Understand addition as putting together and adding to, and
understand subtraction as taking apart and taking from.

Date:
TBA
Single/Multi-Day Lesson:
Single

2. Solve addition and subtraction word problems, and add and subtract
within 10, e.g., by using objects or drawings to represent the problem.
Writing Standards K-2
Research to Build and Present Knowledge
8. With guidance and support from adults, recall information from
experiences or gather information from provided sources to answer a
question.
Language Standards K-5
Conventions of Standard English
1. Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English
grammar and usage when writing or speaking.
I. DESCRIPTION OF CONTENT & CONTENT TYPE (Fact, Procedure, Concept, or Principle):
Students will combine characters using addition and subtraction to create their own math story and word
problem. (Procedure)
II. LEARNING OUTCOME (Objective):
The student will apply addition and subtraction using characters to make their math word problem.
III. CURRICULUM CONNECTION (How lesson fits into larger unit sequence):
In a previous lesson students learned how to add objects together to create addition and subtraction
number sentences. In the following lessons, students will construct their own math sentences by
creating math stories.
IV. INSTRUCTION
A. ENGAGEMENT (Motivational Activities):
Students will watch a YouTube video of a story using addition.
The teacher will have a huge magic bag of printed characters (animals, objects, flowers, etc.) and
the students will each get to come up and pick eight characters from the magic bag; they will
explore counting with the characters.
B. INSTRUCTIONAL SEQUENCE (Teaching Methodology with Student Activities):

*Note: Use CTRL + TAB for indents in outline format.

C. Step #1: Tell Me About Addition and Subtraction

a. As a class, the teacher reviews addition and subtraction.
What is addition? What is subtraction?
b. Teacher listens to students responses.
Step #2: Addition and Subtraction with Blocks
a. With neighbors, students will each be given some counting cubes. Teacher will ask addition
and subtraction problems. Students will use the cubes to answer the math problems.
Show me 5 cubes, add 6 more cubes. How many cubes are there in total? 5+6=11
Show me 10 cubes, subtract 4 cubes. How many cubes are left? 10-4=6
b. Students will compare/share their answers with their neighbor.
Step #3: Count the Dots
a. Students will each be given 3 cards with stickers. To create a math problem, they will
double the amount of stickers that are already on the card.
In total, how many stickers are on your card?
Write the addition problem you created.
Ex: 4 stickers are on their card, they will add 4 more. They will write 4+4=8
b. Students will hold up their number cards.
Step #4: Application Activity
a. Students will write a math storybook. They will use characters to write an
addition/subtraction story and show the math problem they have created.
Draw a background for your math storybook, and choose how many characters you want in
your story.
Make an addition problem with your characters.
Write your addition problem on the bottom of your math storybook.
b. The teacher will walk around the class observing and assisting when needed.
Step #5: Summative Evaluation
a. Students will write/draw in their journals. They answer the following questions: What did
we do today? What objects did we use? How did it make you feel? What was your favorite
part of the lesson?
b. Teacher will read journals.
D. APPLICATION ACTIVITY (Practice and/or Reflection):
See step #4.
E. MATERIALS & RESOURCES:

V. ASSESSMENT STRATEGIES (Methods for Obtaining Evidence of Learning):

Formative: Students will be asked questions throughout the lesson to insure understanding as well as
having the teacher observe groups by walking around.
Summative: See step #5A.
VI. ACCOMMODATIONS FOR INDIVIDUAL LEARNERS (CONTENT, INSTRUCTION, and
PRACTICE):
Repetition of addition and subtraction problems.
