Good afternoon, boys and girls. Id like to start out lesson with two
proverbs. In both of them there is one word missing. Lets have a
look at them and try to guess what is that word. - LANGUAGE.
We all speak different languages. There are more than 2,700
languages in the world. But we have some leaders the
languages most people speak. Look at these charts. As you can
see Chinese (Mandarin) takes the first place because of the
number of people who speak this language. The second place
goes to Spanish and English is only the third. Nevertheless,
English can be called a champion as it is sometimes called the
first world language and most widely used language. So today
well talk about how to improve your L2 English in our case. So
todays lesson is called Learning Languages.
But what actually do we know about English? Lets watch some
video from the USA. I think you will recognize some characters
who might share some interesting facts about English. But before
that have a look at the screen. You see some numbers, words and
phrases. Try to understand what they mean watching the video:
English is the official language of 67 countries.
90% of English text consists of just 1000 words.
The two most common words in English are I and YOU.
25% of the worlds population speaks English.
GOODBYE comes from and Old English phrase meaning God be
with you.
As for the phrase God be with you, we can call such information
Language trivia. This is information of no much importance but
its fun, interesting and you might like it, it might help you to
learn some words, phrases.
For example, Screeched, which means to make a harsh sound,
is the longest one-syllable word in English.
