There are three separate sets of OSHA standards: General Industry (29 CFR 1910),
Construction (29 CFR 1926), and Maritime Employment (29 CFR 1915-1919).
To consider hazards not specifically included in OSHA standards, OSHA has turned to
the provisions of Section 5(a) of the OSHAct or the General Duty Clause that
states
Each employer
(1) shall furnish to each of his employees employment and a place of
employment which are free from recognized hazards that are causing or are
likely to cause death or serious physical harm to his employees;
(2) shall comply with occupational safety and health standards promulgated
under this Act.
