Unit Title: Forensic Dentistry
Name of Course/Programme Level: Forensic Dentistry, Undergraduate Dentistry programme, Year 4,
Semester 2 course.
Unit Summary: However, the role is broader as it plays important role in dentistry research and is of
immense benefit to clinicians, patients and the public health system. The request for and performance of
autopsy have been on the decline despite its obvious merits to medical and dental practice, the patients
and public health. This unit focuses on the introductory lecture on forensic dentistry, forensic
anthropology, forensic pathology as well as lip and finger print correlation.
Primary interdisciplinary connections: The information in the forensic dentistry is linked with the
knowledge from basic dental and medical courses that were previously taught in early years (Year 1 to
Year 3). The forensic principles taught in this course will be linked with oral anatomy and histology
courses and compile for the purpose of legal evidence. The following disciplines are linked with this unit:
unit links with the disciplines
1. Medical Anatomy
2. Oral and Dental Anatomy
3. Oral Histology
4. Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology
Themes/Focus Questions:
1. What information can be obtained from the dental and oral tissues?
2. What type of tissue changes can occur after death?
3. How to estimate the time or cause of the death?
4. Do lip prints have any forensic significance?
4 THEMES ARE THE FOUR LESSONS.
Unit Rationale:
1. To build a foundational knowledge on the importance of evidence collection.
2. To recognize the significance of dental and oral tissues in forensic investigation.
3. To use the knowledge of dental and oral tissues and apply in the crime and victim identification
for the purpose of identifying age, sex and ethnicity of the individuals.
4. To create and devise molecular techniques in the forensic dentistry investigation methods.

-Explain the role of dentist in forensic investigation
-Effectively recognize the role of forensic anthropologist and pathologist
-Discuss various age estimation methods from dental tissues.
-Demonstrate the lip and finger print pattern analysis that are employed in forensic investigation.
Evidence of Learning
Formative Assessment (X days)
The course consists of more hands-on laboratory work and weighted as course work. The entire course
work is graded by the lecturer and course leader. The hands-on laboratory work consists of age estimation
10% course grade.
