St. Nicholas eve and gift giving

On the sixth of December, children would set their shoes by the
chimney for Pre Nol to fill with toys.
The white bearded, big bellied Santa Clause appeared in the beginning
of the 20th century in France.
A man, Pre Fouttard, originally accompanied Pre Nol, and he would
whip naughty children, but that legend was dropped.
The French have similar gift giving traditions to America, with
differences lying in product, not method.

The Feast of Christmas Day

In modern day French culture, a typical Christmas dinner consists of things like Marinated
Goat Cheese, grilled leeks and stewed garlic on toast, roasted oysters with white wine ,
endive and walnut Salad, whipped potatoes with garlic and cheese, herbed haricots verts,
rack of lamb with rosemary and thyme, and desserts like Punitions (French Shortbread
Cookies), Buche de Noel (Yule Log Cake with Coffee Buttercream and Ganache)
A more traditional French christmas dinner would consist of Lamb, pastries, Foie Gras (small
bread slices with wine), mushrooms, zucchini, with various types of cheese, made from
cows milk, female sheep, and goat.

Pre Fouettard
Pre Fouettard was a french urban legend, one day he lured 3
children into his butchery and salted them and ate them. ST.
Nicolas then came to save the children which required him to
ressurected the children, ever since Pre Fouettard (Which
translates to father whipper) has followed St. Nicolas around in
shame, and fills bad children's stocking with coal while St.
Nicolas gives gifts to the well behaved children.

How St. Nicolas came to be...

One legend is that there were 3 children who
wandered away and got lost. Cold and hungry, a
wicked butcher lured them into his shop where
he attacked and salted them away in a large tub.
St. Nicolas then restored the boys to their
families.
The people of France acknowledged that St.
Nicolas as the protector of Christmas. The evil
butcher became known as Pre Fouettard who
still follows St. Nicolas around in shame.
