they face in society.

Assessment (the type[s] of assessment used throughout the lesson)

Assessment(s) before, during, and after the lesson.
There will be a per-assessment to see what students already know. There will also be art journaling throughout
the lesson so that I can see their thought process. Then they will complete a one page portfolio at the end of
the lesson.

Lesson Structure and Procedures

Sequence of events of the lesson elements. (The before, during, and after the lesson,
e.g., Engagement/Opening, Procedures, Guided Practice, Conclusion)
We will start with a museum tour of an Afro Cuban exhibit. We will then go back to the classroom and have a more
in depth look at the history of Afro Cuban art. Next we will discuss what we will be making and get our approach
planned. We will then create unique pieces of art based on the styles of Afro Cuban artists and issues that we face
in our own society.

Instructional Strategies
Teacher approach to helping students achieve the learning objectives and meet their
needs.
We will have a hands on experience by visiting a museum, as well as very in depth conversations and powerpoint
highlighting what we saw at the museum and the history behind it.

Learning Activities
Opportunities provided for students to develop knowledge and skills of the learning
objectives.
They will be able to see artwork in person. They will be able to explore the pieces in a more in depth manner.
They will then continue the discussion in the classroom, and translate what they have learned into a piece that
reflects them, and the issues they are facing today.

Resources and Materials

List of tools, personnel, and materials used in the planning of and during the instruction of
the lesson.
For the museum we will take pencils and our art journals. Then in the classroom we will be using powerpoint,
iPads, canvas, paint

Technology
Instructional and/or assistive technology incorporated into the lesson to enhance
instruction and student learning.
We will be using powerpoint to lead our discussion, as well as iPads to do further research.

Differentiation/Accommodations/Modifications/Increases in Rigor
To help meet the needs of all learners, learning differences, cultural and language
differences, etc.
This will be a differentiated instructed lesson where the student gets to make the decision on the style of painting
they are going to try as well as the issue they wish to tackle in the piece.

Classroom Management
Strategies consistent with the learning needs of the lesson that also meet student
behavior needs to help keep the students on task and actively engaged.
At the beginning of the semester there will be an established set of rules for what is approporite and what is not
in the art room. For this lesson typical rules will apply but the use of iPads will be heavily monitored to make sure
they are using them appropriately.

Extensions
Activities for early finishers that extend the students understanding of and thinking about
the learning objectives by applying their new knowledge in a different way.
If a student finishes early they will be asked to start working on their one page portfolio which is an out of class
assignment.

Follow-Up to Todays Lesson

Quick activity for review or building on todays learning that will deepen student
understanding and interconnect concepts (may be incorporated tomorrow or throughout
the unit).
We will use exit slip questions to have the students create deeper meaning from what they learned. It will vary from
a question they answer there in the room to questions they go home and ponder on.
