Phonics

Phonemic
Awareness
Phonemic awareness is
the ability to recognize
and manipulate sounds
in spoken words by
orally blending,
segmenting, adding,
and deleting them.
This is one of the five
components of reading.
One activity that we
will be doing in class, in
order to practice
phonemic awareness,
is using syllable cards.
These cards have a
word and picture at the
top, and numbers one
through four on the
bottom. The students
have to say the word
and clap out the
syllables, and then put
a clothes pin on the
number of syllables at
the bottom of the card.

One activity that we will be doing
in class, in order to practice
phonics, is a word puzzle activity.
This activity has cards with a word
and matching picture that have
been cut into strips with one letter
per strip. The students have to
match the letters up to form the
word, if they have the correct word
then the picture will be whole
again.

Vocabulary

Vocabulary is the
understanding of word
meanings and how words
are used in text. This is
one of the five reading
components.
One activity that we will be
doing in class, in order to
practice vocabulary, is
doing activity worksheets
that help students become
familiar with sight words.
Depending on the
worksheet, there are
different sight words and
different tasks that the
student is asked to do.

Fluency

Fluency is the ability to perform

reading skills such as naming
letters, reading words, and
reading connected text quickly,
smoothly, and automatically.
This is one of the five
components of reading.

One activity that we will be

doing in class, in order to
practice fluency, is practicing
short and long vowel word
families. During this activity, the
student see how many words in
the word family they can read in
a given amount of time.

Comprehension
Comprehension is the ability to
understand and draw meaning from
spoken and written language. This is
one of the five reading components.

One activity that we will be doing

in class, in order to practice
comprehension, is doing a beach
ball toss with comprehension
questions written on them. After
reading a story as a whole class,
the students will then toss a beach
ball to each other and answer the
question that their thumb lands
on.
