Americans spent on average 7.6 hours a month on social media through their cell phones
(Whiteman). Moreover, sixty-three percent of American Facebook users log on social media
every day, and forty percent of users log on several times a day (Paddock). Dr. Shannon M.
Rauch, an assistant professor of psychology of Benedictine University at Mesa, said "For those
who post status updates, the reinforcements keep coming in the form of supportive comments
and 'likes.' And of course we know that behaviors that are consistently reinforced will be
repeated, so it becomes hard for a person who has developed this habit to simply stop"
(Whiteman). This can lead to social media addiction. According to Meikle, a special
correspondent for the Guardian, researchers who tried to evaluate how people could resist their
desire to log on said social media is harder to give up than cigarettes and alcohol. Constant use of
social media interrupts peoples lives. People should control using social media because social
media addiction can cause people feel anxious and think that they are unimportant.
People are easily addicted to social media, and it affects peoples feeling of anxiety and
insufficiency by themselves. An experiment, which measure the willpower of 205 participants
aged between 18 and 85 conducted by Wilhelm Hofmann, an assistant professor of behavioral
science at the University of Chicago Booth Business School, showed the participants were sent
messages over fourteen hours for seven constant days (Meikle). Ten thousand five hundred fifty-

eight participants responded and seven thousand eight hundred twenty-eight enjoyed the
experience (Meikle). Hofmann illustrated Desires for media may be comparatively harder to
resist because of their high availability and also because it feels like it does not cost much to
engage in these activities, even though one wants to resist (Meikle). As a result, social media is
easy to access and people can become addict before people are aware of it. According to a study
by the charity Anxiety UK, More than half (fifty-three percent) of the respondents said usage of
social media sites had changed their behavior, with half (fifty-one percent) of those saying the
impact had been negative (Paddock). Besides, they claimed their lives were gotten worse by
social media and felt less confident after comparing their accomplishments against their online
friends (Paddock). People who got high scores in a psychological scale devoted to measuring
addiction to Facebook said they feel more on edge and insecure than other people. Dr. Cecilie
Andraessen, a postdoctoral researcher of Department of Psychosocial Science from the
University of Bergen, said We have also found that people who are anxious and socially
insecure use Facebook more than those with lower scores on those traits, probably because those
who are anxious find it easier to communicate via social media than face-to-face (Paddock).
Through this experiment, social media addiction leads to problems not only about peoples lives
but also their feelings and self-control.
To solve the matter of social media addiction, there are eight steps for self-management.
First step is track your time online. This is the simplest and easiest way to make sure that people
do not waste time. Using a stopwatch can help people. If people see that they are on social media
too much, they can set a limit for themselves (Husain). Second step is calling people. This way
looks like so old fashion, but it helps human interaction because people are losing touch
(Husain). Third step is go outside instead of inside and take a break from social media.

Refreshing peoples mind might aid to forget social media for a while (Husain). Fourth step is
limit peoples accounts on social media. People should reduce their accounts on social media
sites. People have more than 2 accounts, it takes up more of their time less than 2 accounts
(Husain). Fifth step is limit amount of friends on social media. If people use social media to
share and interact with people with similar interests rather than people follow anyone only for
popularity (Husain). Sixth step is prioritize. People should only use social media after they finish
their work or during down time (Husain). Seventh step is remove the cellphone apps. Cellphone
apps interrupt people because people can easily access social media any time. People can save
time if they use social media only one place, such as on the desk, with limited time (Husain).
Last step is spend more time with close friends and family. If people interact with their friends
and family, it helps peoples relationships and keeps them away from social media instead of
spending numerous time in social media (Husain).
Social media addiction has become a serious issue because it is strongly addictive, and
causes negative feelings like anxiety and low self-esteem. People unconsciously use social media
all day. People should be aware of the risks of social media addiction. They need to manage and
control their social media in their lives, following eight steps. If they do not take about social
media addiction solemnly, it may become enormous problems in their lives.
