To whom it may concern;

My name is Dean Arevalo and I would like to take a moment of your time to first thank
you for reading this essay, and to introduce myself. I know how incredibly busy you are
and I also know you must receive hundreds of these essays from perspective athletes and
students constantly. I know that it is imperative you find and create the best possible
students for CSU at Pueblo. I hope to show you I am an outstanding candidate for your
school and wrestling team.
Over the last year, my parents, school counselor, coach and I have been researching
colleges that would be a good fit for me both athletically and academically. I feel CSU at
Pueblo is at the very top of my list. It would be an honor to attend your university and to
wrestle under.
I have researched CSU at Pueblo have discovered it is a formidable opponent in the
NCAA DIV II. CSU- Pueblo finished the 2014-2015 season with an 8-9 record with three
national qualifiers in 133, 165 and 285weight classes. I have also learned the university
itself boats a student ratio of 16:1 and has an outstanding strength and conditioning
program that will contribute to all of the athletic teams on campus.
I have wrestled all four years I have attended Riverside Polytechnic High School. Soon
after joining my freshman year, I was able to secure a varsity spot even though I had not
wrestled prior. Each year I have fallen more in love with the sport and each year I have
dedicated myself to improvement. I am a four year varsity wrestler, so far three time CIF
qualifier, one time league champion, and one time Masters Qualifier. It is my goal this

year to qualify to state and place high in the California State Tournament. I have and
continue to work very hard in the off season, and I have placed in all but one off season
tournaments, along with earning medals in each.
I have been chosen as a team captain for my varsity wrestling team for the past two years
and I take that responsibility very serious.
Academically, I have maintained a GPA over a 2.5 and currently holding a 3.6 I have
passed all of the California High School Exit Exams and upon graduating high school
will have met all NCAA DI, DII, and NAIA academic requirements. I have taken the SAT
and obtained a score of 1080 and will soon take the ACT exam.
Socially, I was a six year member of the United States Navy Sea Cadet Corps rising in the
ranks to Petty Officer Second Class. During this time I participated in numerous
community service events, military training and leadership courses. I have also assisted in
several community service events with the Anaheim Police Department where my father
is a 26 year veteran of the force. Being a Naval Sea Cadet I have been placed in many
different leadership positions in which I was held accountable with great responsibility. I
was not only responsible for myself but also the 20 cadets under my command. While
being in the program we were given coursework in preparation for tests so we could rank
up. It was my responsibility to study and work during my free time. There was no one
there to remind me to study for testing. Sea Cadet Staff always left it up to us. The skills I
have learned in the Sea Cadet Corp will help me with the transition from high school to
college.
Every day, I wake up ready to give my all with my schooling and wrestling. I study and
stay school whenever I need extra help in my class work. After school I go straight to
practice ready to work hard in the wrestling by being a good example and a role model to
my fellow teammates. Leadership is very important to me. It has been instilled in my
mind to always guide people down the right path in order to help them be successful.
I surround myself with people who have the same interests as me. I dont let people
influence me with negative thoughts and I keep myself surrounded by people with good
morals and strong character traits. Being a student at Pueblo I will have the opportunity to
dorm with many others who share the same interests and goals.
I plan on majoring in business so I can learn how to control and manage my own
business. Having leadership experience will contribute to me being in charge of a
business one day. I realize that Pueblo has a great business management course that can

teach me fundamentals to help make me well educated in that field of work, and
ultimately getting me on my feet ready to go!
My future plans after college are to complete Officer Candidate School for the United
States Marine Corps and be recognized as a commissioned officer. After commissioning I
would like to pursue the challenging training to become a Marsoc Marine (Special
Forces) and use my leadership skills to command troops to the best of my abilities. Going
to school at Pueblo will make my chances of achieving this goal greater and will help
turn my dream into a reality. Once I get out of the Marine Corps, I plan on being the head
coach of a high school wrestling team. Having the experience of being a college wrestler,
I can continue with my passion and share my knowledge with others so they can also be
successful.
In conclusion, I feel that attending CSU-Pueblo will provide me with all the opportunities
that will open doors for me. My goals are big, but I work extremely hard for them. There
is no better place to begin the second chapter of my life than at the University of Pueblo.
Thank you for your consideration, and if admitted, I will do everything possible to uphold
all of the standards and virtues of your great university.
