Immigration is one of our biggest growing concerns in the United States. For
many decades our government has fought a mini war against the broken
immigration system. While trying to create better laws to maintain our countrys
security strong, they have failed, making immigration somewhat of a big issue.
Our broken immigration system is not only affecting more than 11 million
undocumented people living in the United States but also the lives of their citizen
families, our economy, and our countries security.
When Obama took the white house in 2008 one of his biggest promises he made
was to fix our broken immigration system since then this fight has been non stop
and is continuing to grow and affect our country. This is not only a concern in the
Latino community but also for the thousands of other undocumented population
who is living under the shadows as well as for all American citizens.
In the past 30 years we have spent more than $187 billion dollars on immigration
enforcement. The Obama Administration has worked hard to create a path to
citizenship for many of the 11 million people living in the United States without
legal documentation. For example the Provisional Unlawful Presence Waiver
allowing less separation time for spouses and children who are in process of
adjusting their legal status, DACA which allows students who meet certain
requirements to receive a temporary work permit and a big one they that will be
brought to the Supreme Court once again, DAPA, creating a path to citizenship
for the parents of dreamers and citizen children.
However, while all these amazing laws where being created, during this time, just
in the year 2013, they have also established the highest amount of deportations,
observed to be over 400,000. We are spending a ridiculous amount of money
deporting people whose only goal is to achieve the American Dream and give
their families a better life and who also play an important role in driving our
economy.
Yes we do need to figure out better ways to lower our crime rates and to prevent
further acts of terrorism, but we cannot fix the issue by targeting the wrong
people. We need to be intelligent and not ignorant to the fact that immigrants
have contributed to America in many good ways, bringing their rich culture and
expertise. For example we have many, many, small and large businesses that
have created job for millions of people and have attracted many foreign
entrepreneurs. Our government likes to attribute the bad causes of our country to
illegal immigration but immigration although one of our biggest issues isnt
necessarily our biggest problem.
