the numerous qualities that make a good friend/friendship.

LESSON
Introduction
I would start off by brainstorming vocabulary and ideas about what a
10-12 friend is. After which we would have a discussion as to why friends are
mins important. Students can have the chance to share stories and personal
experiences with the class. I would then create a brainstorming web with
vocabulary words. For example the word friendship in the middle of the
board would branch out to: friends are, friendship feels like, friendship
looks like, friendship sounds like, etc. I would write all of the students
ideas on this web, which would be on a big bristol board.

Development: I will begin to read the book to the children.

I would read the story Treasure by Suzanne Bloom. While reading the story
I would ask students questions such as Did any of you ever go on an
adventure with your friends? or Are friends more important than
treasure? in order to get them to think about all the qualities that make a
good friend. If there is new vocabulary or ideas about what makes a good
friend that come up from reading this book and having a discussion, we
would add these to our friendship web/board. At the end of the book, I
would ask the students if they enjoyed the story as well as the images in
the book.

mins To end this activity, I would cover the Bristol board (so the children do not
see) and ask students to come up with words that relate to the word
friendship. If children are having a hard time remembering what they said
previously, I would remind them by giving them hints from the web board.

Evaluation:
-Did the children participate when I asked them question regarding the book?
-Were the children paying attention to the story? Were they interested?
-Did the children remember synonyms of the word friendship?
-Do they understand why friendship is important in life?

Whats next? (Development/Extensions)

A. I would use this story to teach children about the importance of friendship
and imagination. I would then ask the children to draw a picture of a friend
that has had a positive impact on their life because this will get the students
thinking of good friendships. After drawing, the students will have to describe
their friend to the class and why he or she is a good friend.
COMPETENCY 4 TO COMMUNICATE USING THE RESOURCES OF LANGUAGE
-Students will be able to discuss everyday friendship situations with their
classmates. They will also have the chance to communicate and listen to one
another.
B. Using technology, students can make a collage of their friends by copy
pasting pictures unto a computer program that permits students to put a
bunch of pictures together. This activity will allow students to remember fun
times they had with their friends and why friendship is important.

C. In small groups, children will create posters for the classroom on what they
think the definition of friendship is. This will create a positive ambience in the
classroom and will also remind students to respect one another. By doing
these poster, children can be creative and decorate the poster anyway they
want.
COMPETENCY 5 TO CONSTRUCT HIS/HER UNDERSTANDING OF THE WORLD
-While creating the poster, children will be able to manipulate materials,
share information with peers and discuss thoughts on friendship with
classmates.
