The students learned everything from this lesson that was possible. The teaching method was effective in the way to keep the students interested and engaged with the use of poems. The activity was effective in presenting identifying key elements of text using a color coding system.

EDE 4941.013 Professor Andrea Willson Observation Reflection #1- CT Observation of a Lesson on Similes, Metaphors, and Idioms Reflection 1. What aspects of your lesson were implemented differently than you planned? Why did that happen? There was nothing that changed during implementing this lesson; it went as planned and was very smooth. 2. If you were going to teach this lesson to the same group of students, what would you do differently? Why? What would you do the same? Why? The one thing I would change for this group would be to limit their color choice and have them use highlighters instead of liner markers. I would change to this to allow them less waiting time between lesson sheets and poems as well as keep the passages connected for notes. The one thing I would do the same would be the use of poems. It really interested the students and made the lesson fun for them. 3. What surprised you in your lesson? One thing that surprised me about my lesson was how much the students liked the poems I picked out for them.
4. Describe an instance or particular encounter that comes to mind. Why
did you pick that instance? What is so perplexing about that particular moment? The event I picked was how off tasks this groups of kids was how much they were calling out ideas. This groups never normally does this but it allowed me to realize I need to work on classroom management this semester and get better at how to redirect students. 5. What connections can you make to your lesson today from your coursework, the literature, and any previous lessons or experiences? The biggest connection that can be made is to my instructional planning class where we are learning about the focuses of planning a worthwhile lesson. Analysis 1. To what extent did the students learn what was intended? How do you know? The students learned everything from this lesson that was possible. I know this based on student response on the last poem which as a little harder them the first few selections. a. In what ways were your teaching methods effective? How do you know? The teaching method was effective in the way to keep the students interested and engaged with the use of poems based on their reactions to the material. b. In what ways were your activities effective? How do you know? The activity was effective in the way that it presented identifying key elements of text using a color coding method. c. In what ways were the instructional materials effective?
Having the student use colors for color coding allowed
them to easily see what type of element was in the text when they we asked after they read. d. How did any special considerations of the accommodations affect the lesson? Since this was a small group of on-level students I did not offer any accommodations for these students. 2. Identify an individual or groups of students who had difficulty in todays lesson. How do you account for this performance? How will you help this (these) student(s) achieve the learning objectives? There was one student who had difficulty with this lesson toward the beginning. As soon as I noticed I focused my instruction to me for explicit when giving direction and he was able to meet the learning objectives. 3. Identify an individual or group of students who did especially well in this lesson today. How do you account for this performance? There was one student who sailed through identifying the elements for the objectives. I accounted for this once I noticed her excelling my having her wrap up the conversation my giving her thoughts as well as going in depth with her explains to make sure she was understanding the material. 4. Based on what happened in this lesson, what are the next steps? What do you plan to teach next to this class? Be sure to explain how you will use information from this evaluation in future lesson planning? The next step for this lesson is to integrate it with another subject such as science or social studies to have the students notice
cross curriculum elements that are shared. They then can use this to break down information in books about all different topics.
