Lesson Plan #4: Phonics

Word work & The World of Dinosaurs

Objectives:
1) Students will use word wall to chant and write sentences.
2) Students will connect the sounds of blends th, ch, ph and sh with the letters
through the target activity.
3) Students will search for blends th, ch, ph and sh in the book The World of
Dinosaurs by Melvin Berger.
4) Students will take turns reading sentences from the book The World of Dinosaurs that use
the blends we are covering.
5) Students will explain what they learned and what they wonder on every other page.
6) Students will match the dinosaur to their skeleton and color the pictures after the reading.

Activities/Outline:

Ask about day/good news. (3 min)

Work on running records (B & A) and have the other color while they wait. (not a part of the

phonics lesson plan)

Work with group word wall. Have students repeat words and write them in a sentence on
lined paper. Have them read each other's sentences by themselves. (10 min)

Phonics/ Target activity: Students will move to hallway where they will toss a bean animal
to the matching paper that has a blend or letter (th, t, sh, s, ph, p, ch, c), when they are given
the sound. They get three tries to land on it. If they do not land on it, they skip up to the
board and touch it. After they have touched it, or landed on it with the bean animal, they
must make a word that uses those sounds. I will then write their word on a white board.
Each word that they make, they get a point. Both students work together to get as many
points as they can. There is no reward besides having fun learning. (20 min)

Begin to look over book: talk pictures over. (2 min)

Read The World of Dinosaurss: Every other page ask what they learned and what they
wonder. Write their answer down on sticky notes so that they see their answers are
contributing. Ask them to read some sentences to themselves (or whisper it), then we will
read them with the group. (15 min)

Have students work on dinosaur work sheet after book. They will match the skeleton with
the dinosaur picture to see if they understand that the skeletons help us today know what
they dinosaurs look like. They may color the page if there is time. While they are coloring,
ask them how we know what dinosaurs look like today and how they knew which one to
match to. (10 min)

Materials:
1) A pencil for each
2) Lined paper (for writing their sentences with word wall)
3) Blends and letters on a board (spaced out enough for a bean bag to be tossed on just that
letter or blend)

4) Bean bags or bean animals

6) sticky notes
7) Dinosaur comprehension work sheet
Assessments:

Students use words from word wall appropriately in sentences.

Students appropriately match the sound with letters and blends on the homemade board
during the target game.

Students accurately make words with the sounds they land on.

Students will state main ideas of what they have learned from the book on each page with a
sticky note.

Students correctly connect the dinosaur to its skeleton.

Students are able to explain how scientists know what dinosaurs look like using their
skeleton sheet (because they found their bones/skeletons).

Builds off previous lesson:


1) Last week, our book about frogs what a huge hit! Jason loved learning about a real
animal! I decided to go with the sam author, but this time it is about Dinosaurs. It
still has large pictures and large words in simple sentences. I will read all the of the
dinosaurs names so they will not get discouraged, but I will have them repeat the
names.
2) I'm going to use sticky notes yet again, because last time it encouraged them to
answer when they saw that I was acknowledging it by writing it down.
3) I'm going to use a matching work sheet with coloring, because dinosaur names are
hard. They will be able to see using the picture matching, and after reading the book,
that dinosaurs lived a long time ago, but we can know what they look like by digging
up their bones.
4) My students are always on the move. I will use movement in my target activity
with phonics send the sound and letter connections to long-term memory by adding
the sensory of movement.
5) This book has some sentences at C level, but most not (including the names of the
dinosaurs). I will read most of the book, until I come across the blends we were
working on, or very simple sentences. They still need the picture support and large
lettering, so I chose a large book with big pictures and large lettering. (because they
are still emergent readers and the large book engaged my learner last week).

Balances: First I will do some more work with running records. They will coloring while
waiting. Word work is through the phonics game. Guided reading through the book: Leaping Frogs.
They read some sentences out loud (to our small group) and I also had them read a page to
themselves before I read it with them at the same time aloud (read to self). They wrote sentences
using the word wall. They also worked by themselves connecting the three dinosaurs with their
skeletons and coloring them.

Notes/Tips:
1) Prepare ahead of time (bring all materials & go over plan so you do not have to look at this
sheet often).
2) Make expectations clear for each activity.
3) Be excited! The students won't be excited if you as the teacher are not.
