a 35 year old man is admitted to er with chest pain; past history reveals other

episodes of this same pain but of shorter duration inquiry into his personal habits
reveals that he is a cigarette smoker and that he follow a modified low fat diet and
engage in some regular exercise. his father died of ischemic heart disease at age
45, and other members of his family have had lipid related disorders. fasting was
drawn for chemistry and hematology test, and urine is collected for examination.
laboratory results follow:
hemoglobin=15.0g/dl
wbc count=mildly elevated
serum glucose 120.0 mg/dl
serum triglycerides=300.0mg/dl
serum ldl cholesterol=150.0 mg/dl
serum total cholesterol=275.0mg/dl
serum enzymes=all mildly elevated
urinalysis=normal findings

a 48 year old woman was seen by her family physician complaining of malaise,
fatigue, and anorexia.her husband had noticed that the white of her eyes looked
yellw. she denied a history of drug use. she had no other social risk factor for
hepatitis. however, 2 months earlier shed had recieved a blood transfusion during
an emergency dilatation and curettage. laboratory test indicated an eleveted alt
level. serologic test results for hepatitis b were negative.
