Purpose
SantaFeBirthtoCareerCollaboration(SFB2C)isacollectiveimpacteffortamong
committedleadersandstakeholderstoachievebirthtocareersuccessforallSanta
Fechildren,families,andcommunitiesbyaligningourstrategies,actions,and
resourcestoimproveoutcomes.

SharedVision
ThesharedvisionforSFB2CisBirthtoCareerSuccessforallSantaFechildren,
familiesandcommunitiesbyachieving:
SuccessfulTransitionsacrossthebirthtocareercontinuumforallchildren/
studentsbyensuringreadiness,supportandcompletionacrossstages.
Wellbeingforvulnerablechildrenandfamiliesbyprovidingcoordinated,two
generationalwraparound support to help them thrive and succeed in school.
Equityinopportunitiesforchildrenandfamiliesbyaddressingcriticalresource

InvestinginSystemsforCollectiveImpact
SFB2Cinvestsinbuildingsystemstoenableandsustainthecollectiveimpactsover
thelongterminSantaFe. Theseeffortscurrentlyinclude:
SupportingCollaborativeWorkingGroupsonfocusedoutcomes;
Developing a Data, Resource and Collaboration Hub to facilitate sharing of
informationtoguidedecisionsandactions;and
Regularconveningandengagementofcommunityleadershipand stakeholders
for continuous communications and learning.
SantaFeCommunityFoundationcurrentlyprovidesbackbonesupportforthe
collaboration.

Summary of Key Data and Research Findings

SantaFehasahigherrateoflowbirthbabiescomparedtostateandnationalaverages.In2013,9.9%or129babieswerebornatlowbirth
weightinSantaFe.
SantaFeCountysrateofmothersreceivingearlyprenatalcareexceedsthatofthestatebyover10percentagepoints.However,
approximately25%or328pregnantmothersinSantaFestilldidnotreceiveprenatalcareduringthefirsttrimesterin2013.
Wedonotknowifchildrenages0to4inSantaFearemeetingtheirdevelopmentalmilestonesduetolimitedtrackingandreportingofdata
onscreeningresultsandreferralfollowupsoutsideofHomeVisitingprogramsandfederalHeadStart.
SantaFesrateofsubstantiatedchildabuseandneglectislowerthantheNewMexicostatewideaverage;however,inthepastyear,therate
hasincreasedsubstantially.Therewereapproximately20per1,000childrenor158totalsubstantiatedchildabuseandneglectcasesin
2015.
Approximatelyhalfor733fouryearoldsarecurrentlyattendingpubliclyfundedNMPreKorHeadStartprogramsinSantaFe.Limitedfull
timePreKcapacityandtransportationaresomeofthebarrierstofurtherexpandingaccess.
AccordingtoDIBELSFirstSoundFluencyassessment,aproxyindicator(withlimitations)forkindergartenreadiness,onlyabout54%of
studentsenteringKindergarteninSantaFecurrentlymeettheearlyliteracybenchmark.

Action Plan Recommendations

Develop/supportcoordinatedpublicawarenesscampaignandcommunityoutreachonearlychildhoodissuesandresources:
o Promotepublicawarenessofearlychildhooddevelopment,braindevelopmentandvalueofearlyinvestments;promoteawareness

Surveyandroundtablediscussionswithmentoring,tutoringandinternshipprogramsinSantaFesuggestedaneed/potentialforcity
widementoring,tutoring&internshiphubandimprovedengagementofbusinesses(seerecommendations).

Anationalstudy,TheSilentEpidemicreport,stated47%ofdropouthighschoolstudents1624yearsofagesaidtheydroppedout
becauseclasseswerenotinteresting.Thiswasthenumberonereasonforleavingschool.81%ofdropoutsmentionedthatopportunities
forrealworldlearningexperienceswouldhaveimprovedtheirchancesofstayinginschool.
In20132014,theNewMexicograduationratewas69%butstudentswithacareertechnicalconcentrationhadagraduationrateof90%.
Among1624youthwhoareoutofschoolinSantaFe(approximately7,000),16%areunemployed.Additional21%arenotinlaborforce.
Youthwhoarenotinschoolwithouthighschooldiplomaorequivalentaretwicemorelikelytobenotworking(57%)vs.thosewhoare
HSgraduates(26%).
Povertyrate14.2%in2014.Povertyrateismuchhigherforchildrenunder18(20.8%),foradultswithouthighschooldiploma(25.4%),
andthoseunemployed(45.3%).
YoungeradultsinSantaFehavemuchlowereducationalattainmentthanolderadults.79%ofpopulation2534havehighschool
graduateorhigherand24.6%havebachelorsdegreeorhigher.Forpopulation4564,therateis88.8%forhighschoolgraduateor
higherand45.9%forbachelorsorhigher.
