Guide for Host Families

Charlotte Kundts
2015
Passage II Proposal
Hansen, Kirsten

I.
Introduction
My family has always been interested in hosting a student but this year was the first year
that we received a student from Mongolia for a week. No one told us anything about hosting
besides getting our student where they needed to be and feeding them. We didn't know how we

Kundts 2

should act or what we should do while they were here which lead to a awkward atmosphere for
the first 36 hours or so. Because of my experience I want to create a Guide for Host Families.
This guide will include interviews and experiences from previous host families, suggestions from
current exchange students, places to take exchange students, shopping areas, what to expect,
what to prepare for and more. This passage will allow me to interact more with the DCIS
community, learn more from more experienced host families and share useful information for
those who wish to host in the future. The final product would be used as a resource in the Travel
Center.

IV. GPS Domains

This passage will demonstrate my proficiency in three of the four GPS domains:
Communicating Ideas, Recognizing Perspectives and Taking Action. I will communicate my
ideas through my guide for host families PDFs that the DCIS community will have access to in
the travel center. I am recognizing perspectives by looking at the exchange experience from both
the exchange student and host family. I am Taking Action by creating a guide for others with
interviews and recent information on Colorado.
V. Form
The form of this passage will be a presentation, a finished Guide for Host Families,
documented interviews and pictures of the exchange students and host families who let me

interview them. The audience for this passage will be DCIS students and staff and the audience
for the final product will be current and future host families.
VI.
Anticipated Challenges
The most difficult part of this passage will be time management and editing. I am starting
this passage about 3 months later than other students leaving me with a month and a half to start
and finish it. Also, even though I think of myself as a proficient writer I am not very good at
editing my work so that it sounds clean and flows well.
