Course Summative

A Global Citizens Memoirs


You will assume the role of a fictitious person who was born somewhere in the world
between 1875-1905. You will write your memoirs which will describe both the events
in your life and your reaction to those events (this includes talking about people you
meet, what you think of them, how their lives are impacted).

Your fictitious person must be from a specific place, and have a specific ethnic
heritage (English, Austrian, German, French, American, or anything else you
like).
Your character will need to be alive for World War I and II
You should discuss not only your experiences, but the experiences of your family
members, friends and people you meet along your journey.

Your Defining Moments / defining experiences


Each paragraph should centre on a defining moment or defining experience in your
life. You must describe at least 5 defining moment/defining experiences for your life
You must discuss most or all of the following themes in your memoirs:
1. War, peace and security
2. Your Country and if you immigrate any new country
3. Your Countrys (Countries) Place and Role in World Affairs
4. Relations/Connections: Explain what countries relations are affected ex.
American-German (can be more that 2)
5. Demographic Developments and Change
6. Economic and Technological Developments and Change
7. Social Change
8. Political Movements and Developments
Many defining moments/experiences are important to more than one theme:
For example,
Depression conditions could deal with Economic and Technological
Developments and Change, and , Political Movements and Developments.
and Demographic Developments and Change.
Of course, your character will have a specific point of view about these events, depending
on their your frame of reference (e.g. age, gender, ethnicity, family and life experience)

Course Summative

You will need to have a concluding paragraph which demonstrates an understanding of


how your character feels he/she has contributed to the development of their (your)
Country/World Events and what he/she believes they are or should be.

Research Requirements
You must research the events that your character experiences. To be able to present the
information from their personal point of view, you must have at least 5 sources (ideally a
mix of primary and secondary sources).These can be sources that you have previously
consulted in your research throughout this course.
Some Primary sources: Newspapers, diaries, government documents and archives,
written accounts, pictures, paintings, political cartoons, autobiographies, audio
recordings, oral accounts (you can interview family members if you wish),
advertisements etc.
Some secondary sources: Textbooks, historical accounts, documentaries, essays,
biographies, articles, etc.
You must have a minimum of 5 pages of research notes (one from each source). These
must include:
The FULL bibliographic information of the source
The page numbers if a text resource
Your notes in point form, in your own words on the KEY information
An analysis statement What did you learn? What questions does this
information raise? What more information do you need to know? What
conclusions can you draw? What is your characters personal reaction to this
event?
You will need to cite information that you use that is historical fact. You can use
footnotes, endnotes or parenthetical citations. IT IS IMPORTANT to make sure that you
are not plagiarizing!
You will also need to include a list of works cited. This includes only the sources that
you cite in the memoir. This should be prepared ahead of time, before you write the
memoir in class.
