A Christmas Carol

Meadowbrook Theaters production of A Christmas Carol was an excellent

representation of the book by Charles Dickens. The play was similar and different from the
book. Dialogue, special effects, and deleted/added scenes are three aspects that have similarities
and differences. Although most of my expectations were met, there were also some that were
not. Most of my expectations were in the play because they were an important, significant part
of the story. Most of my predictions for Meadowbrook Theaters production of A Christmas
Carol were correct while others were not.
The first aspect from Meadowbrook Theaters production of A Christmas Carol, is
dialogue. One piece of dialogue from A Christmas Carol that I expected to be said in the play, is
when Scrooge constantly said Bah, Humbug in the beginning of the book. My expectations
were right because Scrooge did say Bah, Humbug in the play. This was kept in the play
because it is a very significant piece of dialogue in the book. Scrooge says Bah, Humbug
many times in the book when he is angry or annoyed. Its a line that shows what a grumpy
person he is. Another piece of dialogue from A Christmas Carol that I expected to be said in the
play, is Is there no prisons? Are there no workhouses?. (pg 9) My expectations were correct
because this was said in the play. This was kept in the play because the quote was a way of
haunting Scrooge with his own words. This quote was a way of showing Scrooge the terrible
personality he used to have. The last piece of dialogue from A Christmas Carol that I expected
to be be in the play, is I am not the man I was. I will honor Christmas. (pg 110) My

expectations were accurate because that line was said in the play. The quote was kept in the play
because it showed the audience how much Scrooge changed, and how much he wanted to
change. Dialogue is one aspect from Meadowbrook Theaters production of A Christmas Carol.
The second aspect from Meadowbrook Theaters production of A Christmas Carol, is
special effects. One special effect I thought would be in the play, was the chains around
Marleys ghost. My thoughts were right because in the play, Marleys ghost did wear chains
around him. Marleys ghost wore the chains in the play because the chains are a very significant
part of the character. The chains are important because they are described as the chains Marley
forged in life. Another special effect that I expected to be in the play, is Marleys face shown in
the door handle. My expectations were incorrect because this was not shown in play. This was
not shown in the play because further on in the play, Marley was going to be shown as a ghost.
Another reason is the audience could not see the door or the door handle that Scrooge walked
through. The final special effect I expected to be in the play is fog from a fog machine when the
ghosts come to visit Scrooge. My expectations were right because whenever another ghost came
on stage, fog came out surrounding them. There was fog when the ghosts came out to give a
spooky and ghostly feeling to the play. Special effects is the second aspect from Meadowbrook
Theaters production of A Christmas Carol
The third aspect from Meadowbrook Theaters production of A Christmas Carol is
deleted/added scenes. One scene I thought was going to be added into the play, was Marley
being shown in a flashback before he dies. My thoughts were incorrect because Marley was not
shown before he died. Meadowbrook Theater did not add this scene to the play because Marley
didnt significantly affect Scrooge when he was alive. Scrooges hate for Christmas was caused
by Marleys death. Nothing important would happen in the time of the play when Marley was

alive. One scene I thought would stay in the play, is the scene where Scrooge sees himself as a
school boy, at Fezziwigs party, and his old fiance ending their engagement. Meadowbrook
Theater kept this in the play because it was an important part of helping him change into a better
person. Without seeing his past, Scrooge never would have changed into the person he became.
Another scene I expected to stay in the play, is the scene when the Ghost of Christmas Present
shows Scrooge Want and Ignorance. Meadowbrook Theater kept this in the play because this
scene was an important metaphor that haunted Scrooge into doing the right thing. The two
children represent two traits that will control you into doing things you shouldn't do. This was
another way Scrooge changed into a better person. Deleted/added scenes is the third aspect from
Meadowbrook Theaters production of A Christmas Carol.
Most of my expectations were right for Meadowbrook Theaters production of A
Christmas Carol while others were not. All of my predictions for the aspect, dialogue, were met.
For the aspects special effects and deleted/added scenes, not all of them were correct.
Meadowbrook Theater did a great job of telling the story of A Christmas Carol.
