2. a) Define the terms specific weight, specific gravity, surface tension and viscosity. Mention their units.

b) A flat plate of 1.5 x 10 cm area is pulled with speed of 0.4 m/s relative to another plate located at a
distance of 0.15 mm from it. Find the force and power required to maintain this speed, if the fluid
separating them is having dynamic viscosity of 1 poise.

3. a) Discuss the different types of manometers and mechanical pressure gauges?

b) A triangular plate of 2 m base and 2.5 m altitude is immersed in water with the base parallel to water
surface and at a depth of 3 m from free surface. Find the total force on the plate and position of its
action.

4. a) Explain the terms metacentre and metacentric height. Derive an expression for the metacentric height of
a floating body.

b) An open cylindrical tank of 200 mm diameter and 1 m long contains water up to a height of 0.6 m. The
tank is rotated about its vertical at 300 r.p.m. Determine the depth of parabola formed at free surface of
water.

5. a) Derive the three dimensional continuity equation for steady incompressible fluid flow.

b) A velocity potential function for the two dimensional steady state flow is given by
= x (2y 1).
Find out the velocity at the point P (2, 3). Also find out the value of stream function passing through the
point P.

6. a) Differentiate between small orifice and large orifice. Obtain an expression for discharge through large
rectangular orifice.

b) A pipe of 30 cm diameter is carrying 0.25 m3/s water. The pipe is bent by 135o from the horizontal
anticlockwise. The pressure of water flowing through the pipe is 400 kN/m 2. Find the magnitude and
direction of the resultant force on the bend.

7. a) Derive an expression for loss of head due to friction in pipe flow.
b) How would you distinguish between hydrodynamically smooth and rough boundaries?
