LESSON PLAN OUTLINE

JMU Elementary Education Program

Kelsey Mercadante
Mrs. Patterson, T.C. Miller Elementary School, 5th Grade
Date: Mon. Nov. 16th Time: 2:05-3:20

A. TITLE OF LESSON: Solving Erosion Problems

B. CONTEXT OF LESSON
During this lesson, students will review erosion, deposition and weathering. Students will see
pictures of each and ways to solve the problems. In groups, students will work together to
solve an erosion problem.
C. UNWRAPPING THE VIRGINIA STANDARDS OF LEARNING
1. Grade Level and Content Area:
Fifth Grade Science
2. Standard and Indicators:
Science: SOL 5.7 - The student will investigate and understand how Earths
surface is constantly changing. Key concepts include:
o f) weathering, erosion, and deposition
Blooms Taxonomy
Levels:
Analysis
D. LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Understand
U1: Earths geological features
have changed over time due to
certain processes such as
weathering, erosion and
deposition.

Know
K1: Weathering the breaking
down or disintegration of
substances such as rocks and
minerals by physical, chemical,
or biological processes.

K2: Erosion the movement of

sediment or soil from one
location to another by means of
water, ice, or wind.

K3: Deposition when particles

carried by water, ice, or winds
are dropped in another location.

Do
D1: Create a plan to solve
erosion problems that may be
found

E. ASSESSING LEARNING
I will assess students by observation and participation. Students will work together in groups
to create a plan to solve an erosion problem. At the end of class, students will complete an
exit ticket if time.
F. MATERIALS NEEDED

Smart Board
4-square sheet
Pencils
Prezi
Bulletin Board Paper
Coloring utensils
Pictures of Erosion to hand out to each group (4)
Exit Ticket Sheet

G. PROCEDURE
Prep:

Prepare and collect all materials. Get bulletin paper and pictures of erosion for each
group.

Engage:
Activator: Show students prezi
Discuss the prezi:
o What are examples of erosion? Discuss/show examples.
o How can we solve erosion problems? Discuss/show examples
o What are examples of deposition? Discuss/show examples
o Show how the deposition example be solved
o *If time show examples of weathering
Implementation:
Tell students they will work in their table groups for the activity. Each table group will be
given a picture and a piece of bulletin board paper. As a group, explain what is going on
in your picture. Then, solve the problem in your picture as a group by creating a drawing
and providing a statement that explains how you are going to solve the problem.
Directions will be provided on board/prezi.
Tell students they will have a certain amount of time to work on the activity (10-12)
minutes and set a timer on smart board. http://www.online-stopwatch.com/rocket-timer/
As students engage in their activity, circulate to each group and observe students as they
work. Ask questions as you go to each group, and make sure students are on task.
Have students turn in completed group bulletin board paper

Early finishers: highlight key words in their sort that go with each category (weathering,
erosion or deposition) in their science notebook.

Closure:
If time, have students complete exit ticket: Weathering, Erosion and Deposition

***Remind students that they have a quiz tomorrow on rocks! Tell them to study
notes!
