PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PLAN

ABC Elementary School 2016 - 2017


Session 1
Timeframe: 2.5-hour morning or afternoon session during the first two
weeks of school conducted over a 3 or 4-day period
Location: School conference room
Equipment: Smartboard and laptops for each participant
Learners: 1 Kindergarten PLC for each 2.5-hour session to promote active
discussion and participation
Trainers: District and School Math Specialist, District or School Subject
Matter Experts (SMEs) in Math Centers, Educational Technologist

Goals: During Session 1, the teacher learners will:
Identify the key understandings in CCRSM Unit 1
Identify math processes in CCRSM Unit 1
Identify critical terminology in CCRSM Unit 1
Develop strategies for differentiating math instruction
o Number Talks
o Math centers
o Whole group, Small Group, Pairs
Develop a math center framework for their PLC
o Review CCRSM Unit 1 activities to be incorporated into math
centers
o Review CCRSM Unit 1 formative assessments - Curriculum
Embedded Performance Assessments (CEPAs) for differentiation
ideas
Develop organizational strategies for introducing and managing math
centers
Introduction: 15 Minutes

Attention Grabber: The instructor will show Jo Boalers YouTube video
segment How to Learn Math: Session 5.2: Conceptual Learning: Number
Sense topic Math Talks. Ask the learners to solve the problem at end of
segment without paper/pencil or in traditional procedural method. Follow
with discussion of how they solved the problem and then continue with video

segment 5.3 where college students discuss their process of solving the
same question.

Section 1: 40 Minutes - Number Talks


Share responses from Math Survey about Number Talks
Watch Math solutions Ten frame and dot cards (5 minutes) watch for
management and questioning techniques - followed by discussion
Utilize a Jigsaw method to read Math Solutions How to Get Students Talking!
Generating Math Talk That Supports Math Learning By Lisa Ann de Garcia
Have each participant choose one of the first 4 practices to read and share
with the group. Use Smart Notebook or Google Doc for recording responses.
Everyone reads Practice 5 Orchestrating the Discourse and focus on Table 1,
Teaching points of a kindergarten teacher during the year especially
September.
Have each participant share techniques they want to incorporate in their
number talks for whole group and pairs. Use Smart Notebook or Google Doc
for recording responses.
Watch Math Solutions Rekenreks (5 minutes) watch for management and
questioning techniques - followed by discussion
Break: 10 minutes
Section 2: Math Stations 30 minutes
Share responses from Math Survey about Math Stations
Share the definition of Math Work Stations by Debbie Diller
Have participants work in pairs or groups of 3 and complete 2 math stations.

Make a cat using 2 triangles and a circle.

Can the station be done repeatedly or is it one time and done?


Can the activity be differentiated or tiered?

Use these same questions to review the activities brought to the training.
Could these activities be modified if needed to provide repeated practice and
differentiation?

Read Handout Math Work Stations vs Math Centers by Debbie Diller share
within the pairs or groups of 3, key differences between stations and centers.
Use Smart Notebook or Google Doc for recording group responses.
Use Handout - CCRSM Unit 1 CEPA #2 look at how the information obtained
in this assessment could help with differentiating station activities.
Break: 10 minutes
Section 3: Math Station Planning for September 35 minutes
Using both College and Career Ready Standards for Math (CCRSM) Unit 1
Framework and the Kindergarten Math Stations for CCRSM by Rebecca
Sterrett, plan the math stations for September. Laptops available for
exploring links to various games and websites listed in the Unit 1 Framework
and the Math Stations handout. Discussion should also focus on method of
introducing stations and setting expectations.
Section 4: PLC Planning for September 10 minutes
What is the focus? (chapter from Math Work Stations book, Math Station
framework handout, Additional Resources, etc.)
When will PLC meet? Weekly collaboration block, daily specials block, etc.
What tool will be used for sharing whats working/whats not? (Google Docs,
OneNote, etc)
