Justification church was used instead of synagogues because at grade two students have a solid understanding of what a church is. Justification
Church was used instead of
synagogues because at grade two students have a solid understanding of what a church is therefore if we were to introduce a different word for a similar meaning some students may become confused. Sabbath was changed to day of worship because not only is Sabbath a complex word but the actual meaning of the word goes too in depth, that year two would not be able to comprehend. Sabbath has been changed to day of worship throughout the adapted version. We slightly changed the wording in this line to make it simpler and to point out the more important parts of the text that are relevant to the storyline. We left out by a spirit because year two students will focus on the less important details (a spirit) rather than the moral of the story that is developing. The word infirmity was left out and changed to disease because its meaning can be interpreted by using a more simpler word instead of a word that students wont already know and have a deep understanding with. Students are able to focus on the presence of Gods kingdom instead of the meaning behind a formal word not commonly used in every day language. (Reading Luke book) The wording in this line was changed slightly but with no major adjustments. The line was only adapted because it incorporated language that year two would not be entirely familiar with. Angry was used instead of indignant because students already have a deep understanding of the word anger, what it means and the expression someone would have on their face if they were angry. Students want to hear a story with words they know inside and out rather than words that dont help make sense of the story that is being told. Sabbath was changed to day of worship again for reasons stated above. The word synagogue was taken out completely to help the sentence flow In a simpler form. Instead of saying The Lord answered we chose to write, Jesus responded because it will be much easier for students to understand by not changing Jesus name mid story. Some students may become confused because it sounds like another character has been added into the story. Hypocrites was replaced with pretenders because during the early years students learn to recognise when something is real or pretending to be real. Students would then
Adapted Version
10 Jesus was teaching in a church on the day
of worship. 11 And then appeared a woman who had been crippled for eighteen years. She was bent over and could not straighten up at all. 12 When Jesus saw her, he called her forward and said woman, I set you free from your disease.
13 Jesus touched the woman with his hands.
The woman stood up and began praising God. 14 But the church leader was angry, because Jesus had healed on the worship day. The leader said to the people There are six other days Jesus can work, come on those days and he will heal you. Dont come on the worship day. 15 But Jesus responded to the leader and said You pretenders! On the worship day dont most of you untie your donkey and give it fresh water?
16 So shouldnt this woman suffered for 18
years from disease be set free on the day of worship? 17 When Jesus said this, the church leaders felt ashamed and the crowd was happy at all the wonderful things he was doing.
years, be set free on the
Sabbath day from what bound her?
17 When he said this, all his
opponents were humiliated, but the people were delighted with all the wonderful things he was doing.
recognise the significant meaning of
the word pretenders in this context, thus making sense of the text. Although this part of the text (dont most of you untie your donkey and give it fresh water?) is difficult for year two to understand, the message of the entire passage is clear through this statement. It was important we left this in the story because students need to understand the subliminal message. (The Gospel according to Luke XXXIV) The line then should not this woman, a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has kept bound for eighteen long years was removed because it isnt necessary to the over all message for grade two students to try and analyse what satin bound means or why the woman is the daughter of Abraham. This line isnt key information that the students need to interpret. The word humiliated was changed to ashamed because the humiliated would not be a word found in a year two students word bank. Students may have seen on tv people feeling ashamed or even been introduced to the word by family or even in the early years. Students trying to understand the word humiliated would take away the true meaning of the story. Students would be focussed on the wording and what they mean instead of taking in the complete message.
