2nd Grade Readers with comprehension issues

2 days of lessons (30 min/day)

Day 1:
Intro book Essential Question, Genre
Preview and Predict
Table of contents
Vocabulary: all of this weeks words - review with students
This group practices decoding strategies along with having reciprocal
teaching cards. We all discuss predictions after previewing the book.
Every student has a board that they can write words on that they are
having trouble reading or understanding if I am listening to another
student read. This shows that they are all monitoring. They know they
will be asked to summarize or ask questions after reading.
Read chapter 1-2 (pages 2-11)
STP at each page. If they still dont comprehend they go back and
reread to STP at each paragraph to break down the page. While the
students read I listen in and model or suggest decoding strategies
along with asking clarifying questions or listen to their answers to
Stop and Check questions.
End of day one I have students summarize with sentence stems or ask
questions that they have developed.
I like to discuss the vocabulary skill. U3W2s objective is to know,
understand, and be able to determine the meaning of an idiom. On
page 8 it says, keep your eye on the ball Is James keeping a ball on
his eye? (no) The words in the sentence have a different meaning than
all the words put together. So, what does this mean?
Before they leave group I ask them to share one strategy that helped
them be a better reader that day.
Day 2:
Review/Retell what was learned yesterday. We walk from page 2-11
reviewing important information that they need to remember in order
to understand what they read today.
Go over vocabulary words for this upcoming chapter (Even though we
went over it yesterday)
Have them make predictions about what they will read today.
Students still have boards to write down words to decode.
Read chapter 3, pages 12-15.
Read, decode, STP
Answer Stop and Check questions

Make sure students understand what happened during the

game. If necessary, have a discussion about hitting a
home run or what a home run is.
Ask questions

After all students are done reading, they will answer a writing frame.
This writing frame has to do with our comprehension skill: cause and
effect. I point to cause and effect objective and read it to students.
Hearing __________________________________________s story caused
James to think differently about himself. When James was
________________________ he would think about Jackie Robinson and take
a deep __________________________. This calmed him down. This story
shows that _______________ person can __________________________ the
way you think.
Students read their answers to the writing frames aloud.
