Acting Character Analysis
Rhinoceros
Dudard

WHO?
Age: 28
Health: I am in perfect health, I have a long life to live ahead of me.
Family and social background: My family are middle class Parisians. They live in the
countryside and dont come to town that often. I am quite social and I spend most of my time at
work.
Mental condition: I am mentally sound, though Im not a freethinker. I go with the flow
Education: I am educated. I went to University to get a degree in newspaper editing.
Vocation: Since I graduated from University I started working at a newspaper company, I have
been working here for 6 years.
Military experience: None
Financial Circumstances: I am middle class. I dont make a lot of money, but I am a business
man who does ok for himself, money is not a great concern for me since Im single and only
have to provide for myself.
Essence: I am a hard worker and care about my job as a newspaper editor. I also care about what
others think about me. I try to please people and be liked by them. I am open-minded and can
easily be swayed by others opinions.
How does that affect your thoughts, feeling, words, and actions? I change my mind quite
often. I am influenced by those around me. I have an interest in Daisy, one of my co-workers,
who Im constantly trying to please and seduce. I work to provide for only myself, being a single
man with a decent paying job makes me a little selfish.
WHAT?
What is the event in which you find yourself? I find myself surrounded by people in my town
who are turning into rhinoceroses. This is becoming a huge pandemic and I really dont know
what to think of it. I have come over to my co-worker and friends house, Berenger, where I find
that Daisy has also come to visit. I wanted to discuss more about the rhinoceroses and to inform
Berenger that more of our co-workers have turned into rhinoceroses.
What happens in the course of that event? While Berenger and I are in the middle of a
conversation we are interrupted by a herd of rhinos running through the streets, we discuss a
little bit about the rhinos and then I realize that everyone is turning into rhinos and so I decide it
cant be such a bad thing. I want to join them, so I begin turning into a rhino and leave to join the
rhinos outside.
How does that affect your thoughts, feelings, words, and actions? I become considerably
crazy, I start doing weird things and saying things that I wouldnt normally say. My opinions
change and I give in to the peer pressure of the rhinoceroses.

WHERE?
Nation: Small provincial French village
Region: France
Indoors or outdoors? Indoors
Weather: Its a midday
Crowded or deserted: Neither crowded, nor deserted. The house has three people in it.
Urban or rural: Urban
Opulent or ramshackle: Its really neither as it is a middle class house.
Public or private: Private
Formal or informal: Informal
Pleasant or unpleasant: Neither
Familiar or unfamiliar: I have been at Berengers house maybe once or twice before.

destroying things. Its not impossible for the rhinos to start destroying my house as well though.
Animate Nature: rhinos
Inanimate Nature: table, chairs, food, flowers
Things you are using I use the flowers and hat
How do those elements affect your thoughts, feelings, words, and actions? I feel uptight that
the rhinoceroses are outside the house, I see them wreaking havoc and I am trying to understand
it all. I am trying to decide what choice I should make, whether I should join the rhinos or
continue struggling as a human.
WHEN? 1954
How does that affect your thoughts, words, feelings, and actions? This all happens post
WWII. This is a time when we are dealing with themes such as fascism and tyranny and how to
recover to normalcy after the world war. It makes me question whether to give into fascism or to
keep defying what the rest of the country is going along with.
WHY?
Why are you there? I have come to visit Berenger and reveal that our boss, Mr. Papillion has
also turned into a rhinoceros
What do you expect to happen? I expect that Berenger will agree with me on our views about
the rhinoceroses, especially when he sees that the Logician has turned into one, to me this means
that there must be some logic and reason to becoming a rhinoceros.
What do you want to happen? I really dont know what I want to happen. I am not completely
sure what I believe about the rhinoceroses and Im on the fence about them.
What actually occurs? Because Im unsure about the rhinos I am easily swayed and I falter for
a moment, but that it all I need to start changing into a rhino as well and run off to join the herd
outside.
How does that affect your thoughts, feelings, words, and actions? I become just like everyone
else giving into tyranny and the destruction that the rhinos are known for.
MOMENT BEFORE AND AFTER
Where were you physically and mentally before the scene? I was making a wild run to
Berengers house, trying not to be seen by the rhinos or get in there way. I was pretty scared on
my way over to the house.

Where do you expect to be? I expect to end up at Berengers house.
Where do you want to be? Im not sure whether I want to stay at Berengers house or join the
rhinos
How does that affect your thoughts, feelings, words, and actions? I am very indecisive. I am
not seeing very far into the future and Im beginning to lose hope for the human race. I am
starting to think it might be best to just give in and join the rhinos since everyone else is, that is
where all the events are leading us and Id rather not be the odd one out anyways.
WHO?
Who are the other people in the scene? Berenger, Daisy, Rhinos
Who are the other people in the rest of the script? Berenger, Daisy, Jean, Botard, The
Logician, The Waitress The Old Gentleman, Mr. Papillion, and Mrs. Boeuf
How do you speak/behave to them? I usually just try to please them and act the way they
would want me to. I am attracted to Daisy so I usually try to flirt with her.
How do you expect them to behave toward you? I generally expect people to like me. Thats
what I want anyways.
How does that affect your thoughts, feelings, words, and actions? All of this means that Im
not incredibly confident or sure of myself all the time. I want people to like me so I sometimes
conform to what they want from me. I do have my own opinions, but Im easily molded since
Im a people pleaser.
