ThecausewewanttoaddressisthelackofwomenintheSTEMfield.
Thereisaneedin
theDFWduetothefactthatitisamajorcityinbothTexasandtheUnitedStates.DMagazine
evenreferstotheDFWmetroplexassecondonlytoCalifornia'sSiliconValley.Many
popularS.T.E.Mbasedcompaniesarelocatedhereincluding,butnotlimitedto,Texas
Instruments,AT&T,andbranchesofMicrosoft,MetroPCSandVerizonWireless.Iftheissue
remainsunsolved,wewillcontinuetolosemanyofournexttopengineers,scientistsand
mathematiciansduetothenegativeconnotationthatcomeswithbeingageekoranerdygirlin
middlehighschool.
Asagroup,wehavedecidedthatwewanttodoadayactivityfrom8:30amto2:00pm
thatbringsmiddleschoolchildrenallthewayuptowomeninjuniorcollegestogetherforaday
ofspeakers,workshopsandoverallencouragementtojoinS.T.E.Mmajorsandcareers.Ontop
ofthat,wewillalsohavespeakersandworkshopsformenandwomenwhoneedhelporadvice
ondiversifyingtheirworkplacesandincludingandappealingtowomen.Wecanmeasurethe
successbyaskinglocalcollegesfortheirregisterstats.Howmanymorestudentsregistered?

WellalsostudythegenderofapplicantsforTexasInstruments.
OurcompanynameisHighTechHighHeelsandournonprofitpartnerwiththisallday
activityisWITI,WomeninTechnologicalInternational.
TheconnectionisthatTIisan
engineerbasedcompanythatcandefinitelyusethemindsofwomenthatcanhelpbuildfuture
technologythatcanimprovethelifestyleofmanypeopleinoursociety.UsingTIasaour

organizationwecandefinitelypersuadewomenduringtheprogramtoapplyandtowork
towardsindustrythattheyfeeltheyhadnochancein.Thenonforprofitaswellcontainsa
strongpushforwomentoworkintechnology.
Thecompanyisdoingthistohelpstudentswithfoggybrainsbecomemoreclear,evenif
itsnotsomethingtheywanttodo.Wewillgetbrandawarenessbecausewewillpromoteour
company.Themarketingwillbeinthepaperworkandbrochureswegivethem.Wereallywant
tohelpsemiinterestedstudentsfeelgoodabouttheirdecisionwhethertopursuetheSTEMfield
ornot.WomenwhoarewantingtoentertheSTEMfieldaredefinitelygoingtobenefitfromthis
event.
WeareaskingtheChamberofCommercefor$15,000andwebelievetheyshouldgive
usthemoneybecauseweareseekingtohelptheDallascommunityandhelpthesegirlsgofor
theirdreams.

Background&Problem
Womenallacrosstheworldarefacingdiscriminationandmisogynyintheworkforceand
intheirpersonallives.Astechnologyadvancesandourworldbeginstogrowwithnew
innovationsbreakingthrougheveryday,ourSTEMjobshoweverarelackingintheirdiversityof
womenintheirprogramsandcareers.OurorganizationHighTechHighHeelspromotesthe
increaseinparticipationofwomeninSTEMfields.BeingapartoftheDFWarea,theprevalent
issueisntcenteredaroundthisareaalone,butacrossthenation.However,withthehelpofthis
metroplexwideevent,WomeninPower,wehopetoaddresssomeoftheissuesthatyoung
womenfaceintheworkforce.Fightingtobreakdownthebarriersindiscriminationinthework
forceinDFWwillhelpfosterinnovationwhichleadstohighersuccessratesincompanyanda
betteroutlookofsuchahighlyaccreditedcity.
Theproblembehindsuchlowparticipationratesamongwomenseemstobethefactthat
sinceSTEMfieldsarehighlymaledominatedwomenarelesscompelledinapplyingtoajob.
Womenarelesslikelytoapplytoamaledominatedjobbecausetheyfeeldiscriminated
against.

SocietyhasdeemedaSTEMjobasamoremasculinejobandwomenshouldstickto
theirmorematernallyinclinedjobssimilarlytohealthcareprofessionsand
administration.
YoungwomenunderstandandknowthisstigmaaroundSTEMjobsandcontinuetoenter
intocareerstheyknowtheycanadvanceandclimbin.
AccordingtotheNGCProjectstatistics,13%ofwomenmakeuptheengineeringoccupation
while47%ofwomenmakeupthetotalU.Sworkforce.
Thesenumbersarestaggeringlowduetothesocialconceptthatwomenshouldleavethe
difficultoccupationsuptothemen.PartneringwithWITIforthisevent,wehopetomotivate
andeducateeveryoneintheDFWareaonhowweneedtodiversifyourcompaniesand
organizations.

Proposal
HighTechHighHeelsishostinganeventcalledWomeninPower.Thiseventwillbe
centeredaroundbreakingthestereotypesofwomenandfocusingonhowwecanimprovethe
surroundingDFWbyincreasingthenumberofwomenenteringandapplyingtoSTEMfields.
WomeninPowerisnotsolelyforwomen,butforeveryonewhowantstoparticipateinacause
thatwehaveignoredforquitesometimenow.Ourprojectwillcontainspeakersfromexecutive
positionsdiscussingtheirfightagainstsuchamaledominatedindustry.Wehopetobringinsight
onyounggirlsthattheyarefullycapableofprogressinginSTEMjobs.Sessionswillalsobe
providedfordifferentagegroupsasthesewillfocusonmoretheirschooling,jobskills,and
networkingbase.
TheinequalityofwomeninAmericahasbeenoverlookedbysocietyoverthelast
decade.Womenarepaidlowerthanmeneveniftheyareofthesamepositionintheircompany.
Ourproposaltoeducateandmotivateyounggirlstoforgetaboutwhatsocietydeemsastheirrole
isextremelyimportantasitisshapingbrilliantmindstohelpimproveourworld.Limitingyoung
girlsintoeventhinkingaboutstudyingengineeringorphysicscouldleadtoahugebreakthrough
lossedbecauseofsocietalstereotypes.Thatiswhyweareplacingsuchahugeemphasison
STEMfieldsbecausethefuturelieswithintheseyoungpupils.
WeplantoinfluencemiddleschoolgirlsinhopesofthemapplyingtoAPclassesinhigh
school.ThisincreasestheirchancesinenteringinaSTEMfieldduringtheirtimeatauniversity
orcollege.Aspartofourprogram,sessionswillbeprovidedtohelpwithresumebuildingand
careeradvice.StartingfrommiddleschoolersintheDFWarea,ourplanistocreatea
longlastingrelationshipswiththeseschoolstohelpbeginanewmovementasthesegirlsare

growing.Showingthemthatnothingisintheirwayofreachingtheirdreams,younggirlsare
moldedintoyoungworkingwomenwhocanacceleratethesuccessofSTEMjobshereinDallas.
ThisisbeneficialforDallasasitrevealstoothercitiesinthenationthatwestandoutandveer
awayfromthestereotypes.Womeneverywherewillfeelmorecompelledtoapplytojobsin
Dallas,contributingtoourrisingsuccessandranks.Whylimitbrightmindswhenwecanhone
inonindividualswithapassionforSTEMcareers?ThiswillbringDallasintoanewlightand
hopefullysparkatrailblazerfortherestofAmerica.

TheWomeninPowereventwillbeheldatKlydeWarrenParkintheheartofdowntown
Dallas.Everyday,newopportunitiesariseintheDFWarea,andlatelyaroundDallasin
particular.ThisincludesmajorrelocationssuchastheToyotaheadquartersandtheKubota
TractorCorpfromCalifornia.Asidefromthesenewrelocations,Dallashasalsobeentheheart
ofmanythrivingS.T.E.Mbasedcompanies.Thisiswhywechosealocationrightintheheartof
opportunity.
Theprogramwillbeginwithacheckinperiodfrom8:30to9:00AM.Thisiswhere
participantswillgetcolorcodednametagsinordertodifferentiatetheagegroups.Ourgroups
willconsistofmiddlehighschoolgirls,collegewomen,andmenandwomenthatarecurrently
intheworkforce.Differentactivitiesarepreparedforeachgroupinordertocatertotheir

beforetheysplitupintotheirbreakoutsessions.Thewomangivingthespeechwillbeawoman
ofhighstatusineithertheengineeringorcomputersciencefieldhereatTexasInstruments.Once
shehasgivenherspeech,thegroupswillbreakupintotheirsessions.Formiddletohighschool
girls,westartoutwiththeDefeattheStigma!seminarwherethegirlswilllearnaboutmany
powerfulwomenintheS.T.E.Mfield,theirsuccessesandhowtodefeatthestereotypeofmath
andsciencebeingnerdyanduncool.Wewanttoshowtheyounggirlsthattheyshouldntbe
discouragedtopursueacareer,evenifitsnotthenorm.Afterthis,theywillattendthe
WhichClassesShouldITakeseminarwheretheywilllearnaboutwhatclasseswillprepare
themintheirfutureasaS.T.E.Mmajor.Thisincludesteachingthemthedifferencebetween

AdvancedPlacement(AP)versusregularcoursesintheirschools,aswellashowtopreparefor
APExamsandhowtheywillbenefityou.Oncetheyhavefinished,theywillmoveontothe
SummerCampsession.Herethegirlswillworkonsamplesofhandsonprojectsthatareapart
ofscienceandITcampsaroundtheDFWarea.Thishandsonprojectsincludeavarietyof
activitiesfromscienceexperimentstotutorialsonprogrammingandcoding.
Forthecollegewomenwewillstartoutwithaninternshipsession.Tableswillbesetup
withvariouscompaniesofferinginternshipsandinformationonupcomingprogramsthatthey
offer.TexasInstrumentswillhaveaboothaswellasotherS.T.E.McompaniesintheDFW
metroplex.Thewomenareencouragedtobringresumesanddressprofessionally.Thenext
sessioncontainsajobfair.Thissessionisprimarilyforthejuniorsandseniorsinattendance
lookingforafulltimejobaftergraduation.However,anyoneiseligibletoapplyandnetwork.
Thelastsessionwillbecomposedofaresumebuildingworkshop.Oftentimes,theresumesof
S.T.E.Mmajorscanbeverydetailedintermsorcertificationsandprogramproficiencies.This
workshopwillteachthestudentshowtoputtogetheraresumeinthemostefficientwayfortheir
major.
Althoughthiseventisprimarilycateredtowomen,thelastagegroupconsistsofmenand
womenwhoarealreadypartoftheworkforce.Heretheywillbegintheirsessionsinaseminar
createdtoinformthemaboutreasonswhytheworkplaceshouldbediversifiedandhowit
benefitsyourcompanyintodaysworld.Then,theywillattendatrainingsessionwheretheywill
learnaboutthedifferenttechniquestheycantryinordertocreateadiverseandwelcomingwork
atmosphere.Lastly,themenandwomenwillthenpartakeinteambuildingactivitiesthatthey

cantakewiththemanduseattheirplaceofwork.Inordertocreateanefficient,diverse
workplaceyouneedyouremployeestobeabletoworktogether.
Afterthebreakoutsessionsarecomplete,therewillbeanhourbetween12PMwherethe
participantscanleavetheiragegroupsandnetworkwitheachother.Forexample,themiddleto
highschoolgirlsandtalktothecollegewomenaboutwhatuniversityislike,theirmajorsand
anyadvice.Thecollegewomenandthemenandwomenwhoarealreadyintheworkforcecan
networkandfindprospectivejobs,internships,orotheropportunities.Wewantthisprogramto
breakthebarrierforwomeninthesefieldsandreallyprovidethemwiththeopportunityand
motivationtogrow.

Withsuchalargescaleevent,therewillbevariouswaysHighTechHighHeelscanmeasurethe
successoftheevent.Thiseventwillrequireparticipantstofillouttheircontactinformationfor
statisticalvalueandusage.
Middle/HighSchoolAgeGroup:
CheckingsurroundinghighschoolstoseeparticipationinAPclassesthataremathand
sciencebasedformiddleschoolers.
Examiningmajorsforgraduatinghighschoolwomentocheckforaninclinationto
STEMfields.
AnalyzingSummerScienceandITcampsparticipationnumberswillalsobenotedinto
thesuccessmeasuresasthesespearheadyounggirlsintopartakingSTEMclassesinthe
future.
CollegeAgeGroup:
Internshipsaroundtheareawillbesurveyedtoseeiftherehasbeenanincreaseof
womenintheemployment.
GraduatestudentswillbeinterviewedtoseeiftheyareinterestedinapplyingtoaSTEM
graduateprogram.
CourseswillbeanalyzedtoseeiftherehavebeenanincreaseinwomenforDFW
collegesanduniversities.

ResearchingSTEMjobsfromDFWareaswillbeamainpriorityforthisagegroupto
makesurethattherehasbeenanincreaseinwomenintheiremployment.
Interviewingjobemployersandemployeesforfeedbackontheeventwillhelpsortout
anyproblemsandgivemoreinformationonsuccessmeasureforthisagegroup.
Onthemicrolevel,theDFWareawillbethoroughlydissectedasthisisthepriorityofour
success.Dataanalysisonperformancesofemployerswillenhanceourunderstandingofthe
successoftheevent.
Onthemacrolevel,wecangaugeoursuccessoftheprojectbylookingatcitieswiththesame
companiesasDallasandtheirwomenemploymentrates.Withthis,wecangainbetterinsighton
howeffectivetheprojectwasonthediversificationofSTEMjobscomparedtoothercities.This
isagoodwayforDallastoseparateitselffromcitiesandrisetothetopoftheranks.

Conclusion
Everydayyoungwomendecidenottofollowtheirdreamsbecausetheyarediscouraged.
Thecareertheywantmaynotbethenormforwomenormaybethey'veneverpersonallymeta
womaninthatfield.Thisiswhereoureventcomesin.Wewanttomotivatethesegirlsand
youngwomenandallowthemtogainconfidenceintheirfieldofinterest.Wewantthemtolearn
andnetworkwithnotonlyothersofthesameinterest,butpossibleemployersandmentors.
Therearemultipleprogramsandorganizationsouttheretoraiseconfidenceinwomenpursuinga
careerintheSTEMfield.However,whatreallysetsusapartfromotherorganizationswenot
onlytargeteducation,butwebringincompaniestoshowthewomenwhatkindofmarketthey
aregoingtobeenteringin.
Withthisprojectwehopetoaccomplishalargerbreakthroughinthediversificationof
Dallas.Diversificationfostersinnovationincompaniesandallowsthemtothrive.Wewantto
breakdownbarriersandgiveeveryonetheequalchancethattheydeserve.Whywouldwantto
limitbrilliantmindsinmakingadifferenceintheworld?Theyounggirlsattendingourevents
couldbenextCEOsofIBMorGoogle.Withthepropermotivationandeducation,thelimitsare
endless.
