(Industrial Engineering and Management)
Time: 3 hours Max. Marks.60
Answer any Five questions
All questions carry equal marks

1.a. What are the objectives of quality control and explain various stages of
quality control
b. Explain the terms ‘variable’ and ‘attribute’ with examples and list the
benefits of statistical quality control

2.a. Describe various analytical methods for measuring central tendency.

b. Explain the importance of normal distribution curve and state the
procedure for constructing a normal distribution curve.

3.a. Explain in detail about specification limits and control limits

b. Define process capability and explain the objectives of process capability
analysis.

4.a. Define ‘ fraction defective’ and discus the quality characteristics observed
as attributes
b. A p-chart to be used to analyze the 100% inspection of certain radio
transmitting tubes. The total number inspected during the month was
2,196 and the total number of defectives was 158. Compute p. compute
3sigma control limits for the following 3 days and state whether the
fraction defectives were within limits for each day.
Date Number inspected Number of defectives
Sept. 14 54 8
15 162 24
16 213 3

5.a. How to find the limits on control charts for c.

b. A control chart for defects per unit u uses probability limits
corresponding to probabilities of 0.95 and 0.05. The central line on
control charts is u’ = 1.6. The limits vary with the values of n, determine
the correct position of these upper & lower limits when n=8

6.a. Explain the procedure for setting specification limits on discrete

components.
b. How to estimate the natural tolerance limits of a process
