Effects of temperature

on glue

Moore 7.11 Engineering Mat/Mech

Question

How does different temperatures effect the

drying time of glue on wood?

Abstract

You use glue for everything. But have you ever thought
about how different temperatures affect the drying time. To
determine the best temperature to keep your object and
glue at for the fastest drying time, this could help you out.

Hypothesis

If I put the glue on the wood in a colder

temperature during the drying process, then
the glue would have a longer drying process
because the glue would be cold so it
wouldnt be able to stick right cause it
would freeze.

Materials
Popsicle sticks(30-35)
E6000 glue
Freezer
Room temperature air
Outdoor temperature air
Timer

Procedure
Apply a thin strip of glue to the popsicle sticks
Push the sticks together to get the excess
glue off
Record the temperature for the freezer, room,
and outside
Stick 10 in the freezer, room, and outside for
24 hours and then check it
Leave in for longer if needed (making sure to
time it)
Repeat for three trails and record

Variables
Independent variable- The temperature
Dependent variable- cure time
Control variable- The glue and popsicle
sticks

In conclusion

My hypothesis was supported because the

one that worked the best was the room
temperature. This one had the lowest
average. The 87 degree temperature had
the second lowest and the highest average
was the freezer temperature. I believe this
happened because it was harder for the
glue to dry with the cold air around it and
that made the moisture evaporate.
