Itisnormal,forparentstobeconcernedfortheirkids,butsometimesdotheytakeittoo
far?Isperhaps,goingtoyourchild'sfirstjobintervieworaddingalloftheirfriendsonsocial
mediatoofar(Harris,M)(Bernstein)?

ThisIaskyou,toquestion.

Thereisatermbrandedtothesekindofparents:helicopterparents.Thenamemaysoundweird
butitimpliestheconstanthovering,andnaggingfromtheparents,muchlikethatannoyingfly
thatwontleaveyoualone.Helicopterparentshelptheirkidsthroughoutschool,butrecentlythis
hastakenanotherhugestep.Asparentsreentertheworkworld,everythingchanges.Helping
withsomehomeworkisonething,butwork,orevencollege(Oglesby)?That'sabittoomuch.

Howevernotallhelicopterparentsarethisextreme.Mostjustbugtheirkidstodotheir
homework,ortoturninamissingassignment.Butthiscanalsobetakentotheextreme.
Sometimesparentswillconstantlychecktheirchildren'sgrades.Sometimestheybugthemtofix
them.Sometimesthechildhasnocontroloverwhenthenexttestisandmayevenbestruggling
intheclass.Parentsmaybewantingthebest,butthatisntalwaystheoutcome.Addingstressto

analreadystressfulenvironment,makinghomenolongeraplacetorelax.Thisstressthencan
becomeacatalystformanyamplifyinganalreadyapparentproblemtothestudentandmakingit
evenworse.Kidsbegintoloseselfesteemmakingitevenhardertoimproveintheclass.

Howcouldsomethingmeanttohelpcausesomuchharm?

Becauseinmostsituations,parentsintendtohelptheirchildandseeitasnothingelse.They
mightsayintheirhead,Oh,Imjusttryingtohelpout!whereinfactitsdoingtheopposite.

Afewofyoumaybeaskingbynow,Whatcanwedo?Itisjusttheirinstinctafterall.

Whilethatmaybetrueitisalsonecessaryforparentstoaskthemselvesiftheyareinfact
helping,ratherthanhurting.Afewsimplequestionshouldbeaskedtooneselfafteraskingabout
grades:DoesmykidbecomeupsetoremotionallychargedafterIask?andThereisntany
improvementaftermyconstantquestions,amImakingitharder?orevenaskthemyourself.

Itmayseemasaminorproblemforthoseofyouwhohavenoexperiencewithit,butforthose
whodo,manycandirectlyrelatetothethingsIvejustsaid.

Butnow,letsswitchtoaresultofthosebadgrades:punishment.

Manyofusheardoftheclicheofgettingyourphonetakenaway,anditevenhappensatour
school.ButtheoneIwanttofocusonistakingawayaphoneorgameathome.AsIpreviously
statedkidsoftenbeatthemselvesupafterabadtestorabadgradeinaclass,addthatontopof
yourparentsbeingdisappointed,anditsintensified.Mostkidswillturntoagame,ortheir
phonestoavoidtheconstantpressure,tryingtoforgettheenormousamountofstressontheir
back,oftenventingtootherfriendsabouthow,IwishIhadyourparents,orMyparentsare
theworst.Weofcoursedontmeanthisandarejustabitfiredupoverourselves.

Butwhatcanhappenifyoutakeawaythatvent?

Theheateruptseverywhere.Youmaymakeasnideremarktoaparent,orbecomeentirely
depressedandunabletoworkonimprovingthatgrade.Kidsmaysaysomethingtheydontmean
atalltotheirparents,butitsparksafuse,andexplodesoutofcontrol.

Manythingscanbedonetostopit,butnotmanyare.Aresultmaybefurtherpunishment,
resultinginatornfamily.Allbecauseofabadgradeinasingleclass,andacataclysmicchainof
eventsthatledtounwantedhate,andthatiswhy,parentsshouldmakesuretheyknowabout
something,beforetheytalkabout,andconsiderwhatyourchildmaybegoingthrough,andifthe
bestdecisionistoscoldthem,ratherthanhelpthemwiththeproblembysettingupaplan.

Notallissuescanbestopped.Butifyouactbeforeyouthink,thinknowbeforeyouactonthe
issue.
