Recite it when you go to sleep, and you will have good dreams. Recite it before a conflict,
and you will be completely victorious. Recite it when you embark on any project, and you
will be successful. If you recite this prayer every day, the length of your life, your splendour,
renown, and wealth will all increase, you will find perfect happiness, you will accomplish
your aims exactly as you wish, all harmful actions and obscurations will be purified and all
your wishes for higher realms, liberation and omniscience will be fulfilled. These are the
words of the Buddha himself.
This prayer arose from the lake of Jampal Gyep Dorjes mind on the third day of the fifth
month of the Fire Monkey year (1896), an auspicious time according to the configuration of
planets, sun and constellations.

Sadhana for Invoking the Blessing of Buddha Sakyamuni
by Mipham Rinpoche

Namo guru shakyamunaye!

The Sutra of King-like Concentration says, Whenever ones walking, sitting, standing or
sleeping, if one can recall the Capable One, Then He will always be in his presence,
Bestowing blessings that transgress vast suffering. The sutra also says, His body is of the
color of pure gold, The Protector of the world is ever so gracious, anyone w ho applies
mindfulness on him, This Bodhisattva will enter the state of meditation. Therefore we
should practice mindfulness of the peerless Teacher, Lord Buddha Sakyamuni, in the
following way:
(First, recite the refuge prayer.

Recite three times begin)

sangye chdang tsok kyi chok nam la
In the Buddha, Dharma and Sangha,

changchub bardu dak ni kyab su chi
I take refuge until the attainment of Bodhi-fruit,

dak gi gom dae gyipsnam kyi
With the merit of practicing meditation and recitation,

dro la pen chir sangye drubpar shok
May I attain buddhahood for the benefit of all beings.
39

Then generate the four immeasurable attitudes.

Reflect on the fact that the

appearance of all phenomenon is devoid of intrinsic nature. By reciting the following)

ah

Non-arising emptiness and dependent arising,

nangwa gakmzungjuk gyumtsul
Manifested in the form of unceasing and illusory union,

The mere mindfulness of him liberates us from the two extreme
notions of samsara and nirvana,

namdrol dewa chok gi pal tsolwa
And bestows us the glory of sublime bliss.

kyab kndpdaknyi chenpor sal
He is the Great Lord, the embodiment of all refuge.

Visualize the Buddha in this way, and then believe that Buddha appears immediately and
truly in the sky in front of you. This is because the wisdom bodies of the Buddhas are not
limited by time or space. It is said, Whoever contemplates the Buddha, and The Buddha
will be in front of him. He will constantly bless him, and release him from his wrongdoings. If you visualize the Buddha, you will accumulate merits that are non-exhaustible,
and your virtuous roots will not go to waste. As the Avatamsaka Sutra puts it, Anyone who
sees, hears or makes offerings to the Victorious Ones, His merit will increase immeasurably,
Eradicating defilements and samsaric sufferings, And this compounded phenomena will not
exhaust in the meanwhile. Any aspiration made in front of the Buddha will come true.
Sutra Teaching the Excellent Qualities of Manjushris Buddhafield says, All phenomena
arise under conditions, and depends on ones aspiration. Any aspiration made by any person
will develop into a corresponding result. Develop firm understanding for this principle.

I wish to benefit sentient beings as infinite as the vast expanse,

So that you, Lord of the Dharma, are constantly pleased,

And may all attain the state of the King of the Dharma.
44

We the unprotected and degenerate sentient beings,

Are held by you kindly with your extraordinary compassion,

All existence of the Three Jewels of this land at this time,

You are then our sole refuge, unparalleled and supreme,

I pray to you from my heart, with conviction and faith,

ngn gyi damcha chenpo manyelwar
Please do not forget the great aspirations you had made in the past,

changchub bardu tukjjedzin dz

And hold us with your compassion until we attain the supreme
enlightenment.

45

Visualize that the Buddha is right in front of you with fierce conviction and concentrate
single-pointedly as you repeat the following as many times as you can:

lama tnpa chomdenddeshyin shekpa drachompa yangdakpar
dzokpsangye pal gyalwa shakya tubpa la chak tsal lo chdo
kyab su chi o
Supreme Teacher, Bhagavan, Thus Gone One, Foe Destroyer,
Worthy of Offering and Truly Perfect Buddha Sakyamuni, the
Glorious Conqueror, I prostrate to you, I make offerings to you, and I
take refuge in you.

Then, recite the mantra mentioned in the Short Prajanaparamita Sutra as you
invoke the Buddhas blessing:

tayata om munmunmaha munaysoha
(

then repeat as many times as possible)

om munmunmaha munaysoha

During this time, be mindful of the virtues of the Buddha and visualize the Buddhas body.
One-pointedly and clearly and with the application of conviction while you repeat the
following once:

tnpku lyeshe kyi zer natsokpnangwa chenpdak dang

semchen tamchkyi dribpa tamchsal shying
Visualize that through reciting the name and the mantra, the Supreme
46

Teachers body emanates all kinds of wisdom light, eradicating the

negative karma and hindrances of me and all sentient beings,

tekpa chenplam gyi ynten tsulshyin du kytchirmidokpsa
nnpar bsams la
And then the virtues of the Mahayana path genuinely arise within us,
and thereby we attain the position of non-retrogression.

Dedicate all the virtuous roots to the unexcelled enlightenment and aspire to apply the seal.
In general, whenever you are walking, moving around, lying down or sitting, you should be
mindful of the Supreme Teacher. Even at night, visualize the actual Buddhas radiant body
emanating light to all directions like extremely bright daytime, then fall asleep in such a

47

state. In daily life, constantly remind yourself of how the Buddha developed the bodhicitta
mind in the past; exert yourself in following the examples of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas
of the past, present and future and commit yourself to the precious bodhicitta mind without
slackening your efforts, and try your best in adopting the general and specific conduct of the
bodhisattva, especially be diligent in the practice of shamatha and vipashyana, and by doing
so, you will give meaning to the freedom and advantages of your human life. It is said in
sutras that by merely hearing the name of the Buddha, you will be gradually guided to the
non-retrogressing Mahayana path. In the Short Prajnaparamita Sutra, it is said, All Buddhas
were born from this dharani. Buddha Sakyamuni too became enlightened by the power of
this dharani, Avalokitesvara attained the fruit of Bodhisattva by the power of this dharani,
merely listening to this dharani and you will effortlessly gain vast merit and eradicate all
hindrances and negative karma. If you practice this mantra, then you will attain
enlightenment without obstacles from the evil spirits. The other sutras also records that
reciting this dharani once has boundless merits and benefits such as purifying all your
wrongful deeds of the past 80,000 kalpas. It is the supreme heart mantra of Buddha
Sakyamuni. How to develop conviction in Buddha Sakyamuni, and how to practice
shamatha and vipashyana were recorded in other sastras (in the Extensive Biography of
Buddha Sakyamuni-the White Lotus Commentary, for example).

This liturgy was requested by the treasury of three trainings, On Orgyen Tenzin Norbu, with
an auspicious kadak. Recently, Rinpoche also entrusted Tulku Jigme Pema Dechen
Rinpoche with gold, auspicious kadak and other objects of offering in the request for a
speedy completion of this sadhana. At the request of these two masters, and with an
unwavering conviction for the Excellent Teacher, I, Mipham Jamyang Gyamtso, Dharma
teacher of the turbid world in mere name, a disciple of Buddha Sakyamuni, completed this
sadhana on the 8th of January, Iron Mouse year in Phuntsok Norbu Monastery at the foot of
the holy Tza Dorji Punchuk mountain of Sershul. May the benefit of sentient beings
continue without stopping, and may true and unequalled blessings from the Buddha arise in
the mental continuum of all sentient beings who see, hear, read and touch this sadhana.

51

DE WA CHEN P NGANG NE DA

Recite from the state of great bliss:

OM AMIDEWA AYU SIDDHI HUNG HRI

Reciting the eleven-syllable root mantra three hundred-thousand times, spiritual attainments
will be obtained. Then rest without visualizing the deitys appearance. Follow this with
dedication and make aspirations. This will quell untimely death in this life and in the future
one will reach the path of great bliss liberation. Therefore, fortunate ones, practice!

wealth will be accumulated, and all this persons heart desires will be achieved, and he will
gain rebirth in the pure land of his desire such as the land of Supreme Bliss. This
purification sadhana can be practiced by the practitioners of sutrayana and vajrayana, as well
as those who have not received a vajrayana empowerment. You should also know that his
sadhana bears the testimony of an assembly of tens of thousands of monks including His
Holiness Jigmey Phuntsok of Larong Buddhist Institute. May auspiciousness increase!)

The Sutra of the Recollection of the Noble Three Jewels

104

105

106

I prostrate to the All-Knowing One.
Thus, the Buddha bhagavat tathgata arhatsayaksa Buddha, possessor of
insight and its feet, the sugata, knower of the world, driver who tames beings,
unsurpassed, teacher of devas and men, is the buddhabhagavat. That tathgata
corresponds to a cause of merits. His roots of virtue do not go to waste. He is
fully ornamented with all patience. His basis is troves of merit. The excellent
minor signs adorn him. The flowers of the major marks bloom on him.
Perceiving his activity, it being just right, there is harmony. Seeing him, there
is no disharmony. He brings true joy to those who long through faith. His
praj cannot be overpowered. His strengths cannot be challenged. He is the
teacher of all sentient beings. He is the father of bodhisatvas. He is the king of
noble persons. He is the captain of those who journey to the city of nirvana.
His wisdom is unfathomable. His confidence is inconceivable. His speech is
complete purity. His melody is pleasing. One never has enough of viewing the
image of his body. His body is unparalleled. He is not contaminated by the
things of desire. He is very much not contaminated by the things of form. He is
not mixed with the things of formlessness. He is completely liberated from
the sufferings. He is utterly completely liberated from the skandhas. He does
not possess dhtus. His yatanas are restrained. He has totally cut the knots. He
is completely liberated from the torments. He is liberated from craving. He has
crossed over the river. His wisdom is totally complete. He abides in the
wisdom of the Buddha bhagavats who arise in the past, present, and future. He
does not abide in nirvana. He abides in the limit of the authentic itself. He
abides on the level of looking upon all sentient beings. These are the true
qualities of the greatness of the body of the Buddha bhagavat.
The holy dharma is good in the beginning, good in the middle, and good at the
end. Its meaning is excellent, its wording is excellent. It is not adulterated, is
totally complete, is total purity, and is total purification. The bhagavat has
taught the dharma well. It is authentic sight. It is free from sickness. Its time
has no interruption. It brings one in. Seeing it is meaningful. It is known to the
wise through individual self-knowing. The dharma taught by the bhagavat is
properly revealed in the Vinaya. It is renunciation. It causes one to arrive at

107

complete enlightenment. It is without disharmony and does have inclusion. It

has reliability. It does end the journey.
As for the sangha of the great vehicle, they have entered into good, have
entered into insight, have entered into straightness, and have entered into
harmony. They are worthy of joined palms, they are worthy of prostration.
They are a field of the glory of merit. They are great ones thoroughly trained in
gifts. They are a place for generosity. They are in all places even a great place
for generosity.
The protector who possesses great kindness,
The all-knowing teacher,
The basis of oceans of merit and virtue,
I prostrate to the tathgata.
Pure, the cause of freedom from passion,
Virtuous, liberating from the lower realms,
This alone is the supreme, ultimate truth:
I prostrate to the dharma, which is peace.
Having been liberated, they show the path to liberation;
They are fully dedicated to the disciplines;
They are a holy field of merit and possess virtue:
I prostrate to the sagha.
I prostrate to the Buddha, the leader;
I prostrate to the dharma, the protector;
I prostrate to the sagha, the community:
I prostrate respectfully and always to these three.
The Buddhas virtues are inconceivable;
The dharmas virtues are inconceivable;
The saghas virtues are inconceivable;
Having faith in these inconceivables,
Therefore, the fruitions are inconceivable:
May I be born in a completely pure realm.
Substances that have been offered to the Three Jewels and plunder from others
I have completely abandoned all such impure and perverted nourishment;
This food is in accord with the dharma, free from evil deeds:
May the health of my body flourish.
Then bless the food with:
O H
From the Lamp on Summed up Conduct:
Divide the food into four parts.
First, offer pure food to the devas.
After that, to the dharmaplas and protectors

108

Offer elaborate torma.

Then, eat and drink.
Give the leftover, to all the bhtas.
In that way, or else, as is said in the Vinaya of the holy dharma, divide the food
into three parts. First, offer divine food to the gurus with:
O GURU-VAJRA-NAIVEDY H
Likewise, offer to the host of Buddha, and bodhisatvas with:
OM SARVA-BUDDHA-BODHISATVEBHYO VAJRA-NAIVEDY
H
Offer to the divine assembly of the maala of yidams with:
O KMA-DEVA-MAALA-NAIVEDY H
Offer to Majuhr and others whatever devata you desire for example:
O MAJUHR VAJRA-NAIVEDY H
Offer to the dharmaplas with:
O HR DHARMAPLA VAJRA-NAIVEDY H
Offer divine food to all the bhtas with:
O A-KRO MUKHA SARVA-DHARM
DYANUTPANNATVT O H PHA SVH
Give one pinch of food to Hrt with:
O HRTE SVH
And one pinch of food to the five hundred sons of Hrt with:
O HRTE MAHYAKHI HARA HARA
SARVARYAIKHI SVH
Give one pinch of food to the bhtas who are capable of receiving the select
portion with:
O AGRA-PIA-HIBHYA SVH
If one wishes to purify any poison or the like in the food, chant:
NAMA SARVA-BUDDHA-BODHISATVN
O BALI TE JVLA-BALI NI SVH
Repeat this eight times; pick up food with the thumb and ring fingers, and eat.
While eating, eat with an attitude that sees the food as impure, with an attitude
of non-attachment, with an attitude that benefits the masses of different
intestinal bacteria, and with an attitude of remaining on the ship that travels to
peace and enlightenment. Do not eat with an attitude that increases passion
and craving. In Entrance to the Bodhisatvas Conduct it is said, One
should eat moderately. The way of doing this is explained according to the
Ashtanga: Two quarters of the stomach are for food; one quarter is for

109

drink, and one quarter is left empty. Or else, according to the text Handbook
of Food: One should have two-thirds for food and drink, and leave one-third
empty.
Finally, give a pinch of food to the bhutas who are capable of receiving the
leftovers with:
O UCCHIHA-PIA-HIBHYA SVH
Then, wash the mouth. Then, purify the gift:
I prostrate to the bhagavat, tathgata, arhat, sayaksabuddha
Samantaprabharaja:
NAMA SAMANTAPRABHRJYA TATHGATYA
ARHATE SAYAKSABUDDHYA / NAMO MAJUHR
KUMRABHTYA BODHISATVYA MAHSATTVYA
MAHKRUNIKYA / TAD YATH / O NIRLAMBE
NIRBHASE JAYA JAYA LABHE MAHMATE DAKHE
DAKHII ME PARIHODHYA SVH
By saying this dharai even once, one completely purifies alms as vast as
Mount Meru. This dharai is taken from the Dulwa Nampar Ngepe Gyu.
Then, as is said in the gamas:
May the royal patron and likewise
The other sentient beings who are donors
Obtain long life, freedom from sickness, prosperity,
And the companionship of eternal bliss.
That and:
By this generosity one has power over the bhtas.
By this generosity one is free from enemies.
Generosity is the transcendent friend.
Therefore, generosity is said to be essential.
Generosity is the ornament of the world.
Through generosity, one turns back from the lower realms.
Generosity is the stairway to the higher realms.
Generosity is the virtue that produces peace.
The prosperity of the bodhisatvas
Is inexhaustible, filling the whole of space.
In order to obtain such prosperity,
Completely propagate that generosity.
Say those verses of dedication, aspiration, and generosity. Also, those who,
having the yoga of a deity, would like to make eating into the revelry of the
inner gaachakra, can use O H to make the food blaze forth as
oceans of cloudbanks of desirables the nature of amita then say,

110

HO
My body of skandhas, dhtus, and yatanas
In fact the complete three seats is
The deities of the maalas of the hundred holy families
Whose every movement is greater bliss
Playing in the unsurpassed vajra samaya
In a great cloud of bodhicitta
In the state of non-dualitys equality.
The path substances have been fulfilled with the yoga
So there will be no obscuration due to food;
Theres no particular sponsor here but
May they live in the fruition of the Great Vehicle.
Use the technique of offering with your skandhas, dhtus, and yatanas
visualized as the complete three seats to discard clinging to ordinary
appearances and enjoy yourself with satisfaction. Having done so, say this:
Having turned the wheel of feast
In the maala of the complete three seats
May I and others, all migrators without exception,
Gain accomplishment in the same maala.
(This comes from the Tr Essence, and is an inner feast offering of the Anuyoga system.)

To the Precious Buddha, teacher most supreme,

O All you [Tathagatas] and all the others, however many Tathagatas, the Foe
Destroyers, the Completely Perfect Buddhas, the World Honored Ones there
are dwelling and abiding in all the worldly realms of the ten directions, all you
Buddhas, the World Honored Ones, please listen to me.
In this life and in all my lives since beginning-less time, in all my places of
rebirth while wandering in samsara, I have done negative actions, have ordered
them to be done, and have rejoiced in their being done. I have stolen the
property of the bases of offering, the property of the Sangha, and the property
of the Sanghas of the ten directions, have ordered it to be stolen, and have
rejoiced in it being stolen. I have committed the five unbounded heinous
actions, have ordered them to be committed, and have rejoiced in their being
committed. I have completely engaged in the paths of the ten non-virtuous
actions, have ordered others to engage in them, and have rejoiced in their
engaging in them.
Being obstructed by such karmic obstructions, I shall become a hell being, or I
shall be born as an animal, or I shall go to the land of the hungry ghosts, or I

115

shall be born as a barbarian in an irreligious country, or I shall be born as a

long-life god, or I shall come to have incomplete senses, or I shall come to hold
wrong views, or I shall have no opportunity to please a Buddha.
All such karmic obstructions I declare in the presence of the Buddhas, the
World Honored Ones, who have become exalted wisdom, who have become
eyes, who have become witnesses, who have become valid, who see with their
wisdom. I confess without concealing or hiding anything, and from now on I
will avoid and refrain from such actions.
All you Buddhas, the World Honored Ones, please listen to me. In this life and
in all my previous lives since the beginning-less time, in all my places of
rebirth while wandering in samsara, whatever root of virtue there is in my
giving to others, even in my giving a morsel of food to one born as an animal;
whatever root of virtue there is in my maintaining moral discipline; whatever
root of virtue there is in my actions conducive to great liberation; whatever root
of virtue there is in my acting to fully ripen sentient beings; whatever root of
virtue there is in my generating a supreme mind of enlightenment; and
whatever root of virtue there is in my unsurpassed exalted wisdom; all of these
assembled, gathered, and collected together, by fully dedicating them to the
unsurpassed, to that of which there is no higher, to that which is even higher
than the high, and to that which surpasses the unsurpassed, I fully dedicate to
the unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment.
Just as the Buddhas, the World Honored Ones of the past, have dedicated fully,
just as the Buddhas, the World Honored Ones who are yet to come, will
dedicate fully, and just as the Buddhas, the World Honored Ones who are
living now, dedicate fully, so too do I dedicate fully.
I confess individually all negative actions. I rejoice in all merit. I beseech and
request all the Buddhas. May I attain the holy, supreme, unsurpassed, exalted
wisdom!
Whoever are the Conquerors, the supreme beings living now, those of the past,
and likewise those who are yet to come, with a boundle ss ocean of praise for
all your good qualities, and with my palms pressed together I go close to you
for refuge.

Heart Sutra
The Essence of the Perfection of Knowledge

117

118

In Sanskrit: bhagavati prajnaparamita hridaya

In Tibetan: chom den day ma shey rap kyee pa rol tu chin pey nying po
Thus, have I heard: At one time, the Bhagavan dwelt in Rajagriha at Vulture
Peak Mountain, together with a great sangha of fully ordained monks and a
great sangha of bodhisattvas? As the Bhagavan settled into an absorption on
the categories of phenomena called illumination of the profound, noble
Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva mahasattva, beheld the practice of the
profound perfection of knowledge and saw the five aggregates to be empty of
nature.
Then, through the power of the Buddha, venerable Shariputra addressed noble
Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva mahasattva: How should a son or daughter
of noble family who wishes to practice the profound perfection of knowledge
train?
In response, noble Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva mahasattva, said to
venerable Shariputra, O Shariputra, a son or daughter of noble family who
wishes to practice the profound perfection of knowledge should see clearly in
this way: correctly observing that the five aggregates are empty of nature.
Form is empty; emptiness also is form. There is no emptiness aside from form
and no form aside from emptiness. Just so, sensation, perception, formation,
and consciousness are emptiness.
O Shariputra, all dharmas are emptiness in just this way. There are no
characteristics. There is no birth and no cessation. There is neither impurity nor
absence of impurity. There is no increase and no decline.
O Shariputra, since this is the case, in emptiness there is no form, no sensation,
no perception, no formation, and no consciousness; no eyes, no ears, no nose,
no tongue, no body, and no mind; no forms, no sounds, no smells, no tastes, no
touch, and no phenomena; no eye element to no mind element, up to no mind

119

consciousness element; no ignorance and no end of ignorance, up to no old age

and death and no end of old age and death. In the same way, there is no
suffering, no source of suffering, no cessation of suffering, and no path; no
wisdom, no attainment and no non- attainment.
Therefore, Shariputra, since bodhisattvas have nothing to attain, they rely
upon and dwell in the perfection of knowledge. Since their minds are
unobscured, they have no fear. Transcending all forms of misconception, they
reach nirvana. All the Buddhas throughout the three times as well rely upon the
perfection of knowledge, and in so doing become perfect Buddhas, actualizing
unsurpassed, true, complete enlightenment.
Therefore, the mantra of the perfection of knowledge, the mantra of great
insight, the unsurpassed mantra, the mantra equal to that which has no equal,
the mantra that completely pacifies all suffering should be known as truth, for
it is not false.
The perfection of knowledge mantra is spoken thus:
TEYATA OM GAT GAT
PARAGAT PARASAMGAT BODHI SVAHA
Shariputra, a bodhisattva mahasattva should practice the profound perfection
of knowledge in this way.
The Bhagavan then arose from his absorption and said to noble
Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva mahasattva: Good, good, O son of noble
family! Thus it is, son of noble family, thus it is! The profound perfection of
knowledge should be practiced just as you have taught. In this, all the tatagatas
rejoice!
When the Bhagavan said this, venerable Shariputra and noble Avalokiteshvara,
the bodhisattva mahasattva, along with the entire retinue and the world with its
gods, humans, demi-gods, and gandharvas rejoiced and praised the words of
the Bhagavan.
This concludes the noble Essence of the Perfection of Knowledge.
If you wish to practice this sutra, visualize the Tatagata in the sky before you.
He holds the mudra that subdues mara and is surrounded by the members of
the Hinayana and Mahayana sanghas, including Avalokiteshvara and
Shariputra, who are engaged in discussion. As you contemplate the nature of
emptiness, recite this profound sutra as much as possible, up to seven times,
and repeat the vidya mantra a suitable number of times as well. Once you have
done so, recite the following lines to dispel negative forces:
I prostrate to the Buddha.
I prostrate to the Dharma.
I prostrate to the sangha.
I prostrate to the Great Mother, the Perfection of Knowledge.

120

In times past, the king of gods, Indra, pondered the profound nature of the
perfection of knowledge and chanted its liturgy. In this way, he dispelled all
negative, harmful forces and other factors that create discord.
Just so, by pondering the profound nature of the Great Mother, the perfection
of knowledge, and chanting this liturgy, may all negative, harmful forces and
other factors that create discord be dispelled! May they disappear! May they be
pacified! May they be thoroughly pacified!
Following that, recite:
That which arises interdependently
Does not cease and does not arise.
It is not nothing and not eternal.
It does not come and does not go.
It is not different and not the same.
To the one who teaches peace,
The pacification of all projections,
To the most sublime of all who speak:
To the perfect Buddha, I pay homage!
Conclude by dedicating the merit, making aspirations, and reciting auspicious
prayers.

May all conducive circumstances be accomplished, and May the

auspiciousness of perfect excellence,

TRA-SHE DE-KYANG DENG-DIR DE-LEG SHOG

occur here and now, and may all happiness and goodness occur!

This is a particularly powerful means for consummating our practice of the perfection of
generosity, and for pacifying obstacles. Anyone and everyone should practice this.
Especially, during the dark period, when sentient beings greed and desire are increasing;
when hungry ghosts and evil spirits are many, and when they are attacking humans and
livestock, and harming ones possessions and enjoyments; when deceased spirits are drifting
around driven solely by their desire for food and wealth; when there is much plague and
epidemic, and contagion to the livestock; when we have bad dreams; when we are
endangered by wild animals like wolves and so forth. Whenever there is a demonic attack or
suspicion of demonic influence, etc., if we can practice this fire puja, then all obstacles and
harm shall be pacified. If we regularly or occasionally practice this, imbued with the pure
motivation of compassion, we are guaranteed to reverse untimely death, be free from the
threat of illness, family curses, and contamination; we will increase positive conditions,
perfect our accumulations, and thus achieve immediate and ultimate benefit for self and
others. Since there are so many more advantages, it is not necessary to elaborate on them
all. Just practice whole-heartedly.
This was written by Miphampa in the cave of Gyadod Wangpuk on October, 18th, inspired
by a dream and the aspiration to benefit all sentient beings. May there be virtue! Monga
Lang!

location of the Land of Dharma, in front of Buddha Shakyamunis holy throne
solemnly adorned by the bodhi trees. May the blessings of Buddhas and
bodhisattvas accomplish all wishes? Disciple So Darge copied and edited from
the recording, who also aspired as such. How wonderful! The ninth month of
the Year of Iron Horse. (November 29th, 1990)
Note: The four classes of treasure refers to wealth, pleasure, supreme
Dharma, and liberation. The former two are the cause and result of mundane
happiness, while the latter two are that of ultimate happiness.

The Oral Transmission that Delights the Dharma Kings:
A Prayer of Aspiration for the Increase of
the Teachings of Early Translation School
By Mipham Rinpoche

The aspiration prayer, entitled The Oral Transmission that Delights the Dharma Kings, is
a prayer for the teachings of the Early Translation School to flourish. Now, in these final
days, one is endowed with immeasurable merit by invoking the mindstreams of the deities of
the Three Roots and developing enlightened intent even once, thinking May the precious
essence of the teachings flourish! Completely perfecting the aspiration prayers made by
the heirs of Victorious Ones, in all rebirths one will meet with the teachings of Victorious
Ones and the essence of those teachings. By holding to, protecting and propagating that
essence, one will swiftly experience omniscient timeless awareness. This is particularly
necessary on special occasions, notably when large groups gather, so fortunate people
should formulate a prayer of aspiration in the following way.

NAMO

Homage!

The early translation school, known as Nyingma, constitutes the teachings of the Victorious
Onee born in the lake of the immortality within a lotus, the glorious Buddha Padma, the
essence of all Victorious Ones. Since it is foremost among the complete range of the
teachings of Victorious Ones, it has many great and profound key points, and its totally pure
view and meditation make it the most sublime of the noble paths that delight Victorious
Ones. Recognizing this, fortunate individualsas though polishing a precious jewel and
honoring it by placing it on top of a victory bannershould engage in powerful blessing of
enlightened activity, explaining, debating and commenting on these teachings. With this,
they accept the task of causing them to flourish and increase in every direction. In order to
provide an auspicious condition for their task to be accomplished according to their wishes,
I, Mipham Jamyang Namgyal Gyatso, have written these words of aspiration. With a
completely sincere and altruistic concern for the Nyingma teachings, I have written down
whatever came to mind during my midday meditation session in a virtuous place and at a
virtuous time. May virtue and excellence flourish! Magalam! Good fortune!

1. This could refer to the generation and completion phases, or to the conceptual phase of
yogic practices related to the subtle channels, inner air and essences and the nonconceptual phase of the actual nature of clear light. It could also refer to the two stages of
Dzogchen practice, tgal, the stage with appearances, and trekch, the stage without
appearances. See Lagla Snam Chdrup, Collected Works, volume 3, page 366.
2. The four levels of a vidydhara are: fully matured vidydhara, vidydhara with power
over life, mahmudr vidydhara and spontaneously accomplished vidydhara. According
to Lagla Snam Chdrup the first two correspond to the path of seeing, the third to the path
of meditation and the fourth to the path of no-more-learning.
3. The three lineages (Tib. gysum) are: the mind transmission of the Buddhas, the sign
transmission of the vidydharas, and the oral transmission of realized beings.

Eight Verses of Training The Mind

By Kadampa Geshe Langri Tangpa 1054 1123

With a determination to achieve the highest aim

For the benefit of all sentient beings
Which surpasses even the wish-fulfilling gem,
May I hold them dear at all times.
Whenever I interact with someone,
May I view myself as the lowest amongst all,
And, from the very depths of my heart,
Respectfully hold others as superior.
In all my deeds may I probe into my mind,
And as soon as mental and emotional afflictions ariseAs they endanger myself and othersMay I strongly confront them and avert them.
When I see beings of unpleasant character
Oppressed by strong negativity and suffering,
May I hold them dear-for they are rare to findAs if I have discovered a jewel treasure!
When others, out of jealousy
Treat me wrongly with abuse, slander, and scorn,
May I take upon myself the defeat
And offer to others the victory.
When someone whom I have helped,
Or in whom I have placed great hopes,
Mistreats me in extremely hurtful ways,
May I regard him still as my precious teacher.
In brief, may I offer benefit and joy
To all my mothers, both directly and indirectly,
May I quietly take upon myself
All hurts and pains of my mothers.
May all this remain undefiled
By the stains of the eight mundane concerns;
And may I, recognizing all things as illusion,
Devoid of clinging, be released from bondage.

The Thirty-Seven Practices of Bodhisattvas

By Nglchu Thogme Zangpo
First Practice

The possession of this human base, this precious vessel so difficult to

obtain, in order to liberate others and ourselves from the ocean of
samsara, allows us to hear, reflect, and meditate day and night
without distractions. This is the practice of the bodhisattva.
Second Practice

Towards our friends and those we love run the waters of attachment,
towards our enemies burns the fire of aversion; in the obscurity of
ignorance, we lose sight of what should be abandoned and what
should be practised. Therefore, renunciation of ones country and
home is a practice of the bodhisattva.
Third Practice

When we abandon our harmful surroundings, our illusions diminish,

and because we have no distractions our practice of virtue develops
spontaneously, leaving us with a clear mind, our trust in the Dharma
grows. To live in solitude is a practice of the bodhisattva.
Fourth Practice

One day old and dear friends will separate, goods and riches obtained
by great effort will be left behind. Consciousness, a guest of the body,
this temporary dwelling, will depart. From this moment on, to
renounce all attachment to this life is a practice of the bodhisattva.
Fifth Practice

If we have harmful companions, the three poisons are increased, our

reflection and meditation becomes degraded; love and compassion
are destroyed. To abandon dangerous company is a practice of the
bodhisattva.
Sixth Practice

To rely on a spiritual friend who has eliminated all illusions, whose

competence in the teachings and practice is complete, and whose
qualities increase like the crescent moon; to cherish this perfect guru
more than ones own body is a practice of the bodhisattva.
Seventh Practice

How could the gods of this would possibly liberate us, being
themselves tied to the prison of samsara? Instead let us take refuge in
that on which we can rely. To take refuge in the Three Jewels is a
practice of the bodhisattva.
202

Eighth Practice

The intolerable suffering of the lower realms is said by the Buddha to

be the fruit of karma, therefore never to commit unwise deeds is a
practice of the bodhisattva.
Ninth Practice

The happiness of the three worlds is like the dew on the tip of a blade
of grass, disappearing in an instant. To aspire to supreme, immutable
liberation is a practice of the bodhisattva.
Tenth Practice

Since beginningless time, our mothers took care of us with

tenderness. What use is our own happiness when they still suffer? To
generate bodhichitta in order to liberate infinite beings is a practice
of the bodhisattva.
Eleventh Practice

All suffering, without exception, comes from the desire for happiness
for oneself, while perfect buddahood is born from the desire to make
others happy. This is why completely exchanging ones happiness
for that of others is a practice of the bodhisattva.
Twelfth Practice

If, in the grip of violent desire or cruel necessity, an unfortunate

person steals our possessions or incites someone else to steal them, to
be full of compassion, to dedicate to this person or body, possessions,
and past, present and future merit, is a practice of the bodhisattva.
Thirteenth Practice

Even if we are beaten or tortured, we must not allow any aversion to

arise within us. To have great compassion for those poor beings who,
out of ignorance, mistreat us is a practice of the bodhisattva.
Fourteenth Practice

If, without reason, certain people slander us to the point where the
entire world is filled with their malicious gossip, to praise their
virtues lovingly is a practice of the bodhisattva.
Fifteenth Practice

If in the company of several people, one among them reveals a fault

that we would have liked hidden, not to become irritated with the one
who treats us in this manner but to consider him as a supreme guru is
a practice of the bodhisattva.

203

Sixteenth Practice

If someone whom we have helped and protected as our own child

show only ingratitude and dislike in return, to have towards this
person the tender pity a mother has for her sick child is a practice of
the bodhisattva.
Seventeenth Practice

If someone who is your equal or someone who is obviously your

inferior despises you or out of arrogance attempts to debase you, to
respect him as your master is a practice of the bodhisattva.
Eighteenth Practice

When we are abandoned, overcome with sickness and worry, not to

become discouraged but to think of taking on all the wrongful actions
committed by others and suffering their consequences is a practice of
the bodhisattva.
Nineteenth Practice

When we enjoy a good reputation and the respect of everyone, the

wealth of Vaishravana, to see that the fruits of karma are without
substance and not to take pride in this observation is a practice of the
bodhisattva.
Twentieth Practice

Unless the aggression of our inner adversaries ceases, the more we

fight them the more they multiply. Similarly, until we have mastered
our own mind, negative forces will invade us. To discipline the mind
through love and compassion is a practice of the bodhisattva.
Twenty-first Practice

The nature of sense pleasures is like that of saltwater: the more we

drink, the more our thirst increases. To abandon the objects towards
which desire arises is a practice of the bodhisattva.
Twenty-second Practice

All that appears comes from an illusion of the mind and the mind
itself is from beginningless time without inherent existence, free
from the two extremes of manifestation (eternalism and nihilism) and
beyond all elaboration. To understand this nature (Tathata) and not to
conceive of subjects and objects as really existing is a practice of the
bodhisattva.

204

Twenty-third Practice

When we encounter an attractive object, or something that pleases

our mind, we see it as beautiful and real, but actually it is empty as a
summer rainbow. To abandon attachment towards it is a practice of
the bodhisattva.
Twenty-Fourth Practice

Various sufferings are like those experienced from the death of an

only child in a dream. To take as truth that which is only a false
appearance is uselessly to exhaust the body and mind. When we meet
with unfavourable circumstances, to approach them thinking they are
only illusion is a practice of the bodhisattva.
Twenty-fifth Practice

If he who desires awakening must sacrifice his own body, his

precious human life, what need is there to mention external objects to
abandon? This is why practising generosity without hoping for a
reward or a karmic fruit is a practice of the bodhisattva.
Twenty-sixth Practice

If, lacking ethical discipline, we cannot realise our own intentions, to

want to fulfil the vows of other beings is simply a joke. To keep rules
and vows, not for a temporal and samsaric goal but in order to help
all sentient beings, is a practice of the bodhisattva.
Twenty-seventh Practice

For a Son (or Daughter) of the Buddha who desires the rewards of
virtuous merit, all adverse circumstances are a precious treasure for
they require the practice of kshanti (patience). To be perfectly patient,
without irritation or resentment towards anyone, is a practice of the
bodhisattva.
Twenty-eighth Practice

Even the Pratyekabuddhas and the Shravakas who are concerned

only with their own liberation make great efforts to obtain virya
(energy). To perfectly practise energy, the source of all qualities for
the benefit of all beings, is a practice of the bodhisattva.
Twenty-ninth Practice

In understanding that vipashyana in union with shamatha completely

destroys kleshas (desires, obstacles), to meditate on the dhyanas
which are beyond the four realms is a practice of the bodhisattva.

205

Thirtieth Practice

Without prajna, the five preceding virtues cannot be called paramita

(excellent, perfect) and are incapable of leading us to Buddhahood.
To have the right view which perceives that the one who acts, the act,
and the one for whom we act completely lack inherent existence is a
practice of the bodhisattva.
Thirty-first Practice

Not to analyse our actions and feelings allows desire to arise. To

examine our errors and faults in order to separate ourselves from
them completely is a practice of the bodhisattva.
Thirty-second Practice

Never to criticise others or speak of the errors that those who are on
the path of the Mahayana may have committed is a practice is a
practice of the bodhisattva.
Thirty-third Practice

In order to receive offerings and be surrounded by respect, we fight

among ourselves in a spirit of competition to the detriment of our
attention towards study; our meditation slackens. To abandon all
attachment to the gifts of those who care for us is a practice of the
bodhisattva.
Thirty-fourth Practice

Harsh speech disturbs the mind of others, and our practice feels the
effects of this. To abandon all coarse and vulgar language, all harsh
speech and all idle chatter is a practice of the bodhisattva.
Thirty-fifth Practice

As we are accustomed to acting under the rule of our passions,

destroying them demands great effort. Mindfulness of these
(opposing forces) is the weapon that allows us to repel them
immediately. In short: whatever we do, in whatever circumstance or
conditions, always to be attentive to the situation that presents itself
and to the reaction that it awakens in our mind; this, with the
motivation of amending our behaviour for the well-being of all
sentient beings, is a practice of the bodhisattva.
Thirty-sixth Practice

To dedicate the merit that results from our efforts to obtain

Buddhahood, towards illumination through the wisdom of the view
of emptiness of the three realms of action and in order to overcome
the suffering of infinite beings, is a practice of the bodhisattva.
206

Thirty-seventh Practice

The thirty-seventh practice is the explication given by Lama Thogsmed bsang-po of his work and his dedication of it.
Basing myself in the teachings of the Sutra, the Tantra and the
Shastra, I have grouped these Thirty-seven Practices of the Sons of
the Buddha for usage and for the benefit of those who would like to
follow their path.
Because of my limited understanding and my inadequate knowledge,
this composition lacks the poetry and elegance of the language that
the scholars revived, but as these teachings depend strictly on the
Sutra of the Supreme, I think that they reveal the practices of the
bodhisattva free of errors.
However, the immense course of action of the bodhisattvas is
difficult for someone of my level of ignorance to understand and
realise; I ask also of the Supreme Ones to practise patience towards
me and to pardon my imprecision and whatever contradictions and
inconsistencies may have crept into this text.
By the merit that I have obtained through this effort, as well as
through the power of the two Bodhicittas, the relative and the
ultimate, may all sentient beings, without remaining within the limits
of samsara and nirvana, become like Avalokiteshvara.

The Three Principal Aspects of The Path

By Je Tsongkhapa

Homage to the most venerable teachers!

I shall explain here to the best of my ability:
The essential points of all the scriptures of the Conqueror;
The path acclaimed by all excellent bodhisattvas;
The gateway for the fortunate ones aspiring for liberation.
Those who are not attached to the joys of cyclic existence,
Who strive to make meaningful this life of leisure and apportunity,
And who place their trust in the path that pleases the Conquerors O fortunate ones, listen with an open heart.
Without pure renunciation there is no means to pacify
The yearning for the joys and fruits of samsaric ocean;
And as craving for existence chain us thoroughly,
At first search for a true renunciation.
By cultivating in mind that this human life is so hard to find
Yet has no time to spare, preoccupations with this life will cease;
By contemplating repeatedly the truth of karma and samsaric suffering,
Preoccupations with next life will come to cease.
As you habituate in this way and when not even an instant
Of admiration arises for the prosperities of cyclic existence,
And when the thought aspiring for liberation arises day and night,
At this point true renunciation has arisen.
Such renunciation too if it is not sustained
By pure awakening mind it will not become a cause
Of the perfect bliss of unexcelled enlightenment;
Therefore O intelligent ones, generate the excellent awakening mind.
Theyre being swept away constantly by four powerful rivers;
Theyre bound tightly with fetters of karma most difficult to escape;
Theyre trapped inside the iron mesh of self-grasping;
Theyre enveloped from everywhere by thick mists of ignorance;
They take birth within cyclic existence that has no end,
Where theyre endlessly tormented by the three sufferings.
By reflecting on all your mothers who suffer such conditions,
Please generate the supreme awakening mind.

208

If you do not have the wisdom realising the ultimate nature,

Even if you gain familiarity with renunciation and awakening mind,
You will not be able to cut the root of samsaric existence;
So strive in the means of realizing dependent origination.
When with respect to all phenomena of samsara and nirvana,
You see that cause and effects never deceive their laws,
And when you have dismantled the focus of objectification,
At that point you have entered the path that pleases the Buddhas.
So long as the two understandings of appearance,
Which is undeceiving dependent origination,
And emptiness devoid of all theses remain separate,
So long you have not realized the intent of the Sage.
However at some point when, without alternation but at once,
The instant you see that dependent origination is undeceiving,
If the entire object of grasping at certitude is dismantled,
At that point your analysis of the view has culminated.
Furthermore when appearance dispels the extreme of existence,
And when emptiness dispels the extreme of non-existence,
And if you understand how emptiness arises as cause and effect,
You will never be captivated by views grasping at extremes.
Thus when you have understood as they are
The essentials of the three principal aspects of the path,
O son, seek solitude and by enhancing the power of perseverance,
Swiftly accomplish your ultimate aspiration.
This advice was given by the monk Lobsang Drakpai Pal to Ngawang Drakpa, a leading
person of Tsakho region.
