Lesson Observations

Period 4 - Tuesday, 23rd/2/16

Year 12 Psychology (Class no.2)
Teacher: Emma Holman

Begins lesson with marking the roll (quickly)

Teacher begins a reflection task on students SAC they recently completed.
The teacher asks students to use a scrap piece of paper, put their names
at the top. The teacher asks students to complete the following questions:
- What did you do in your preparation for the SAC?
- How well do you think you went?
- Any other comments?

The teacher guides students verbally through the reflection task, helping
students to break it down and gives examples
After the reflection task, the teacher asks students to open their textbooks
to a specific page; the teacher provides an explanation on the new topic
they are about to begin. The teacher reads parts of the textbook, and
doesnt stop for student chatter but instead instructs students to highlight
keynotes in the text as the teacher reads.
The teacher provides a physical demonstration of the hemispheres of the
brain, using her hands. While giving the physical demonstration, the
teacher explains how the brain is communicating.
After the physical demonstration, students are asked to record key terms
by transferring them into their glossaries in their workbooks. While
students are recording key terms into their workbooks, the teacher walks
around the class collecting student reflections.
The teacher continues to check where students are at, and is able to give
students who are finishing early the next activity to move onto.
The teacher brings up a PowerPoint presentation onto the projector, The
slides focus specifically on each lobe of the brain, students are able to
transfer additional notes, the teacher discusses key points, there are visual
cues added to the slides and short videos that demonstrate specific lobe
functions.
In the last 10 minutes of the lesson the teacher asks students to open their
diaries to record what homework they need to complete and when it is
due. Students are asked to complete a specific part of their booklets
(created by the teacher at the beginning of the year), the activity asks
students to label the lobes of the brain (plus additional questions).
Teacher sums up the class lesson on time, allowing 5 minutes for pack up,
additional questions regarding the SAC and times to ensure classroom is
tidy.

Personal reflection on the overall lesson: The teacher uses a variety of tools
during each lesson, she is highly organised and the lesson seems to flow very well
always ended in a timely pack up. The teacher is extremely knowledgeable, has a
strong rapport with students and is able to engage the class throughout the 75minute period (which can be an awfully long time). I think the fact that the
teacher uses a variety of methods throughout the lesson is highly effective in
engaging the class.
