Classroom Management

My goal is to instill a positive learning environment by using positive reinforcement and

responsive classroom approaches.
Responsive Classroom
Morning Meeting
o Gathering as a whole class each morning to greet one another, share news, and
warm up for the day ahead.
o Students learn social skills and it is a time for belonging, and fun. This builds
classroom community.
Greeting greeting each other by name
Sharing sharing news of interest
Group Activity building class cohesion through active participation
Morning Message practicing academic skills and building community
through reading and discussing a daily message written by the teacher.
(Might make Mondays a science theme, Tuesdays language arts, etc.,
could be about event sin the world, class riddles, vocabulary words). Read,
discuss it, and reflect on student responses.
Rule Creation
o Make rules as a class that allows all class members to meet their learning goals.
As a class we will see that all rules can fall under 3 main rules: Take care/Respect
of yourself, take care of others, take care or your school). Students will feel
ownership of those rules and we will become a classroom team.
Positive Teacher Language
o Using words and tone to promote childrens active learning and self-discipline (I
noticed I see I heard Many of you)
Logical Consequences
o Responding to misbehavior in a way that allows children to fix and learn from
their mistakes.
Example: The whole class is loud or disruptive in hallway, and then you
will have to go back to the classroom and begin the walk again. Practice
walking quietly instead of having free choice time.
o Behavior Reflection Sheet students check off or explain how they were feeling,
what happened, and what they will do differently next time.
Interactive Modeling
o Model procedures for students and then have them practice procedures. (Entering
the classroom, lining up, hall procedures, sharpening pencils, etc.)
Academic Choice
o Increases student motivation by differentiating instruction by interest. (Choice
boards)
Classroom Organization
o Setting up the physical room in ways that encourage independence, cooperation
and productivity. (Desks set up to encourage collaboration, but have option of

desk barriers for independence. Make aisles safe, and provide organized
designated areas throughout classroom for reading, writing, etc.)
Working with Families
o Hearing families insights and helping them understand the schools teaching
approaches. (Weekly Newsletters, Family interest inventory, conferencing, and
family engagement plan).
Hopes and Dreams
o Hopes and Dreams Conference at the beginning of the school year
Send home letter first to have parents think about their hopes and reams
for their child (encourage an academic and a social goal)
Talk about goals at conference and record parents goals.
o Have students create their own goal at the beginning of the school year. Post their
goals in the classroom. Refer to hopes and dreams throughout school year. If they
are misbehaving, ask student, Is this action helping you achieve your goal? Can
change goal during the year, if needed.
