Lesson Plan Day Two

Subject: English Language Arts

Topic: Sunshine and Shadows

Grade Level: 3rd Grade

of the discussion
CCSS. ELA- Literacy.W.3.6 With guidance and support from adults, use
technology to produce and publish writing (using keyboarding skills) as well as
to interact and collaborate with others.

Objectives:
In this lesson, students will be able to create a KidsPix image to demonstrate their
knowledge of sunshine and shadows. The following objectives will be met:
1. Students will be able to identify the effect of words in the text
2. Students will be able to define shadow
3. Students will be able to define sunshine
4. Students will be able to compare and contrast sunshine and shadows
Teaching Materials:
Copy of Anchor text Moonbears Shadow
Class set of IPads
KidsPix software
Lesson Duration:
Observation- Class period- 90 minutes
Data Collection and preparation - 90 minutes
Accommodations: Modifications and accommodations will be provided for students
with Special Needs and ESL learners by providing repeated directions, peer-tutoring,
and shortened assignments. Gifted students will be asked to assist other
students and will do further research about the topic.

Procedures:
Engage: Introduce students to the terms sunshine and shadow. This activity will
happen outside so students can understand that the source of their shadow is the
sunlight. Gather prior knowledge from students to determine their baseline
understanding of shadows and sunshine
Read Moonbears Shadow by Frank Asch.
Explain: During reading, ask students to recall events of the story that shows
interactions between sunshine and shadows. Ask questions that make students
recall characters actions.
Explore: Students will work in groups of fours to discover more about todays
lesson. Follow the instructions below:

You and your group will draw images to demonstrate your understanding
of sunshine and shadows
Each one of your group members will need to create an image
After completing your image, explain to your group members what your
image represents to demonstrate your knowledge of sunshine and
shadow

Elaborate: After students share their images with their classmates, they will vote
to determine which one they want to present to their classmates. They should
pick one that accurately demonstrates the relationship between the sunshine and
the shadows.
Evaluate: Students will be evaluated individually according to Image Rubric
