ABOUT THE CITIES

Cusco
Cusco often spelled Cuzco is a city in southeastern Peru, near the Urubamba Valley of
the Andes mountain range. It is the capital of the Cusco Region as well as the Cusco Province. In 2013,
the city had a population of 435,114. Located on the eastern end of the Knot of Cuzco, its elevation is
around 3,400 m (11,200 ft.).
The site was the historic capital of the Inca Empire from the 13th into the 16th century until the Spanish
conquest. In 1983 Cusco was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. It has become a major tourist
destination, receiving nearly 2 million visitors a year. The Constitution of Peru designates it as the
Historical Capital of Peru.
Incan majesty and Andean baroque exist side-by-side in Cusco's stone streets, epitomized by the
Qoriacancha palace and the church of Santo Domingo flanking the Plaza de Armas. In this high-altitude
melting pot of Amerindian and mestizo culture, you'll find extraordinary textiles, lively summer festivals
and archeological wonders.

Machu Picchu
Machu Picchu was declared a Peruvian Historical Sanctuary in 1981 and a UNESCO World Heritage
Site in 1983. In 2007, Machu Picchu was voted one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in a
worldwide Internet poll.
Machu Picchu was built in the classical Inca style, with polished dry-stone walls. Its three primary
structures are the Inti Watana, the Temple of the Sun, and the Room of the Three Windows.
Machu Picchu stands 2,430 m above sea-level, in the middle of a tropical mountain forest, in an
extraordinarily beautiful setting. It was probably the most amazing urban creation of the Inca Empire at
its height; its giant walls, terraces and ramps seem as if they have been cut naturally in the continuous
rock escarpments. The natural setting, on the eastern slopes of the Andes, encompasses the upper Amazon
basin with its rich diversity of flora and fauna.

Lima
World Heritage Site
In the north is the city of Caral, the oldest civilization of America, and to the south is the Archaeological
Complex of Pachacamac. Lima's history predates the colonial presence in the country. The establishment
of the viceroyalty transformed the city into the main political and administrative center of South America.
During this period, significant churches, monasteries, mansions and balconies were built. The arrival of
modernity didnt transform the historic center, which is recognized as a World Heritage Site.
Museums with great works of art, archaeological sites, beaches, the boardwalk, valleys, natural reserves,
the nightlife, the thrill of adventure sports, and the exquisite cuisine gives Perus capital an authentic
personality and makes tourism in Lima a unique experience in the country.
Location: On the west central coast of Peru, on the shores of the Pacific Ocean.
Extension: Metropolitan Lima: 2,817 km2.

abroad.

payment at the time of treatment.
Have ready access to at least $500 (credit card or travelers checks) in the event medical
treatment is required.
Bring contact information for your primary health-care provider with you. Pack a few blank claim
forms in case you need them.
Submit your insurance information to HPS Summer Study Abroad Program Coordinator on-line.

HPSSummerStudyAbroadProgramGuidelineInitials:___________

Questions to consider when acquiring insurance

When does the plan begin and end?
Will the plan cover hospitalization for accidents and illnesses for the entire time I am abroad?
Will the plan cover doctor visits and medication prescribed abroad?
Does the plan cover pre-existing medical conditions?
Are there treatments or types of treatment centers that will not be covered?
Is there a deductible? If so, how much?
Is there a dollar limit to the amount of coverage provided?
What are the procedures for filing a claim for medical expenses abroad? Do I need to pay
expenses up front and then submit receipts to the insurance company for reimbursement?
What if I dont have enough money to pay cash up front? Can money be wired/sent abroad? How
do I do that?
What do I use as proof of international medical coverage (if I need to use the insurance or if the
host government requires documentation)?
Does the plan cover non-U.S. citizens?
Will this insurance cover me in the U.S. for the insured semester if I decide, for medical or other
reasons, to return before the end of the program? (If students have a serious accident or illness
abroad, they may need to return to the U.S. for further care; it is therefore important that students
obtain coverage that applies not only abroad, but also in the U.S. during the study abroad period.)
Health Considerations While Abroad
Take care of foreseeable health needs (medical, mental, dental, gynecological, optical, etc.) before you go
abroad.
Your state of mind
Going abroad is not a magic cure for problems at home. Any health issues you have will follow you
wherever you travel. New circumstances can even exacerbate existing issues into crises while you're
away. If you are concerned about your physical or emotional health, including use of alcohol or other
controlled drugs, address your situation honestly before going abroad.
Prescription and Over-the-Counter Medicine
If you take prescribed medications, take enough with youin your carry-on luggage to avoid problems
with customsto last 2 weeks beyond your expected return. Take a doctors note or the original
prescription. And, stay on your meds! Pack non-prescription drugs and a modest first-aid kit. If you wear
corrective lenses, pack an extra pair of glasses and/or contact lens and extra bottles of saline solution.
Immunizations
Make sure you have the recommended immunizations for the country you will live in and any countries
you plan to visit.

HPSSummerStudyAbroadProgramGuidelineInitials:___________

during weekend excursions) and laundry service is provided at least once a week. Two to three HPS
Summer Study Abroad Program students are placed with each homestay. Please note that homestays are
not always comprised of "traditional families," and can take the form of single parent households,
widows, or adults without children. All homestays undergo extensive evaluation processes that assure
student safety and comfort. Single rooms in homestays can be requested for an additional fee, and in some
cases not every student is assigned a roommate. Living arrangements may be within walking distance to

UNIVERSITY
In terms of most articles published, broad surveys including the world best scholars, number of graduates
per department, among other factors, Peru was included as having some of the best institutions offered in
Latin America.
A British consulting firm compiled the top 100 Latin American universities, and Peru has three of them,
according to El Comercio.

According to the prestigious Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), three of the top 100 Latin American
universities can be found in Peru, in the capital city of Lima.
St. Ignatius of Loyola University (Spanish: Universidad San Ignacio de Loyola) (USIL) is just one of
them and is a private university located in Lima, Peru, part of a group of educational institutions founded
in 1995 by former Peruvian Vice President Ral Diez Canseco, along with an institute and two schools.
Its Undergraduate Programme consists of four schools and twenty six majors, though it does have a
Graduate Programme. USIL has a strong focus on entrepreneurship and hospitality management,
consistent with its mission statement, which is "to shape competent entrepreneurial professionals who are
socially responsible and capable of performing successfully, both domestically and internationally".
The first campus is named after Fernando Belande Terry, President of Peru from 1963 to 1968 and from
1980 to 1985. It is the campus that was first built upon the university's founding and has a capacity of
about 4000 students. Besides classrooms its facilities include at least the following:

Laboratories

Cafeteria

Reading and research centers

Deans' and other administrative offices

TV and radio studios

Library

Don Ignacio Restaurant (run by students from the Culinary Arts major)
The second campus is named after Miguel Grau Seminario, Peruvian naval hero from the War of the
Pacific. It has eight floors of classrooms and also houses the Graduate Programme, offices of Junior
Achievement Peru, and further administrative offices, a cafeteria, student centers and the university's
book store. It is currently being expanded to encompass at least two more buildings to accommodate the
increase of students in recent years.

The university's Undergraduate Programme consists of four schools and twenty six majors, with strong
focuses on business, entrepreneurship, culinary arts and hospitality management, but featuring other
programs as well.

ORIENTATION
Students fly into Lima where they meet the USIL resident staff and attend on-site orientations. The
orientation program encompasses the HPS on-site orientation delivered to all students in the first days of
their HPS Summer Study Abroad Program. The USIL staff will discuss health and safety while abroad,
Peru's history and culture, what to expect while living with a homestay, the academic program, and
adjusting to daily life in Peru. The orientation program is an important introduction to a new culture, a
new home and a new experience, and is designed to prepare students for a successful, positive and
rewarding experience that will influence the rest of their lives.
After the day-long pre-program excursion, students will take a language placement exam and join a weeklong program in Lima, students will arrive in Cusco. During their first few days in their host city, students
will meet their homestay, visit the on-site office, participate in a city tour, take a language placement
exam, and begin classes.
WEEKLY SCHEDULE
In addition to classes, the USIL staff may organizes meetings to monitor students' progress and discuss
the week's itinerary, including cultural activities and excursions.

Classes are held Monday through Friday with morning sessions.
Cultural Activities
The USIL program staff develops unique cultural activities custom-designed to invite students to
experience the local color of their host city, while learning about the history and culture of their new
surroundings. Several mandatory activities are planned for each week students are abroad. Below is a list
of cultural activities the USIL staff in Cusco has organized in the past.

Excursions
Organized excursions are included with each program to complement the students study abroad
experience. These complementary experiences are designed to engage student learning outside of the
classroom in the five areas of the Expedition/Exploration Model. Transportation and guided tours are
included as well as hotel accommodations and breakfast during multi-day excursions. Additional optional
excursions may be offered during each program that are not included in the program cost, but provide
students other opportunities for expedition, exploration, and discovery.

A primary objective of all HPS High school programs is to facilitate the learning and development of
program participants. We rely on host universities to provide quality instruction in the classroom, but
HPS High School is the main facilitator of learning outside of the classroom. Efforts to promote student
