3. Emphasizing a highlight of
academic training

My graduate school research often involved deriving
complex mathematical models and then presenting
those results clearly, both in writing and orally. This
continual activity of explaining concepts to those outside
of my field of expertise was invaluable training to meet a
need that I often encounter in the workplace to provide
sufficient details to non-technical professionals to enable
them to make management decisions.

Graduate school instilled in me the need for harmony
among research collaborators to achieve a desired
outcome. As a group leader, I often organized discussion
groups on how to implement operating systems
developed in our laboratory. In addition to exchanging
relevant theoretical knowledge and individual expertise,
our group formed bonds that greatly facilitated
accumulation and analysis of data and, eventually, the
publishing of our research findings in several renowned
international journals.

My curiosity and determination to adopt
unconventional or multi-disciplinary approaches
to solve civil engineering problems not only
distinguished me from other graduate research
students, but also led to my developing a
construction engineering program that has
already been commercialized.

While heavily emphasizing self-learning and
development aimed at contributing to
collaborative research efforts, graduate school
ignited within me a strong desire to diversify my
knowledge and skills, and thus adopt multi-
disciplinary approaches in an industrial setting.

Studying at National Cheng Kung University, one of
Taiwans premier institutes of higher learning, strongly
motivated me to acquire the latest knowledge skills and
technical information. More specifically, I learned how to
analyze problems, find solutions, and implement those
solutions according to the concepts taught in class.

I also participated in a research project during my senior
year, learning how to be a contributing member of a
team and developing a thorough understanding of
teamwork. I also attended several international
conferences that addressed issues in construction
engineering to broaden my perspective on potential
applications of civil engineering and information
technology these areas are now my main areas of
interest.
