SCIENTIFIC FANTASY:
1. Describe your creature, and then describe its adaptations (think of adjectives
like hairy, sticky, or camouflaged)
I created a mutant salamander. He has deep sockets sunken into his
back hindquarters, which are formed like hexagonal honeycombs, which can
store whatever he needs to store for long periods of time. Instead of normal
amphibian eyes, he has evolved new lenses for his eyes that can extend as
they zoom and pan out. On his back, bulky morel mushrooms propagate,
which house tiny mites. His short, back limbs have lengthy phalanges.
2. Name the environmental hazard your creature has to live through, and some
of its conditions. Describe how the adaptations help your creature to survive
(think about an environmental issue and how the creature can overcome it)
An asteroid has struck the earth, creating rains of fire and melting
Earths crust. The mutant salamander needs its deep sockets in order to store
food, which is very hard to come by. The lenses that he needs protect his
vision against the white-hot, fiery inferno of the earth as it becomes
enveloped in lava. The morels that grow on his back encourage little mites to
live in them, and they have a symbiotic relationship (the mushrooms provide
shelter for the mites, and the mites produce a fire-proof slime that coats the
salamander. His long toes help him to skim across the lava flows more
effectively, without sinking in.
