Special Cross-Cultural Considerations for ESOLs: Teacher will access students prior
knowledge in order to review or move towards grade-level vocabulary.
Some students may have either experienced or have knowledge of earthquakes and may
describe their experiences to make connections between other natural disasters and
volcanoes.

Lesson Sequence (This may be adjusted as necessary to accommodate unique lesson plan
features)

MOTIVATION: (Describe how you will build background and the specific strategies that you will
use to ensure the participation of ESOLs.)
Teacher will demonstrate a short video clip of the eruption of Mount St. Helen
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3zHgwiOK3oU (from 4:05 6:51)
After video has concluded, teacher will ask students to describe what they saw and whey they
think it occurred. Teacher will note their feedback on a web centered: Mount St. Helens
Eruption
PRESENTATION: (Describe the specific techniques you will use to make your presentation of
new material comprehensible to ESOLs, to provide opportunities for interaction through
appropriate questioning, and to assess whether or not ESOLs are getting it.)
If the class is mostly made up of Spanish speaking students, teacher will first introduce
vocabulary words that are cognates. For example: volcano volcn, eruption erupcin, etc.
If the classroom consists of multiple languages, teacher will introduce the most important
vocabulary first: vocano, magma, lava, eruption, active, dormant, extinct, plates, etc.
PRACTICE/APPLICATION: (Describe the activities you will use to allow for meaningful interaction
and practice using ALL language skills, the strategies you will use to ensure full participation
by ESOLs, and the techniques you will use to assess their success in the activities.)
Teacher will expose students to a brief video summary of Why Volcanoes Erupt. Teacher will
read what is being said in the video and images. Because the words in the video are being
slowly displayed, it will allow the teacher to read the words at a slower pace.
Teacher will then pair students in groups of two to participate in a Think-Pair-Share activity with
their peer. Teacher will give each pair of students 3 minutes to share what theyve learned.
Teacher will then ask random students to share what they have discussed with their partner.
Teacher will then hand out a reading with images of Mount St. Helen as well as a written
summary of it.

Teacher will then inform students that they will now have the opportunity to show a volcano
erupting. This may be an activity they could work on at school or at home. Students may
draw, paint, sketch, or create a volcano erupting. Students will then be able to discuss their
work with their peers and display their work in class.
EXTENSION: (Describe additional follow-up activities you will use with ESOLs to address any
areas that you deem need further explanation or practice to ensure their mastery of the
content and language objectives.)
Teacher may engage students in a game that enables them to define/ describe vocabulary
words learned. Materials: Vocabulary words with images, two hats
Procedure: Each student from a group will have the opportunity to wear the cab in front of
their class and place a vocabulary word above the hat. Their team members have to get the
person wearing the hat to guess the word. For example, if one of my team members was

wearing the hat and the word above their hat was magma, I would say Its a hot fluid that
later becomes lava.
The team with the most vocabulary guessed, wins.
