Project 2: SLOS that I used in this Research Paper

SLO A: analyze, compose, and reflect on arguments in a variety of genres, considering

the strategies, claims, evidence, and various mediums and technologies that are appropriate to the
rhetorical situation (Ketcham)
If you will notice in my report I did not use fancy words at all and gave a lot of pictures
and even one you tube video alongside my writing. I did this because I was composing a blog on
the internet and I knew that the blog genre demanded a more colorful atmosphere than say a
graduate thesis on philosophy. However, even though I did not use complicated words, I was
very thorough in my citation process and the sources I chose to include in my paper. Even
though it was a blog, I still wanted my paper to look professional and clean cut, a appearence
which I think I achieved.
SLO B: describe the social nature of composing, particularly the role of discourse
communities at the local, national, and international level (Ketcham)
When writing a blog post, one needs to be aware that he is communicating with the entire
world. Once that blog post is online, people are going to see it and read it which is something
the author needs to expect. One of the topics in my paper was about the life of a banana
plantation worker and I know that there are many people who care about buying ethically
produced foods. My report might change how they view bananas and maybe prompt them to not
buy name brand bananas (Dole and other brands like that).
SLO C: use multiple approaches for planning, researching, prewriting, composing,
assessing, revising, editing, proofreading, collaborating, and incorporating feedback in order to

make your compositions stronger in various mediums and using multiple technologies
(Ketcham)
I have a process when it comes to doing research papers that I always follow when it
comes to prewriting and researching. The first thing that I do is to pull out a stack of 3X5 cards
and some highlighters. Once I have my research topics I divide the cards up into color coded
sections and research writing about two facts per card. Once I have all the information that I
need for the report, I arrange my stacks of cards in the order that I want and begin composing
with the cards as my prompt. This whole card process takes time, but I really feel like it helps
me in the long run.
When it comes to the editing aspect of my paper I really tried to make sure that my paper
was free of grammar and spelling errors. I went to office hours about my paper and spent
copious amounts of time checking that my paper flowed and was free of writing errors.
SLO D: improve your fluency in the dialect of Standardized Written American English
at the level of the sentence, paragraph, and document (Ketcham)
SLO D in project two was hard to accomplish with any kind of success. Because it was a
blog post on the internet, I wanted to keep the fancy words down to a minimum and instead
focus on conveying my thesis statement. I did, however, use strong descriptive words when
trying to explain the horrible lives banana plantation workers live. When describing their life, I
used words like, plight and living wage just to ensure good communication with my
audience about the subject of banana workers.
SLO E: analyze and describe the value of incorporating various languages, dialects and
registers in your own and others texts (Ketcham)

The best example that I can come up with for this SLO was when I included the police
video where they spoke Spanish (apropos to a report on a South American country). I thought
the video really added a lot of ethos to my writing as it gave their perspective on the gang
situation in Honduras. This video along with incorporating the Spanish language into my blog
also served as a great multimodal element in my report.
SLO F: evaluate your development as a writer over the course of the semester and
describe how composing in multiple genres and mediums using various technologies can be
applied in other contexts to advance your goals (Ketcham)
In the engineering world you have to give presentations. For instance, my final project
for my CE design class is to figure out a way in which to save water by offering a plan for some
type of water conservation unit for the UNM Law library porch. In order for that project to go
well I will need to do a couple of things: First off, I will need to incorporate many multimodal
elements into my presentation which could include, site pictures, AutoCAD sketches, and a
colorful power point. I feel like this research paper prepared me to do this because like that final
project I will need to use multimodality professionally or it will not go over well.
SLO G. "use writing and research as a means of discovery, to examine your personal
beliefs in the context of multiple perspectives and to explore focused research questions through
various mediums and technologies" (Ketcham)
SLO G: I did not know hardly anything about Honduras when I started this project and so
I had to learn everything that I put in my research paper. However, I feel that the many sources I
cited covered a broad spectrum of topics and really showed that I knew what I was talking about
and took the time to look up reliable sources. I believe incorporating these sources into my

writing gave me a wider world view to look at immigration with. The one thing that I could have
improved on SLO G was finding a data base article as a source. Data bases are really the
scholarly source for college students and add a certain element of ethos to the writing.
SLO H: integrate others positions and perspectives into your writing ethically,
appropriately, and effectively in various mediums and technologies (Ketcham)
SLO H: I think I really captured SLO H when I mentioned the banana farmers and Coffee
vs. Gangs. These two things broadened my view of Honduras and the banana industry. I think I
did use these materials appropriately because every time I quoted them it was always followed
by an in text citation with the appropriate citation in my works cited at the end. When it came to
using various mediums and technologies for those perspectives, I was careful to include both
written quotes and you tube videos. I especially like the police you tube video because it shows
an angle that is not often seen in U.S media today.
SLO I: compose a research-based academic argument in one of various mediums and
technologies by identifying, analyzing, evaluating, and synthesizing sources, which must include
secondary sources. (Ketcham)
SLO I: SLO I was a little bit difficult in this paper. The one example that immediately
comes to mind is when I argued that coffee was better than bananas as an exported product. I
feel like I analyzed the process well for both plants and gave a truthful evaluation of my analysis.
My analysis was that coffee is better than bananas not only as an exported product, but for the
farmer as well. The only thing I do not think I did well on was covering the secondary source as
I do not think I had much of any secondary source. The only example that I can think of that I

quoted in my paper was from the coffee and tea company where they described the growing and
harvesting process of coffee.
SLO J: analyze and describe the writing and research conventions of an academic field
in order to understand the different ways of creating and communicating knowledge (Ketcham)
SLO J: SLO J was a little bit confusing to me and I do not feel as though it was required
in this research paper. The only thing that I can say about it is that I tried to model the scientific
and engineering way of researching in my report by quantifying my evidence in number form.
SLO K: develop agency in the classroom to assert your own position/stance on a subject with
careful argument and evidence. (Ketcham)
SLO K: I covered this SLO when I went to office hours with Professor Ketcham. When I
went in, the first thing I did was to describe my thesis and why I thought it would work. After
that, we went over my paper and I explained how I thought the sources I chose would either help
me out or hinder my writing process. I also think I did this SLO by making a strong thesis
statement in my research paper that unstable economies are one of the biggest reasons for
immigration. I then defended that thesis throughout my paper using credible sources and good
argumentative strategies. One of the best examples of this is when I used pathos in my
description of the banana workers by using words like lowballing and living wage to try and
get people sympathetic to their plight.
SLO L: evaluate the quality of a texts content through a variety of means, but with a
strong emphasis on Rhetorical Analysis. (Ketcham)
SLO L: The best example that I can think of for this SLO was the peer reviews I did.
When I was peer reviewing my classmates work, I took careful notice of how their paper was

constructed, how it flowed, and whether their thesis statement was clearly defined throughout the
paper.
