions.
The new fish are similar. They are the same shape as the red fish but different sizes.
16. Consider the following operations: rotations, reflections, translations, dilations. Which operation
will yield a similar figure? Explain.
a
A similar figure is a figure that is the same shape as another figure but a different size.
Dilations yield a similar figure because it keeps the same shape but changes the size.
17. Consider the following operations: rotations, reflections, translations, dilations. Which operation
will yield a congruent figure? Explain.
A congruent figure is a figure that is exactly the same in size and shape as another figure.
Rotations, reflections, translations, all keep the same size and shape of the figure so they
would yield a congruent figure.
